Incredible Vegan Japanese Food - Edit
This was the first time I had been to a vegan Japanese restaurant and it was SO delicious. I got the bento set and the onigiri had such a lovely and unique flavor. The potato salad was on point. The corokke were delicious and so was the fritter. Also had some incredible local beers. Can’t wait to return here!!

Fresh Healthy Japanese Cuisine - Edit
This easy to miss gem surrounded by empty and industrial store fronts, is calm and pleasant inside with lots of wood. It serves healthy vegan versions of country style Japanese dishes. There are many dishes vegans rarely see available to them like Okonomiaki and onigiri (which are made with sweet brown rice and available in some inventive versions). It is well worth a visit.

Cup Ramen is better... - Edit
I knew this place wasn't going to be authentic going in... Which is fine if the food is decent. But oh boy. I did not even wanna finish my curry udon... tastes identical to the curry Cup Noodle I used to eat before going veg. And those are like 98 cents. Don't get me started on the onigiri... it made me shudder. Too much tofu misozuke. Tasted like mayo which is something I'm not a fan of. Also half of the menu was out of stock. ONE STAR. Happy Cow won't let me rate it one star...

Pros: 100% Vegan
Cons: Homeless people sleeping outside , Taste not great, Pricey

We make our own curry powder from scratch using 17 all organic herbs & spices. Your comparison to Cup a Noodle is a huge compliment, as we have spent countless hours trying to make it taste like something junk food (thanks for not saying it tastes healthy!). Also, there's not a speck of mayo in our onigiri. That's tofu misozuke. Tofu that has been fermented in miso for at least a month. But thanks for your input.

I was really angry that night because someone hit my car while it was parked outside the restaurant so that probably contributed to the angry review. But I still was not a fan😒 sorry. I prefer healthy tasting food I suppose.

Thanks for clarifying on what was in the rice ball. It tasted like mayo had no idea.

Fair enough! …& sorry to hear about your car, that’s terrible. We do wish we opened the Shokudo on a cuter street, in a better neighborhood, but the space inside was well worth it to us.

Vegan Okonomiyaki! - Edit
The ginger pistachio miso onigri was great, so was the soup. We really liked the okonomiyaki, the texture of the outer layer was so egg-like and delicious.

Had a wonderful experience eating here! Not much to say other than the food was tasty😄and I would definitely come again.
Read moreI had the curry katsu (tofu) and some onigiri, the garlic, Buddha’s hand, and the hazelnut. Also tried the dessert flutes which were a wonderful post lunch drink.
The ume (peach) beverage was also yum.
The atmosphere was nice, the servers were pleasant and the food was quick, definitely recommend

Really enjoyed the food here. Nice little restaurant and was able to space out inside as there is no outside dining. We got lucky with parking out front but could imagine might be tricky to get parked. Friendly staff. Had katsu curry and tater tots. Fiancée had bento. Lovely flavours

Unbelievably delicious and nutritious!!! - Edit
Aaaamaaazing!! Omg!! Maybe our favorite PDX spot so far! If only I could learn how they do the magic they do. We had 2 combos, potato salad, the soup added to the combo, fried tofu dish extra sauces. Names I wish I could remember. It was hearty, healthy and perfect for our family of 4. We left feeling like we nurtured our bodies as well as our creative culinary inclinations.

Don’t be a dummy like me and wait for months to try this place. It was a titillating culinary experience and I’ve been dreaming of the tofu katsu every day since. Beautiful Minimalist dining area and an explosion of authentic Japanese flavor in these dishes.

Pretty Good! - Edit
I was ridiculously excited for my food and was not disappointed by the okonomiyaki. I was a little disappointed with the onigiri but truly think that was more about me than the actual food. I would definitely try more from this place.

Ordered the ginger miso stew and added the handmade udon noodles, the curry kabocha croquette, the cabbage pancake aka okinomiyaki, and last but not least the Japanese potato salad. All were excellent, super savory, fantastic textures, perfectly balanced flavors! It really hit the spot. You can tell that these folks know what they are doing! Will be back again and again!

Ridiculously amazing - Edit
Stopped in on a whim on a quick trip from Seattle and had the best Japanese food of my life. Got a combo plate. The mashed potato tots, korokke, and soup were blowing my tiny little mind. We came in during some serious pandemic times and they were the ONLY spot open in the indoor food court (plus not tables inside or out to eat at). Don’t let that fool you. This place is absolutely unbelievable. Don’t let anything stop you from popping in for one of the best meals you’ve ever had. THANK YOU Obon Shokudo!!

A must stop - Edit
This restaurant is exceptional. The food is fantastic. Even though most people may think of Japanese food as solely sushi, this restaurant of vegan Japanese comfort food is simply phenomenal. The flavors are so unique and yet so comforting and warm. I came here and placed a rather large order and they were very quick and accommodating and getting everything ready in a timely manner. They were respectful of any kind of requests I had to the food (such as omitting veganese). There are a lot of vegan options in Portland but this should be on the top of everyone's list. They've got great hot food, cold food, appetizers, and fun drinks. Nothing feels too heavy, even the fried food, and everything is just bursting with flavor.

Rustic and Authentic Japanese Food - Edit
A precious little eatery in a corner of uniquely urban space. Food is healthy and volumy, but won't feel sluggish afterwards because everything here is vegan. Rustic casualness is in everything, from taste to plating.
Read moreLunch plate. Rice ball comes with a medley of colors, if you notice in the photos, that's because multiple healthy delicious bits are mixed in, making every bite fun and unpredictable - in a good way, of course. Kakiage (deep fried veggies) was dough-heavy for my liking, but this is rustic style so understandable. Curry croquet was creamy, salad dressing had unique nutty note, yet bright.
Okonomiyaki. It's basically a cabbage pancake with savory sauce... layers and layers of sauce. Of course it's delicious. The pancake was slightly charred at the bottom, perfect, and cabbages were thick cut to give the delightfully crunching sound as I bit into them. This pancake was bigger than my head, but, I ate em all up!
Japanese dish is not easy to vegan-nize because dashi (stock) is made from bonito (fish). When you replace fish-based with mushroom-based, you gotta do something super creative to recreate the target flavor. For that reason, I really appreciate our precious vegan dining experience in Portland.
We don't live in Portland. We came here during our trip and was pleasantly surprised with the unique set-up of the venue. It's like international food court, event space, inside out picnic area in a giant warehouse.
Food - Okonomiyaki and lunch plate were great! Soup was missing key flavor.
COVID care - Dining space is roomy, easy to social distance. Picnic bench is equipped with plastic divider in middle.
Atmosphere - Urban, global, street food.
Service - Friendly staff. Self service. Pay for meal and bas your own table.
Parking - Street only.
Pros: Light flavoring, Unique and many flavor combo of rice ball
Cons: Some may find their food oily

Tasty and authentic Japanese Comfort Food - Edit
I have patronized Obon for a number of years, well before they moved to their current brick and mortar location. That means I followed them around to various pop-up locations as well as special events where they offered their food to the public, even when I had to drive quite a few miles to get there, because I thought it was worth it. As someone who lived in Tokyo while working at the American Embassy for 4 years and who has traveled the length and breadth of the country from Sapporo in Hokkaido to Naha in Okinawa, I'm pretty familiar with Japanese cuisine. Obon Shokudo provides "inaka-poi" dishes, country food that would be familiar to any one in Japan. I recommend virtually every item on their menu but I'm especially fond of the kabocha croquette and the Japanese style curry. The menu is completely vegan so you never need to worry about fish sauce or fish broth in any of the dishes. For authentic Japanese food with very pleasant hosts, Obon Shokudo cannot be beat.
