In between 3⭐️ and 4⭐️ - Edit
There's a vegetarian section on the menu, and vegan dishes are clearly labelled.
Read moreThere are 2 vegan starters, several vegan mains, but unfortunately no vegan desserts.
We ordered
Starters:
- basket of papadams 4,5€
- pakoras 12€
Mains:
- Allo Gobhi mattar 19€
- chana masala 18,50€
- and garlic naan 5,5€
Came with white rice
Drinks virgin mojito 11€ and tonic 3,80€.
Asked a sparkling water for the mojito, bc it was mainly ice and syrup. Way too sweet.
The papadams are noted on the menu as being with chutneys. When they were served, I saw a greenish yoghurt like sauce and asked whether that was vegan? Ah, oops, no it isnt. So there was just one chutney/sauce.
The main dishes were nice. More than enough portion. Medium spicy.
There's a front room and a main restaurant room, with the bar/counter. We were in the front room, and luckily it was much quieter there. I wouldn't have enjoyed it so much in the other room, rather loud.
Nice decor, restaurant feel, dimmed lights. Chairs were not so comfy though (and table a bit low).
Staff were hurrying, and it did take a while for food to be served, but it was a full house (note: def make a reservation). Friendly, but reserved.
Asked about vegan dessert? No, we dont have any, but they are available at their other resto Garlic n Greens. Pity, they could at least make 1 of the desserts vegan.
Not accessible: large steps to get in. Toilets at the back. Clean. Paper towels to dry ones hands. Didnt see an accessible toilet.

Very tasty - Edit
Two things to note:
Read more1. They’ve moved location, and the old location does show on google maps and still has a menu and storefront so make sure you go to the right place.
2. The people who run this also run garlic n greens (all veggie Indian down the road).
You’d think because of point 2 I’d say don’t bother with here, but even though the dishes were very similar the ones I had here (particularly the aloo Gobi) were maybe slightly better. It was really nice and vegan peshwari naan is a rarity.

Tasty curry and friendly staff - Edit
Fancied a curry and went for a vegetable kadai with rice. All the naans were vegan, which is very unusual, so I was able to have a (much missed) peshwari naan, which was great.

The vegetable mix curry was very delicious. Would totally recommend to eat it with the "sweet" naan, which had coconut, raisins and nuts in it.

Great food and informed staff - Edit
After having been disappointed by other vegan restaurants in Bruges being closed or rude, we came to the Taj Mahal just hoping to be able to eat, but it surpassed our expectations. Not only did the waitress speak exceptional English, she was helpful and informed, able to tell us exactly how everything was made and what was vegan/could be made vegan. The atmosphere was great, friendly but not too loud, and the food was really delicious (I had Vegetable Makhani and my wife had Saag Panner, not vegan obviously). The mushroom rice was to die for! As a plus, we were given a complimentary bowl of rice and some poppadoms, just to make it even more wonderful! Also, the naan is vegan (they don't put yoghurt in it). It was more than I would normally pay for a curry, but the whole city of Bruges is expensive and this restaurant is not pretentious/doesn't seem to overcharge.

Knowledgeable staff - Edit
Great staff, she totally knew exactly everything we would want and how to make each dish vegan. The dishes were exceptional. I loved every bite. It was very pricey.

Great curry, fantastic flavours - Edit
We had a great experience at Taj Mahal: a small Indian restaurant just off the main square. A full page of veggie options, with a good half been vegan.
Read moreFlavours were amazing, and the potatoes in the aloo ghobi were incredible.
Only reason it's not a 5* this time, and purely down to our expectations; wait time for food, and rather burnt naans.
Would recommend to anyone after a veggie vegetarian vegan curry in Bruges.

Lovely Indian restaurant! - Edit
Lovely little place with nice staff and fantastic food - the mixed vegetable curry I had was probably the tastiest veg curry I've ever had! They even off Indian liqueurs for after your meal 😊

A traditional Indian restaurant with some vegan options. My curry was very tasty and they offer the option of how spicy you want the food.

delicious - Edit
Very nice quality Indian food. Asked for no diary and waitress guessed immediately that we were vegan. Do not asking for tap water, they don't seem to approve and it was a little embarrassing for us :/ even though we bought 2 drinks each the food was spicy so complimentary water would have been nice

Great food, slow service - Edit
Overall the food was delicious, in fact one of the best Indian meals I've had. I give this four stars. Even though I can't give 5 stars to a non-vegan venue, I would still only opt for four out of five.
Read moreHere's my account:
Food - waited at least 40mins for the main (after receiving the starters) but when it arrived it was outstanding. We had the Dahl and chickpea curry plus pillal rice and two rotis. They had great depth of flavour, wonderful subtlety to the spice, fluffy rice delicately flavoured. Crispy rotis nicely baked. Good sized portions. Cannot fault the food at all. I note that we came in at the same time as a few other tables and not everyone had slow service.
Note that you get rice as standard with the curries. We had 4 pappadums to start and got a very stingy portion of tasty pickle, I requested more and got a second very stingy portion. The pickle was served alongside a non-descript sugary sauce - maybe mango? I'm not sure, it was just odd.
Vegan choices - there were 4 main options - chickpea curry and Dahl (def recommend) plus a cauliflower and potato dish and a mixed veg curry (these I didn't try). There's a dedicated vegetarian menu with lots of paneer options.
Service - average. Not super attentive and they were understaffed which left one poor woman running ragged. Service was therefore slow, drink was forgotten and had to be reminded. Good knowledge of veganism and as such I found out the Naan has milk in so avoided this (roti and chapatis available instead).
Hygiene of staff was good, I'm a stickler for simply having the basics i.e. hair being tied back, staff wearing clean clothes/aprons, no nose/face wiping :)
Overall Cleanliness - good in the restaurant but toilet not good. Needs a good clean.
Other things - they don't take cards so cash only. How is this possible in the centre of Bruges??? Don't bother asking for tap water, it's a flat out "no", you can only buy it from the bottle. I dont know what it is about Bruges but I had this when I came years ago, it's just not a thing in Bruges and so I'm giving up trying to ask from this day fourth.
Pros: excellent food, good choices for vegans, dedicated vegetarian menu
Cons: slow service/food, cash only

Unfortunately asking for tap water is still considered a 'not done' in restaurants in Belgium. Well, one can ask, but there are few that will provide it (free of charge anyway). I hope this can change, so the more people ask, ...
