Super Lecker! - Edit

Delicious - Edit
Edit: came here feb 23 first time. Back after nearly a year and it’s still one of my fav places in town. Highly recommend the vegan beef on their menu. I think it’s the first one listed
Read moreLove it here - also great opening times
Lovely restaurant on the second floor the owner has an impressive story from a street kid to an entrepreneur. But we should focus on the food (he kinda gives everyone his story written down )
The food is delicious and heaps for 95k you get not only the food you order but a tasty vegan soup
Salad with chili lime dressing
Tofu with tomato sauce and spices/leaves and rice
It’s easy to find once you see the pathway leading up
Very friendly owner and lovely ladies cooking (because they do the work.) he is not vegan though
The whole menu is vegan
I ordered the recommendation: Gà são daur chay: Fried vegan chicken with vegetables 95k
The chicken and also ordered the beef!
Free wifi

Pros: Fully vegan , Great flavour , Comes with extra dishes
Cons: Vegan chicken is more like beef, More expensive , Don’t like he squeezed lime without washing hands

Amazing quality, amazing service, amazing value - Edit
I ate so much of the free tofu that I could barely eat the dishes I ordered!
Read moreI got spring rolls and the vegan pork, however before it arrives, you're welcomed with a bowl of salads, sauces, tofu and rice and shown by the owner how the locals eat. It was great.
They even topped everything up when I finished it and a 3rd bowl of tofu on top.
I left extremely warm and full, and all of the staff treated me like family. I will be back!

Great food - Edit
What a wonderful discovery to find this vegetarian restaurant. There were 4 of us who had dinner at Katze.
Read moreWe found Katze via Google Map. We saw the restaurant sign from the road, but to access the restaurant, we had to walk through a narrow alley until we came to a sign pointing to a staircase leading to the 2nd floor.
The food is just superb. A good choice to choose from. All the seats were taken up and a constant flow of patrons kept coming in. Looks like it's especially popular with foreigners. A must try, if you visit Hanoi. The restaurant does not in away look up market. Infact it looks pretty run down. But let not the "looks" of the restaurant detract you from the food and the kind owner.
The owner is ever helpful. Humble and smiling all the time. Has a Happy, Bright and Kind face. Showed us the "correct" way to eat what we ordered.
We saw the following write-up.
We wish him well and may he be always Happy and successful in his endeavors! #Veganuary

A lot of food for little money - Edit
I’m not a huge fan of this place. Yes it is cute that it’s family run and nice that they tell you how to eat like Vietnamese people, but the food didn’t feel fresh and healthy to me. You get a lot of free extra food to try, which is nice, but if you also order food it’s a lot.😅 Nice to experience, but I would not go back.

Hidden Gem - Edit
Just flew in from Ho Chi Minh City, tired and hungry. Came here because it was close. You enter through a narrow hallway and up two flights of stairs. Don’t be put off. The food was plentiful and amazing. Can I give 7 stars? The two of us ate a full meal plus fresh rolls and two large beers for a total of $15 USD. But what makes this place special is that the food is just so darn good.

I little hidden, meaning you really need to know this place otherwise you won’t walk in. The food was great and we ordered too much as we forgot about the free dishes. But the taste was just great!😄can really recommend going there. #Veganuary

So much food - Edit
As others have explained, you get a soup, rice and a protein (for me, it was tofu) for free with every main. While that's amazing, it was way too much food for me as a solo diner. Taste was incredible and service very nice.

The entry is little hidden and the ambience is ok but the food is really amazing. It's the best vegan food we had in Vietnam. The vegan chicken is so delish. They serve unlimited tofu and soup and rice. The story of the owner is very inspiring.

You get FREE tofu until your full, FREE rice and soup, you just have to order one main dish. Sounds to good to be true? My oh my, I would have said the same, but: this is real. In Hanoi in Katze.

Good but overhyped - Edit
Katze is a cozy spot on the second floor. The main dishes are quite pricy for what you get, but you get the free side dishes (to kind of make up for that I think). As other comments have said, you'll get salad, tofu, a truly great dipping sauce, soup and rice. The food was good, but all kind of similar. We really enjoyed the vegan beef in pepper sauce, and the tofu in tomato saus.
Read moreI felt kind of bad about the huge bowl of soup and rice that was still left over at the end, and at a certain point we didn't want to finish any dishes in case they brought even more.
I personally don't really like the vibe of the owner coming by to show you how to best eat the food (he literally fed my bf a bite), and showing a paper with his life story to everyone when leaving. But a lot of other people seemed to enjoy it so you do you🤷♀️. He's not pushy or anything, which I was worried about after reading the comments.
It can get very busy in the evening.

Must-Visit Restaurant With A Story Behind It. - Edit
A really unique and worthwhile eating experience in Hanoi. The actual restaurant involves going through an alley from the main street and up a set of stairs. It is a really small space with limited seating considering how popular the place can get. The queue can stretch down these stairs, back out into the street! It did make us quite aware of how much time we spent at our table while others were waiting.
Read moreThe menu is quite confusing, but basically, along with whatever you order, you are going to be given additional rice, a tofu dish, a big salad and a dipping sauce. So what you're really being asked, is to order additional protein/vegetables dishes to go along side. They recommend ordering three different proteins but, honestly, this seems far too much and many other tables were unable to finish their food. As a family of four, we ordered one protein and one vegetable dish and we could not finish anything (they brought 2x orders of the complementary plates - which was very generous considering two of our party were children).
The taste of the dishes is really great and the lime, salt and chilli dipping sauce that you were provided with, is delicious to just dip everything in. The owner will also walk around showing you how to eat the various dishes, sometimes in a very hands-on way!
A word of warning, the bathroom is definitely best avoided. It flooded upon a single use when we were there.
The owner does put his story upfront for customers to read about it and his journey from being a street kid and the effort he made to open and run his restaurant, while continuing to donate portions of the profits to helping street kids now, is quite inspiring and worthy of support.
This is not a fine dining establishment but is still entirely worth a night of your time as the food experience is really good and it's a memorable time.
Pros: Incredibly Generous Amount Of Dishes., Engaged And Welcoming Service., Great Story And Values Behind The Place.
Cons: Very Limited Seating Leads To Huge Queues., Menu Can Be Quite Confusing In Its Wording., Bathroom Is Pretty Grim.

Excellent food, although very confusing at first. Basically you order 1 main dish from the menu and that comes with rice, tofu dish, soup, salad, plus the main course. The tofu dish seems to be unlimited as they kept topping it up. Delicious food and well worth the visit. The owner has a touching story which you can read about while you're there.

Great quantity - must go if you are really hungry! - Edit
The starting price of dishes are slightly higher than I was used to (not less than 80-95k), but anything you order comes with several complimentary dishes (green leaf veggies, tofu in tomato sauce, rice, soup) as stated on the first page of the menu, so it is very much worth it quantity wise and taste too. The waitress made the chili lime sauce right at my table, the smell of freshly squeezed limes was great!
Read moreThe menu also says that a Vietnamese family would order a variety of things to share, but if I would not recommend it if you are only 1-2pp, the food would be plenty!!
William the owner was very kind and took time to personally thank everyone eating there upon leaving.

Underwhelming - Edit
I wanted to enjoy this place, but I really didn't. Their menu is confusing and convinces you to order a lot more food than is needed - there is a page in the menu that tells you what a usual order for a family would look like. As two people, we decided to order under half of this. The staff didn't bat an eyelid. What came were huge portions of side dishes. When the dishes we ordered came out, we realised we only needed 1, if that. Not 2 + a starter.
Read moreThe food itself was okay, but nothing special. I'd go as far as to say that some of it looked repurposed (I'm not the first one to say this). Which isn't surprising when you see how much food people end up ordering, and how much gets left behind. Over portioned food isn't a positive for me - I hate food waste, so I wish they'd encourage people to order less.
We paid for our 400k meal with 500k, but were never offered any change. It was already overpriced for 2 people and way more than what we've ever spent for one meal in a local family eatery in Vietnam. That being said, it isn't about the money, it's about the honesty and attitude of the staff. In comparison, many local chay eateries will refuse tips when you even try offer.
Then when we went to leave we were told to sit back down so we could read his story. Which felt like a bit of a guilt trip when at the end of his story it tells you to leave positive reviews. I've spent quite a few years in Vietnam and eaten in a lot of small local eateries run by people with similar backgrounds, and never been pressured into leaving positive reviews before.
If you are looking for really tasty local vegan food in the area, hit up places like the Buddhist-run Quán Phở Chay anh Hải, not far from Katze.
