One of the World's Best Vegan Spots - Edit
To Stachi offers traditional Greek dishes and casseroles that are naturally vegan (and some vegetarian dishes with the option to make vegan). This is my favorite kind of food! Slow cooked "gigante" beans in the most tasty sauce you have ever tried! Vegetable casseroles and seasonal specials like chestnuts and pearl onions, and vegan versions of Greek favorites such as moussaka and pasticio. I was in Chania for over a month and I ate at To Stachi many times - always wonderful, with a warm and welcoming staff to match. It's owned and operated by the kindest people, the dad is the chef and the delightful daughters work the front of the house and make you feel welcome. A really special spot not only in Crete, but in the world.

Amazing Vegan Greek Food! - Edit
I’m of Greek background and was skeptical at first. But wow. We’ve been there everyday we have been here and the food is delicious and authentically made and flavoured. Vegan mousaka too! From whole food plant based options to pastitso there are a lot of terrific options. Their daily specials are often the go to choice they’re so good! Wonderful owners, staff and an awesome chef who deeply cares. We would strongly recommend this place!

great place! - Edit
such a sweet owner! he opened the place 15 minutes before it was time because he saw we were waiting with a baby. the place opens up at 12:30 and because we were early he didn’t have all the menu ready on the spot so he told us what’s ready or almost ready. we had the gemista- tomato, vine leavea and zukini flowers filled with rice and hearbs. was nice, had better vine leaves in crete. also had the gigantes- ginat beans with tomato sause that were nice and amazing vegan mousaka!!! with almond cream in top! we got halva cake and grapes for desert “on the house”. I really recomand going to this special place there are so many diahea and the owner is an amazing greek man!

Amazing! - Edit
This was by far the best meal I’ve had in Crete. There were so many vegan options it was hard to choose. The dolmadakia and zucchini flowers were perfection, the green beans tasty, and I was thrilled to find pastisio (Greek lasagna) which was my favorite childhood dish, and one I haven’t had in years due to obvious reasons. Vegans visiting Chania: do yourself a favor and go here, and then go back!

Lovely traditional Greek food - Edit
We met a lovely waitress who was also vegan and had been for 2 years. This is a family run business. We had the moussaka, spinach pie and fava. All great tasting and wonderful local dishes. This was finished off with a vegan Galaktoboureko made with almond milk. All the food was delicious, it's in a nice quiet location just outside the harbour definitely worth a visit to experience some vegan local cuisine. We will definitely go again on our next trip to the island.

A taste of Cretan summer - Edit
I went here with people I love.
Read moreWe ordered a variety of beatiful, rustic, ORGANIC Cretan dishes from the well-assorted menu, and were excited to watch as the wonderful staff filled the table with wonderful vegan delights. One dish in particular was so exquisite that I still talk about it - the stuffed zucchini flowers (anthoi) and vine leaves (dolmades).
To Stachi instantly become one of my favourite vegan spots in the world! I will come back again (and again) ready to get another taste of this magnificent island's incredible food! In my opinion this is the place to experience the taste of Crete! Thank you.

If Odysseus had been vegan.... - Edit
I visited "To Stachi" this summer with my friend (vegan) and his grandparents (not vegan at all), and we all LOVED it! I spoke with the owner's daughter, who waiters there, and her mother. Both beautiful people, welcoming and open - just like the taverna.
Read moreThe food there is classic greek, just better. We ordered a bunch of different items on the menu (and mixed it up a bit - which was totally fine with the staff and kitchen). When you go there, order the Dolmades and Anthoi. You will be happy!

Wonderful! - Edit
Just an update(prior review left below), as it was three years ago that we went. This time we went on a family trip to Crete with my husband's family, and I have been vegan for 1.5yrs now(was vegetarian for 20+yrs), so it was interesting to see Crete again with vegan eyes. Most of the items on the menu are still vegan, and tasted just as wonderful as how I remembered them. This time I had the moussaka, and the eggplants as a starter. In Crete, it is typical to always get served a free small dessert, so here it was nice that the dessert was a vegan cake. The other's had the stifado with chestnuts and dark gigantes...I stole a bite from my husband and it was just as delicious as before.

Once again, Happy Cow leads us to a gem. Cretan food is already very wonderful and full of local flavours, but it's so nice to have a place like this that is all vegetarian and very vegan friendly. I had the pumpkin starter and the moussaka. Both were great. My husband had the Spanokopita and the Bouraki. The Bouraki was really wonderful...it had pumpkin, goat cheese, and potato, with a pastry crust. We're driving to the east tomorrow, so we plan to stop along the way for another meal. They were our of the eggplant and raisins, so if that's available, I plan to try that along with a main, and my husband wants to try the chestnuts. You'll be full with a starter and a main dish. The young woman serving us was also very friendly...reading other reviews it sounds like she is the owner's daughter.
*Update: We ended up going again and it was equally as delicious. The eggplant starter...wow. perfectly cooked eggplants topped with raisins, pomegranate seeds, pine nuts, and wonderful herbs. I had the stuffed zucchini flowers, with the option of a stuffed tomato...really, really so good. My husband had the chestnuts with onions in a wine sauce...unbelievable! We also got to meet Stalios this time. Such a kind and compassionate man. You can really tell he puts so much care and sincerity into everything. I've eaten at a lot of vegetarian places on my travels, and this has to be one of my favourites so far.
