Great flavors, vibe, and presentation - Edit
I used to visit Obon at pop-ups and events years ago, but this was my first time to their brick-and-mortar on SE Grand. Unsurprisingly, I had a really great experience!
Read moreThe two onigiri I ordered were fresh and featured great, distinct flavors, and the salad and cup of soup I got on the side were fresh and delicious. I also split the okonomiyaki with my friend, which is the ultimate comfort food as far as I’m concerned.
The restaurant is cozy, the staff was very friendly and helpful, and the food was fast and delicious. I’ll definitely be back soon!
Pros: Delicious, varied flavors, Great service , Cozy, warm environment

Can’t Get Enough Obon Shokudo! - Edit
I love coming to Obon Shokudo! Delicious and comforting 100% vegan Japanese food. It’s hard to pick a favorite dish as I tend to get something different every time, but I always make sure I get an order of onigiri no matter what!

100 percent all vegan Japanese comfort food - Edit
I recently went to Obon Shokudo. The owners are the chefs in the kitchen making Japanese comfort food. Almost everything here is made from scratch. They try to source their produce locally and organic as much as possible which is wonderful.
Read moreAwesome it is 100 percent vegan. I went with the curry udon. A soupy curry with handmade udon noodles, kaiak, fried tofu, veggies, and scallions. I added the three chili kanzuri hot sauce on the side that packed some heat.
It was solid. It was nice and warming as today was a cool rainy day in Portland. The service was solid.
I have been to Japan and always been a fan of Japanese cuisine. I would come back here to explore more of the menu.
Pros: 100 percent all vegan Japanese comfort food

Room for Improvement - Edit
I have had some really good vegan onigiri in the past and unfortunately the ones I tried from here did not taste good. The smoky flavor was over powering and did not pair with the other flavors. As much as I love healthy food, white rice tastes much better in onigiri than brown rice. I ordered the combo plate and my favorite item was probably the giant tater tot followed by the salad. The plate did not feel like a good value for the price.
Read moreWhile I did not enjoy what I ordered, I recognize that the other menu items might be better. With some improvements such as offering onigiri with white rice and increasing the size of the salad, this restaurant could present a better value proposition.

Pros: Salad was tasty

First meal in Portland didn’t disappoint - Edit
It was a rainy day when we landed in Portland and we needed some warm comfort food. Obon hit the spot. My daughter loved her udon and onigiri and I had a combo pictured. Really good food.

Good food, atmosphere and staff - Edit
I ordered the Katsu Curry which featured breaded fried tofu, brown rice, salad, and a curry stew. It was tasty and healthy. The concept of “Japanese comfort food” seemed novel to see in a restaurant description. The waiter dropped off my check a little early, so I started to eat faster as the restaurant was filling up. I am a slow eater (I like to enjoy my food), so this kind of took away from the experience. I don’ think they were necessarily trying to rush me, but I ate faster than normal and didn’t digest the food as well as I normally do. This took away from the experience, but I would still recommend.

Japanese Comfort Food - Edit
This place is very unique! At least I’ve never been to or heard of an all vegan Japanese comfort food restaurant before. I definitely loved it, and I’d definitely go back in a heartbeat. With that said, a couple of the things I tried did not hit the mark…
Read moreThe garlic miso onigiri was so salty I couldn’t take more than a bite. It was a literal salt bomb. Someone told me that all onigiri is like that though, so I don’t know if it was supposed to be like that or not. 🤷♀️ We also tried one of the udons (can’t remember which), and it was ok, but nothing any of us would order again.
What was AMAZING: zucchini tempura, curried korokke, okonomiaki, and the scrumptious kakiage! I highly recommend any of those. The Katsu burger was unusual and delicious. It wasn’t my favorite, but definitely something I’m glad I tried. Lastly, the strawberry mochi was also ok, but I’ve had better mochi unfortunately.
Overall, if you like Japanese food at all definitely give this place a try! The staff is friendly and accommodating. The experience is worth it!
Pros: FRESH handmade food, Friendly staff and nice setting, Highly accommodating of allergen restrictions
Cons: Some dishes over salted

I really loved the food here. My dining companions found it too citrus-heavy and didn’t love that there was no white rice (only brown).

Not quite as good as I hoped - Edit
I really like the idea behind this restaurant, as I've missed eating authentic Japanese food since going vegan. I was excited about Obon Shokudo when I visited Portland, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The portions were quite small given the price, my tofu katsu was a little overcooked/dry, and I could barely discern if there were really any bits of the promised fried tofu in the tan tan sauce that came with the udon noodles my partner ordered.
Read moreNone of the food is bad by any means, but it wasn't sufficiently mind-blowing to justify the price.
Pros: Authentic vegan Japanese food, Nice presentation and atmosphere
Cons: Expensive, Small portions, Food didn't totally impress

Highlight of my Portland trip - Edit
This is so good. Onigiri was amazing. I didn’t know rice balls could be as delicious as that. But honestly everything was delicious. I would just go to Portland for this restaurant alone.

Over hyped - Edit
Some items we had were awesome but nothing really stood out as super unique or special. We started with the kakiage and the tater tots, both of which were really good! We also god the soup which was good, and the tofu katsu. The breading on that was great and it was spongy in the middle, but it was super salty with not a lot of additional flavour. While the apps were good, we were most excited for the onigiri. My friend and I got 4 different onigiri to share, two of which were fried, and honestly couldn’t really tell much of a different in between the flavours. There wasn’t much there in terms of depth and they just tasted like extremely salty balls of rice. They weren’t bad but they weren’t very creative and we were quite disappointed. Other than that, the staff was awesome and created a great atmosphere.

The staff is excellent, and the food is even better. We let the staff order for us, and had the most incredible meal. We ate the scrumptious food so quickly that I hardly got photos!
Read more3 of us shared kakiage (fritters), a market salad, the okayu special (delicious congee), and one onigiri each. I left as full as I was hungry before!

I really like the food here and it feels healthy and tasty, but I definitely think it's pretty expensive, especially for the small portion sizes. Otherwise I would give it five. I love the potato ball things

Absolutely spectacular - Edit
This is probably one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. I love Japanese food and to have a place like this: that's vegan and creatively reinterprets Japanese cuisine with such flair, spectacular flavors, and dare I say, love. It's rare, craveworthy, and you must eat here. Every detail is looked after, every plate an experience.

Friendly Staff - Edit
I wanted a quick snack, so I grabbed a few onigiris and a potato salad. The potato salad was pretty good, and I loved the fresh veggies. The onigiris, unfortunately, were not my favorite. The flavor of the filling was not my favorite. The shop itself was charming, and the person behind the counter was very sweet. I feel bad giving a vegan restaurant three stars, but I was disappointed overall. I would try it again, but it will not be my first choice.

Delicious! - Edit
My first time having Japanese food besides ramen and it was delicious! I ordered the combo, he ordered a few other things. The onigiri was a little too ricey for me but I think it's supposed to be that way. Tasty but too carby for me. The fried veggie mixed things were delicious! The tofu katsu had such a great flavor.
