Peri Nostalgic - Edit
I was going to try to compile this review without referring to the oft-quoted British saying related to this particular chain, but I soon realised the futility in this endeavour when it was all I could think about: who doesn’t love a cheeky Nando’s?!
Read moreOf course, fine dining this is not. Yet in terms of good, honest, solid food that is prepared quickly with almost infallible consistency, you can’t really fault it.
Many a year has passed since I last partook in a meal from any of these franchises' innumerable locations, but as each dish arrived, it was as if I was instantly transported back in time. I had feared that it wouldn’t live up to those rose-tinted memories that I held so dear, that now, with a much broader view of the world and its culinary offerings, this would suffer by comparison. Joyfully—and emphatically—this was not the case.
Still as vibrant and unique as it ever was, the red pepper dip got things off to the best possible start; creamy, peri drizzle-topped hummus and spicy, plump olives didn’t hurt either.
When it came to the main course, I will freely admit that I got a bit giddy with regard to the sides. Perhaps it was a subconscious need to make up for lost time, but I did my level best to get nearly one of everything. While the spicy rice, three-bean salad, and potato fries were more than adequate, the peri wedges and batata harra were superb. So good, in fact that I genuinely contemplated ordering second helpings, but sense prevailed and I managed to restrain myself
Capping everything off nicely was the veg pita. Thanks to the copious amount of hot sauce it was slathered in, the omission of mayonnaise didn’t hinder the moistness nor the overall enjoyment of what was an excellent sandwich.
Yes, there is better food to be had elsewhere, but that’s not the point—it’s somewhere that delivers exactly what it promises with no airs and graces. Having firmly rekindled my love affair with it, I will undoubtedly be back.
