Good restaurant, better desserts! - Edit
This is a good lunch and dinner restaurant with classic Japanese cuisine. They have a great omurice and curry. The menu is a bit limited but what they have is full of flavour. The desserts are amazing with loads of strawberry’s and tiramisu.

We got the mix set and ‘omurice’ - we thought everything was good but nothing blew us apart. However, definitely worth going to.

Vegan Cafe offering lots of meal set options. Our favourite part of the meal was the fried okara which tasted like mock KFC chicken bites. Relaxing atmosphere of Japanese / scandi vibes. Lovely space!

Not as great as it used to be - Edit
I ate here the first time in 2012. Loved it back then! Went back in 2017, still great!
Read moreAnd again this year: don't like it that much anymore. I'm sad to even write this. The flavors used to be amazing, now they're just kinda okay.
You can choose any dish and add certain beverages for 350 yen or a drink and a soft icecream for plus 800 yen. Mains tend to be between 1800 and 2500yen.
They have an English menu. Toilet: yes. Wifi: yes, but didn't work that day.
Pros: Lunch sets, Centrally located
Cons: More expensive than other places, Used to be amazing, now just okay

Disappointed :( - Edit
After reading the recent reviews for here and Ain Soph we decided this place was a safe bet... Sadly the food we received was quite bland and the dessert (parfait) was not good. I did the large platter with three items with wee sides (miso cutlets, okra bites and burger patty with salad, pickles, and other bits and pieces) and my wife got the omelette rice. It all looked great, mostly (the 'omelette' was undercooked/ runny), but it was downhill from there sadly (okra bites were great though).
Read moreFor the parfait's (2) it seems they'd either prep'd and frozen the base, including fruit, then added the ice-cream and tiramusu before serving with some more frozen fruit on top. It was quite icy throughout, with a bland jelly in the bottom and partly frozen, crumbly cake.
In the last few days we've been really lucky overall so this was a bit of a bummer, especially as recent reviews from others had been so good :(

Excellent lunch in nice surrounds - Edit
We ordered the “Mumokuteki 3 kinds of special gozen”. It was beautifully presented and had lots of different side dishes to taste. We followed it with a jelly-like dessert , which came with yummy condiments. I think it was warambimochi which I had read about it as a specialty of this region and had been wanting to try. I was so happy to see they offered it in this all vegan cafe (saw it on the Japanese menu but not the English one) so I could be sure it didn’t have any gelatine in it. It was delicious! Would definitely recommend this place.

Amazing desserts - Edit
A great place to convince a non vegan that vegan desserts can be yummi! Tiramisu and cheesecake made of cashew milk. Best dessert ever! The setting is a great spot for a break in the busy Nishiki district. There ls an elevator avalaible ( strollers/wheelchairs), however not easy to find.

Loved it!! - Edit
I had a delightful meal here. Really enjoyed the Balance of pickles, rice, tempura, style, vegetables, salad in the lunch I had. There was even a tiny glass of vegetable juice in the middle of the tray with all the food. Very special and a lovely atmosphere, great attentive staff. I also had a super yummy Matcha smoothie style drink to finish. I’m certainly recommending this place and they have some information about their sustainability and their ethics on the front of the menu which is great to read about.

Better than expected food, a tad tricky to find - Edit
It took us two attempts to actually find this place, it's on the second floor and the entrance is in the back of a rather large shop selling a whole bunch of eco-fashion stuff. But I'm glad we kept trying as the food was very good and the portions were excellent.
Read moreSet meals consisting of a few main choices with a host of side dishes that go along. We each got a different one and both were very tasty. We finished off with some vegan ice cream, my partner loved it, I thought that part was a bit average & icy.
For a place that was a touch hard to find, there was easily 15 people waiting to go up when it opened (we arrived like 10 minutes before it opened). It's a fair size place upstairs so that wasn't an issue and in true Japanese fashion, they opened the doors the exact minute that they said they would.
Pros: tasty food, good portions
Cons: challenging to find

Still cool. - Edit
Mumokuteki was one of only a few restaurants offering vegan food in Kyoto years ago. I am glad they turned fully vegan & was able to keep their customers.
Read moreWe were lucky to be seated without waiting during Gion matsuri and ordered one Gozen set with karaage and one with katsu style fry with miso paste.
As always, the experience, the ambience , the hall staff - all lovely.
When it comes to food, the taste was a bit too mild for me. Karaage is only seasoned on outside, probably not marimated before, all of the small “okazu” side dishes are cold during summer and taste similarly.

Cute little restaurant, amazing flavor! - Edit
This review is a bit old but nonetheless i remember my experience here with my Sensei and classmate who were visiting for a month long KHIIS trip in college. The food was something I've never had before and If i could i would have licked the plate clean haha! I remember getting some sort of falafel meal with rice and a few other things that came with it (sorry for the vague food description this was in 2017 😅) i loved every single bite!

I've been there several times to try different dishes and was never disappointed. Their yuba omelette rice is super creamy and mild, the best vegan omelette I've had so far. Don't forget to try also their great tofu hamburger!

Today, I had lunch at mumokuteki, a trendy vegan restaurant in Kyoto. The restaurant is not only a restaurant but also a part of the restaurant that is like a "vegetarian" Muji, selling locally sourced organic food, comfortable and simple clothing and decorations, handmade utensils, and well-preserved vintage furniture.
Read moreTheir lunch is a fine selection of brown rice 🍚 , curried pumpkin, pickled potatoes 🥔 , vegetables 🥬 , radishes, etc., served with lettuce salad, fried plant steak 🍃🥩 with special sauce, and miso soup.
The best part is the dessert - sundae! A frosting made from soy milk 🍼 , topped with black coffee ☕️, and served with tiramisu, blueberries 🫐, and strawberries 🍓, it's a taste you won't find anywhere else!

Delicious meal set - Edit
One of the tastiest vegan meal sets I tried on my visit to Japan. First of all, the staff were wonderful, explaining every dish on the tray when it arrived and very polite and patient as I fumbled my way through ordering in Japanese (they did speak enough english to the people next to us though). And they gave us english menus immediately. The place itself was on the second floor and we sat by the window. Very comfortable seating and tables and calm relaxing atmosphere. The food was fresh and tasty, salad crisp and fruits sweet. Every mouthful was a joy and so flavoursome. The combinations of flavours worked really well. So glad we found this place, was almost going to go back the next day.

Tasty, but small portion - Edit
The food was very nice. Especially the fried stuff 😀 Salads seemed a bit plain to me and I could definitely use a larger portion overall, but still great place for lunch. Definitely would recommend.
