Friendly all vegan lunch cafe

Update: Breakfast hours : 9-10:30AM Lunch 11:30-2PM., Café drinks and desserts till 5 or 6pm. Plan accordingly, and don’t be surprised if you see a “Sold Out” sign posted on the door in the afternoon . The new option —breakfast —is healthy, tasty and filling with choices like Tempeh « BLT » on sourdough, Roasted Veggie & Hummus Tartine, Avocado Toast, etc

Veg out is easy to find on Shichi-Dori on the Kamo river and at the Keihan subway shichidori stop—just across the bridge. There’s an English menu and usually includes a hearty Buddha Bowl, Coconut Curry , Taco Rice, a Deli Plate set, soup, muffins, tea , coffee and other drinks.

Amazing for breakfast

We stayed in a hotel very close so we visitors for one lunch and 3 breakfasts!!!!
It’s western style food with a Japanese twist. The lunch was lovely but where this place really shines is breakfast. The Tempeh BLT was FABULOUS! From the sourdough with a soft chewy centre and crisp crust to the perfectly cooked tempeh and the juiciest tomatoes. (I live local food but I miss my bread when travelling - not anymore!) They sell out early so the second day we also got to try the avo toast and banana and peanut butter- both hit all the boxes but the tempeh- well this is one of my favourite meals of the week.
Also very friendly staff allowed me to practice my Japanese with gracious patience.

Pros: Delicious tempeh, Amazing sourdough, Fab staff

Cons: Closes early

Class BLT

I make tempeh BLTs all the time back home so was looking forward to having again. The bread was superb and the fillings hit the spot. Great view of the river and matcha latte was tasty too

Good breakfast

We went there because of the sourdough bread toast and it was amazing. Fully recommend it. Be careful and watch the opening times on Google, they are different from here. And be early since they run out of bread later

Very good blt breakfast sandwich. You definitely want to check the hours because we went at 3pm and they were only serving cookies.

Tranquil & delicious

Such a gorgeous setting to enjoy absolutely delicious vegan food. The vegout plate was such a fresh and varied mixed of different elements & the cold soup was silky & rich. Can also highly recommend the matcha tiramisu

Fresh veggies

The vegetables were very fresh and almost raw. The dressing went really well with the salad and the mock meat on top.
The set meal was pretty good with a lot of variety.
The small soup going with the meals were good aswell.
The portions were unexpectedly big and very filling.
It is a relaxed store with a nice view on the Kamogawa.

Went there for tea and a cake at around 3 pm. The matcha latte was good. The cake was a bit dry and crumbly which was a bit sad.

Nice location overlooking Kamo River

I've been here on multiple occasions. Food is tasty, but I always feel like the portions are not very large for their price :,)

Pros: Yummy food

Cons: Not so large portions, Kinda expensive

Buddha bowl YUM

The location is adorable & staff as well! I got the buddha bowl, which came with a small potato soup.
I don’t know what the vegan meat was in the bowl but it was divine! I also got a some extra sauce, it was really good but they don’t put a lot.

Update: i went back and tried their matcha tiramisu and UGH it was incredible

Favourite Vegan Spot in Kyoto

Tried this spot twice for lunch during a long weekend in Kyoto. There’s a view over the river, vintage records, an open kitchen which combined gives this place a lovely relaxed vibe.

The fresh healthy cuisine with an assortment of desserts makes this an excellent lunch spot!

Pros: Buddha Bowl, Veg Out Plate, Date cinnamon muffin

Tasty food, warm service, lovely river view

I’ve enjoyed three meals at Veg Out, and all were delicious and well-balanced. The coconut curry, desserts and oolong kombucha are recommendable.

Service is warm and helpful, with some English spoken. The view of the river from the window bar is charming. I’d visit more often if the menu had more options.

Enjoy!

Wonderful fresh ingredients at breakfast

What a treat! Vegetable tartine was my choice and I’d have it many times again if I didn’t want to try everything else! Coffee with a view. Wonderful end to our Kyoto trip ❤️

Tasty vegan food by the river

Amazing vegan food, with seasonal vegetables that had so much flavour! We both had the tempeh BLT for lunch, which comes with soup and a salad, for drinks we had a tumeric latte and a bonsoy latte.
(My boyfriend is vegan and I'm vegetarian)

The service was great and quick with friendly staff.

Location wise Veg Out is great, with a beautiful view of the river. It was fun to do some (water)birdwatching while waiting for our food :)

Pros: Fully vegan restaurant , Delicious food , Beautiful view because of the location

Lovely lunch

Really nice food, very friendly staff. We had the Veg Out plate and it was highly recommended by me and my partner

Edit: we came back here again later in our trip and the food was just as good, the staff just as friendly, and if we were staying in Japan longer we probably would have come back again. We also had cakes on our 2nd trip and they were good (blueberry pie and chocolate muffin)!

Great

Lovely place. Very busy at lunchtime on a Saturday. Delicious Buddha bowl which came with a little soup which I didn’t realise.
Great, pretty matcha and views of river if seated in the solo window facing seats

Great spot, even better food

When I stayed in Kyoto I would get a soy chai each day. The maple, walnut and cinnamon muffins are delcious, and for breakfast I'm sure everything on the menu is great but the tempeh BLT was out-of-this-world good and super filling. Nice view looking out over the river too, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff.

Lovely view

Lots of various toast/bread options for breakfast, and the coffee was delicious. Really loved the location and the beautiful view while enjoying a meal. The staff member that served us was a little cold, but perhaps he was just having a bad day!
Update: increasing from 4 to 5 stars, as it turns out there are very limited vegan breakfast options in Kyoto (at least around this area), and this was a fantastic breakfast. We went back several times and the food was delicious, and all the other staff members we interacted with were lovely!

Delicious vegan food!

Veg Out is our favorite cafe in Kyoto. When we were here 5 years ago, we had breakfast here almost every day of our stay. It’s the same this time. The location (right next to the river — great birdwatching!), service, ambiance and food are wonderful. The vibe is relaxed and casual. The hot chocolate is perfection!

Pros: Food, Service , Ambiance/location

Great cafe and incredible view

This cafe was warmly recommended to us, we decided to go for breakfast. What is distinctive in Japan, as a rule, only a specific part of the menu is available, according to the time of day. Various toasts and granola were available for breakfast, and of course drinks. We ordered toast with tempeh and homemade granola with soy yogurt, cappuccino with oat milk and also matcha latte. The granola was incredibly delicious, as was the tempeh in the toast, the drinks are also very good. It may have taken a little while to cook, but quite a lot of people came at the same time, so I understand. Credit cards are accepted, and there is also a gorgeous view of the river from the window.

Healthy vegan lunch

Everything was fresh and flavorful. The homemade ginger ale was intense! The curry was good, but not amazing. The Buddha bowl was better, with what I believe was seitan tempura. I found the cake and muffin dry and crumbly, but interesting.

Pros: Sustainable vegan food, River view , Friendly and fast
