Update: Found More Things I enjoyed! - Edit
Updated review: I deeply committed to come back multiple times. My assessment is I don’t love their vegan beef, but I like their chicken. What I discovered I loved most though was their tofu! So my lesson is to make sure to try their different proteins, because they may resonate differently with you. Bumped up to 4 stars ⭐️

I’m so conflicted on 3 vs 4 stars and Happy Cow makes me pick 🙈
Good:
- Boba!
- All vegan restaurant that does an AMAZING job of replicating some dishes I never thought I’d eat again
- endless options
- the vegan meat was great!
With that said, I can’t say I *loved* my food. But for all I know it was just what I ordered and maybe something else would be better. I’ll definitely be coming back and exploring more of their menu because I think there’s probably something here I’m going to fall in love with. Keep an eye out for an edited review😄

Perhaps I ordered the wrong items? - Edit
I wanted to like it here more but everything was kind of mid Chinese food which is usually fine, but multiple dishes were too similar, for example, I don't think the kung pao should be basically identical in flavor to the Mongolian beef. Seemed popular so perhaps I just happened to have a worse meal than average.

Good tasting food but weird vibe - Edit
They have a huge menu but they aren’t very accommodating if you want to eat in. They don’t even have cutlery readily available. They don’t have extra napkins and are super stingy on salt, pepper, chili oil. I think they prefer you take food out.

Cons: Not accommodating with even basics, Weird about their hours. You must be out at 8:00, Inflexible and stingy

Hidden fees - Edit
Hidden fees. When I received my receipt I noticed there were two hidden fees.
Read more1) Service charge of 15% for parties of 5 or more. When I asked the staff about this service charge, they said it was on the menu. It turns out that this service charge is NOT on the main menu when you walk in (which the staff member acknowledged), but only in small print on the menu next to the cashier. Given that it is not on the main menu, I would expect to not be charged for it, but the staff member did not agree.
Even if the service charge was clearly labeled, these are usually reserved for places where you have a waiter and not when you are coming up to the counter to order food.
2) They charge you 5% for paying with a credit card. I am almost certain that credit card companies are not charging the restaurant 5% for credit card transactions.
If these are clearly posted then I can choose whether I want to eat there or not, but they are only evident once you pay for your meal.
Cons: Hidden fees

Very uninteresting - Edit
Aside from being vegan which is great! The rest of this place is thoroughly uninspired and tastes like microwaveable Chinese food. With a great chef and good recipes this could be a great place.

Beware: Food poisoning - Edit
I used to love this place until my bf and I got gnarly food poisoning from here, I’ve never experienced anything like it. I spoke to a friend about it afterwards and she told me they relentlessly fail the health inspections and she’s heard some gross things, and that they don’t always use vegan products. This prompted me to look up the health inspections documents from the last few years and what I discovered was disgusting. Roach infestations, food left out all day… needless to say I will never be back.

Good Vegan Eats - Edit
**Happy Cow needs to update the hours for this restaurant. I will add a picture of days and times**
Read moreThis is such a cute vegan spot. I am visiting from out of town and this was close to our hotel. The restaurant was empty when we walked in. Maybe because it was a rainy day. We were welcomed in, but the energy of the staff was super low the entire time. A group came in after us and one of the workers said, " This is why you don't say things out loud"
We got our food quick!
Everything was delicious! I would come back!

Cons: No free parking

good vegan fast food - Edit
Staff was super friendly and kind. We weren't in the mood for something really oily so thought the Vegan Bowls would be the most veggie-forward / least oily: General Tso Bowl and Teriyaki Bowl. Faux meat was still quite oily. Flavor in both was really great though. really fast service too. Also got a really delicious matcha bubble tea!

Cute downtown spot 🥦 - Edit
Fast and convenient all vegan spot in downtown Sac. The chow mein and orange “chicken” were fine. They were priced at $12.99 & $15.99 which felt a touch expensive. If you can recommend a dish from here that really impressed you, please leave it in a comment! 🙏🥦

Great vegan dishes to go. - Edit
We got the chicken chow mein, the taro tempura, the spare ribs (which tastes like the old lotus garden little red squares in SF) and came with broccoli and the eggplant with tofu. Everything was delicious. The dishes were a bit on the greasy side, but we were tired and got it delivered by uber and the food was exceptionally fresh and hot when it arrived. The vegan rib pieces were outstanding, as was the taro. The chicken chow mein was great but needed more chicken. I felt the eggplant was overly greasy and the eggplant was cut in huge pieces. To top it off we were given complimentary sesame balls with our order which were second to none.

Good food and good portions - Edit
Food is certainly good. The general tso chicken was my favorite dish but the brocoli could have been steamed more to give it a more pleasant texture. The spicy wonton appetizer was also another favorite!

How can one ever decide?! - Edit
This is my second time going to this vegan restaurant, and I was once again, struggling with deciding which meal to order… I asked the cashier to surprise me. He suggested the vegan chicken chow mein which was actually pretty delicious. Everything on the menu looks good, I love Asian food. I would very much like to sample every items, but I don’t live anywhere near the city.

Tasty and all vegan - Edit
This place is pretty darn good. The “chicken” chow mein is great, as is the hot and sour soup. I’m really just holding off on the 5 stars because I’ve had better vegan Asian food but this is still probably the best in the area. I think I’m missing just slightly more spices or punch but really, I order from them a few times a month because they have so many options so I can’t complain that much.

Lots of variety, kind of bland - Edit
The menu was huge, which was great. But the food itself was really lacking flavor. We got the orange chicken, prawns, and chicken chow mein. All three were just very underwhelming. It tasted like they were all missing some spices or something. I’ve had some really great vegan Chinese food and this just didn’t measure up.

Cockroaches found in health inspection - Edit
In October they were shut down due to a health inspection where over 400 dead/alive cockroaches were found. There were traps for them so the restaurant was aware of the infestation and still serving food. Looking at past health inspections they have always had some problems with roaches. Very gross, I would be cautious about going there.
