Anise Place You’ve Got Here - Edit
One of many benefits of living in such an ethnically diverse city is the exposure to a plethora of cultural festivities and, better still, the food-related traditions that invariably accompany them. Eid is one prime example and is arguably the premier event on the UAE calendar. As such, there is no shortage of culinary happenings with which to celebrate this most auspicious of occasions. In dining here, I think I may have uncovered one of its best – if only in terms of hospitality, if nothing else.
Read moreSuitably decked out for proceedings, the restaurant itself was light, bright, and contemporary, thanks in no small part to towering walls of glass that offered glimpses of the bay beyond. As charming as the outlook was, even on this sodden day, the sight of the sprawling spread was even more pleasing.
Starting with the Levantine-inspired fayre first seemed the most apt thing to do, and it did not disappoint. Succulent, plump vine leaves, crisp, well-seasoned batata harra, and rich, tangy muhammara all thoroughly impressed, though not quite as much as what could arguably have been the standout of the entire meal: the couscous. Composed of the infinitely superior pearl variety, this was no mere side dish – balanced, hearty, and anything but bland, it has undoubtedly set the benchmark against which other such iterations will be judged.
By departing from these Middle Eastern delicacies, I ran the risk of not finding their equal, but I needn’t have worried. In every nook and cranny of the buffet lay at least one superb selection for me to fawn over.
As if all this was not enough, the preposterously friendly floor manager and equally agreeable head chef conspired to bring me a selection of personally crafted creations. Within minutes of our discussions, a beautifully piquant plate of pasta appeared before me, accompanied by an exquisite stir-fry tofu dish and, somewhat unexpectedly, a plate of vegan cheese. A curious bedfellow to pair with these two composed creations, but I wasn’t complaining.
The epitome of exemplary customer service, coupled with food of an exceedingly high calibre, makes this a destination that I would be a fool not to return to.
