Lovely vegan restaurant - Edit
The menu is great - lots of small plates and some larger meal options. I've taken a few non-vegetarian friends and family here now and everyone has enjoyed the food. Their Sunday roast is great too.

Great all vegan restaurant in Chester - Edit
Good mezzo and sharing menu. The crispy teriyaki tofu and the potato terrine were especially good. If you’re vegan and coming to Chester, this is the place to eat.

It's probably the best food I've eaten in ages. Would spend a fortune in there if I lived closer.

One of the best eateries in Chester for vegans - Edit
Shrub is the cornerstone of plant-based food in Chester. It’s been around for quite a while now but the novelty certainly hasn’t worn off and its mix of small plate options and ‘proper’ mains is as fresh as the day it opened.
Read moreService is always excellent, the vibe is great, and the menu, which changes slightly over time, is interesting and delicious. We even held a birthday at Shrub in the function room upstairs and it was amazing, enjoyed by even the most cynical of non-vegans!
Pros: Exciting food options, Great service, Pretty good value

Insanely good food 🫶🏼 - Edit
I had tried shrub at VCO so I knew I was in for a treat. Everything was divine. My favorite had to be tofu and the artichoke wings.

Love it here; we visit maybe once a month. Love the little sharing plates, love the Sunday roast. Not had anything that we haven’t really enjoyed. Lovely location, atmosphere and staff. A must visit for lunch or dinner if you’re in the area!

Amazing food - Edit
This was my first vegan tapas experience. Every plate was a flavour explosion. I don't usually do desert but I couldn't skip an opportunity to try it considering how good the mains were! The staff were lovely. It was a wonderful evening

Fantastic food and atmosphere - Edit
We visited on a sunny Friday afternoon and really enjoyed sitting outside. We had focaccia, tenderstam broccoli, teriyaki tofu and ragù and for dessert a chocolate mint cheesecake and lemon posset. I could not choose a favourite dish as they were all delicious although I will mention that the lemon posset was perfectly refreshing to finish the meal in the sunshine. I feel the food is very good value and we were made to feel very welcome.

Underwhelming - Edit
I expected the food to be really tasty for a vegan restaurant, but it was nothing special. I really fancied a burger so despite hating fake meat, I ordered the burger at £10 and fries for £4.50. The burger was really small. It tasted fine but did look and taste like meat. I don't understand why a vegan restaurant chooses to use a meat substitute for their burger, there are so many better options. (Apparently they changed from Beyond Meat a few weeks ago but it was pretty much the same as that).
Read moreThe restaurant seemed style over substance. It's called Shrub yet all the plants are plastic.
Pros: Decor (minus the plastic shrubs)
Cons: Fake meat, Lacking flavour

Eating our way through the menu - Edit
We were impressed by Shrub's offerings at Vegan Camp Out 2024 (particularly the szechuan fries!), so when we decided to get away for a few nights in Chester, visiting their restaurant was at the top of our list.
Read moreFirstly, we weren't prepared for how gorgeous the restaurant is. As if being located in The Rows wasn't beautiful enough, the decor and atmosphere were stunning, and they even had a cosy outdoor balcony area. I bet that would be lush on a summer evening!
We were absolutely spoiled for choice and struggled to whittle down what we wanted to order. I had the teriyaki tofu, artichoke wings, and delicata squash, and my partner had the "lamb" ragu and the szechuan fries. However, we had a little nibble of each other's food.
Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection! We decided we needed to come back and try more of the menu before our time in Chester was over. So we went again the following day!
This time, we shared the pumpkin tortellini (not pictured), tenderstem broccoli (not pictured), brussels sprouts, baby carrots, and potato terrine.
My partner and I were firm haters of sprouts in ALL forms, but we both thought they were one of the best dishes we had eaten over the last 2 days. My partner also isn't a fan of tofu usually, but that was also one of his favourites.
What I love about Shrub is their quality of ingredients and creativity. I love that they make veggies fun and the main event without the need for every dish having a protein/meat alternative, which is why it's no surprise that even non-vegans enjoy eating here so much.
The staff are all so lovely! On our first night, we were served by Eloise and Tim, who were both super sweet and welcoming. I am gutted that we didn't get the names of the people on our second night as they were fantastic, too. But the people working at 7.30pm on Wednesday 11th December 2024 deserve a shout-out too ❤️
Hopefully, we'll get to come back someday!

Shrub - Edit
Loved it here! This place is a bit special and I can’t wait to return. The food is creative, flavoursome and cooked really well. It’s small plates so it’s recommended to order a few per person, but they do have larger plates which are slightly bigger portions. I went for the pumpkin tortellini and the lemon posset for dessert, both mouthwateringly good. Next time I’d love to try the Sunday Roast. Voted best restaurant in Chester 2024, having visited I can understand why.

The food is amazing. 6 of us visited,1 vegan,1 vegetarian and 4 carnivores. A bit sceptical on what the others would think about not having animal 😩 with Sunday lunch but they loved it and no animals harmed 😄 We will be back

A Sunday lunch of dreams - Edit
We first had Sunday lunch at Shrub a couple of years ago, I've been dreaming of it since and finally got to return this Sunday. It was again absolutely top notch and with the addition of a Yorkshire pudding this time. I haven't had one of those for about 20 years! I only wish I lived closer, I'd be a regular.

Can’t wait to return! - Edit
Too much food to try and not enough time (or stomach space). Literally wanted everything. Partner and I shared about 7 plates for the main meal - the teriyaki tofu and artichokes were my favourite (the artichoke sauce was banging). Ate too much so had to share the apple gyoza for dessert - the ice cream was amazing, meant to ask where it was from but forgot. Great cocktail & wine list. Friendly staff and reasonably priced. Lovely setting - the balcony seating area looked especially nice.
