Good restaurant, better desserts! - Edit
This is a good lunch and dinner restaurant with classic Japanese cuisine. They have a great omurice and curry. The menu is a bit limited but what they have is full of flavour. The desserts are amazing with loads of strawberry’s and tiramisu.

Delicious - Edit
I’d been searching for vegan katsu in Kyoto and finally we found it at Mumokuteki! Everything we ordered was so good. All the little fried things were fantastic. We got parfaits for dessert and they were so delicious. Loved everything

I followed the waiter’s suggestion and tried the karaage set menu (fried “chicken” menu). The menu was quite complete, but I preferred if the food was a little bit salty.

Nice but not amazing - Edit
Location, staff and decor were all amazing, as was presentation, but wouldn't rave about the flavours of the set meals - would not return for any savoury food. Didn't try any desserts though, which did look tasty so would return to try.

Mumokuteki kyoto - Edit
This may be my favourite meal I had in Tokyo. Dessert was delicious. The soy milk ice cream is also super low calorie. So go on and treat yourself. it has a busy cafe vibe but very calm. #Veganuary

The vibe was great, the service was lovely, portions were large and they had interesting options! I branched out and order yuba “eggs” and it was wild and delightful! Maybe pricey, but I feel like the amount of food and quality was worth the price!

Out of the ordinary, and very tasty - Edit
I visited this stop while in Kyoto, after seeing all of the rave reviews. Certainly was not disappointed in the konjac-based meat alternatives, which were of a very high quality! It felt good to be trying something different, and my partner and I ordered the 'mumokuteki 3 types of specials set' which had was very varied and large in size.
Read moreIt came with all 3 of the different 'mock meats', each distinctive from one another, a small miso soup, rice, and side salads. Besides the mashed tofu salad we both enjoyed this meal a lot, and even had a soft serve soy ice cream afterwards. While it was on the pricier side, we did order the most expensive plate (go figure), and we were both full afterwards.
Highly recommend visiting if you are looking for food in Kyoto!
Pros: Lots of great options, Mock meat was different from most places, Felt fresh and high in quality
Cons: A little pricy

Hands down favourite bowl of ramen - Edit
We got the sesame miso soy ramen and the sichuan style tan-tan noodle. My best friend and I both agreed this was our top restaurant during our trip. Would’ve gone back if we spent the night in Kyoto.

super tasty! - Edit
I've eaten here before I turned vegan, about 3 years ago and I really liked it but found it really weird because I we all new to the whole vegetarian substitutes and such. This time I knew a lot more and both me and my partner really enjoyed our food. I took a dish that said it had fish stock in it and asked if I could get it without and the waiter said they made a version without it for people who wanted and that I would get a buillion soup instead of miso. So even if it says it contains fish, ask if they can make it without!

Good food, closes early - Edit
Now entirely vegan restaurant in central Kyoto.
Read moreAbout the food:
Good food. Been there several times and had a tasty tofu-burger don (see picture) for 950 yen (L-size). Doria was very good, made with soy milk and coconut flakes to add some crustiness. Ramen is okay but doesn’t have a strong flavour - mostly tasted like coconut milk really - and sadly uses spaghetti instead of ramen noodles. Tofu cheese cake tasted really good but looked brown instead of white.
Other:
There is an English menu.
I like the interior. Very cosy, but with lots of space. The cutest place is meant for families and if you don't bring kids you're not allowed in, not even if the rest of the restaurant is full. It's often full at noon so go early or be prepared to wait for 30 minutes .

Every item was delicious - Edit
My husband and I each ordered from the set menu. I had the katsu set, and he had the special for only a few hundred yen more. For that he got to try the katsu, hamburger and karaage. Sets came with miso, gyoza, rice, and two sides of pickles. Each item was delicious. Deserts were good, but couldn't compete with the mains. Coffee was also good. It was easy to book a table using the computer system downstairs, and staff were friendly.

Mumokuteki Cafe is a must visit in Kyoto. Read on to find out why:
For starters, the restaurant is spacious and cosy at the same time. Beautifully decorated and has a chill vibe.
The food is amazing— and it’s all vegan! It’s a little pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for here. We sprung for the gozen (set menu) that features katsu, karaage, and hamburg steak. It came with a few side dishes and uncommonly delicious brown rice. It tasted a lot like my Japanese mother-in-law’s cooking, which is a VERY good thing. The New York cheesecake was amazing too.
To top it all off, the staff is super friendly and everything is spotlessly clean. We
can’t recommend Mumokuteki Cafe enough!
