Eight courses of Awesome

We found Veggie Palace by accident as one of my old faves nearby shut down. The host warned us that it was an eight-course meal, so we almost skipped out as we’d wanted a light dinner. I am so glad we didn’t! This restaurant makes delicious Cantonese food (okay, some dishes are Japanese-inspired, but the core of the meal we had was Cantonese).

Expect classics like “pork belly” and “scallops,” and of course soup (broth with inclusions which I always eat, even though you’re not really supposed to). The meal is a set menu, and everyone will get the same things. If you are super hungry, they will keep bringing rice, but I recommend you go easy on it early on as the meal will be larger than you’d expect from the first few dishes.

From memory, the cost was HKD240, making this not only delicious but one of the best value for money meals you will find in HK that’s not a dai pai dong.

Pros: Great flavours, Good for groups, Friendly service

Cons: No solo diners - grab a friend before you go! , Maybe cash only? Check first!

Meant to be very good but not for solo diners

I was highly recommended this place by a local Buddhist man. He tried to book a table for me but they only take bookings or serve 2 or more people. Apparently it is difficult for them to prepare the quite elaborate dishes for one person only.

Cons: Can't cater for solo diners

Veggie Palace, Hong Kong

I went here at 2 pm today. There were lots of empty seats and tables. The waiter told me it was minimum two people and refused to serve me as a solo diner.

Cons: Refuse to serve solo diners
