OISHI - Edit
We loved this spot. The tofu hummus sandwich is so good, the smoothie was delicious and the coffee was great. Glad we stumbled across it. We want to come back if we can—- and the owner is really nice and sweet.

Lecker aber zu teuer - Edit
Wir hatten drei Sandwiches und den Avocado Toast. Geschmacklich sehr gut aber die Portionen waren sehr klein und dafür dann definitiv zu teuer.

Pumpkin Muffin - Edit
Great food. Had the tofu sandwich, pumpkin muffin, and an iced oat latte. The family running it was so nice and friendly. A nice spot with a cat theme. They are vegetarian but lots of vegan options.

My partner and I both got one of the tofu sandwiches, a match latte and pumpkin muffin each. The muffin was warm and fluffy, the match was refreshing and the sandwich was perfectly satisfying

Really lovely cafe - Edit
The food and service was really food, the only reason for not giving five stars, is the price being quite a bit higher than most others in the area.

Delicious Sandwiches, Smoothies, and Treats - Edit
Delicious food! As Californians, we didn't find the prices high. The sandwiches had a little spice and the muffin was amazing. We also enjoyed a strawberry smoothie and a banana cardamom smoothie. The owner, Harsha Sharma, was so sweet. She was very clear about what's vegan vs. vegetarian. Most of the sandwiches are vegan. We arrived mid-afternoon when it was quiet. She, along with her Japanese employee, also gave us lots of tips on where to visit outside Kyoto. Arigato Goziamasu!

good but way too expensive - Edit
The servers were nice. Food wise, I was slightly shocked that I had to pay the equivalent of almost 10 euros for it, and when I saw the tiny sandwich on the plate I was very disappointed. The sandwich did taste good.

Fresh and simple, with small vegan selection - Edit
Shio Veg Cafe’s plant-based offerings are comprised of essentially four freshly made elements in different configurations: hummus, mushrooms, avocado and bread. As long as you’re happy with some combination of these four things (e.g. avo toast, or a mushroom sandwich with hummus), then there’s something for you here.
Read moreIf you’re particularly hungry, note that portions are a bit on the modest side here so you might need more than one item to fill the void (which can drive up the cost of a full meal, too).

Expensive + upcharge for vegan milk - Edit
Really disappointing to see a place that prides itself on being a “veg cafe” charge 100 yen extra on top of an already expensive 550 (or 650, I forget) yen latte. The space was cozy, but the coffee tasted a bit burnt and the oat milk wasn’t emulsified at all, so the latte was more like an americano with oat milk poured in that separated and fell to the bottom.
Read moreI hate writing negative reviews, but unfortunately the only positives here were the space itself and the adorably grumpy looking cozy kitty.
ShioVegCafe
Thank you for sharing your experience at Shio Veg Cafe. Firstly, Oat milk costs us twice the amount that we pay for cow milk. Yes, it will cost you extra. We have a black board where we have written that oat milk will be +100 Yen more. Your drink costs that much not only because of the ingredients cost but because we have other bills to pay as well, like rent, electricity bill, water bill, our workers and more. If you are unhappy with our prices, you are always free to leave. Please check our menu and other information on google maps or our Instagram account where the prices are visible.
Read moreThis is the first time we got a complaint regarding the coffee being burnt and being like an americano with oat milk. Our coffee is made of 100% Arabica beans and is medium roast. We use the ECM/ElektronikaProfi2 machine to pull our espresso shots. The machine automatically starts to prepare the espresso shot, it does not burn the coffee. Americano contains water, we definitely do not put water in our lattes. We apologize if it did not taste good to you. However, we have had customers ordering not once but 3 oat milk lattes in one sitting because they enjoyed the drink.

Delicious and cozy - Edit
This restaurant is cozy and feels like home . The food is delicious and filling. We had a Mushroom-Hummus Toast, an Avocado-Toast and a Tofu-Sandwich. We also tried a Lemon Poppy Seed Muffin, that was especially good. The next time I am coming to Kyoto, I will for sure come again. Highly recommend😄

Refuel and Recharge here! - Edit
After a busy day sightseeing we found Shio Veg Cafe, and what a find it was! Really friendly and helpful staff, who for example reassured us that the bread here is vegan, and not like much of bread in Japan containing milk or even egg!
Read moreAnything on the menu that does not contain cheese can be vegan. I enjoyed a delicious Guacamole Toast and ginger and lemon tea. For a sweet treat I chose the pumpkin muffin.
This was just what I needed as I was fading fast! A very late lunchtime light meal and a friendly welcoming atmosphere.
I’d highly recommend if you are in the area and need a pick me up! #Veganuary

Amazing vegetarian food - Edit
I loved loved this place. The owner and daughter put love and care into every dish, and it clearly shows. The food is modern American with a hint of Indian, and the location has several dishes that have ingredients that are extremely hard to find in Japan, such as avocado and American sourdough. I can’t recommend this place enough (btw it only has a fee reviews bc it just opened in sept 2024)

Delicious, fresh, friendly - Edit
I can't believe this place doesn't have more reviews! It is a vegan sanctuary in the generally veg-hostile landscape of Japanese cuisine. The tofu sub sandwich was hearty and delicious, the drinks were amazing, and they offered oat milk and almond milk. The staff are very friendly and have great English.
