Amazing food, but ambience needs work - Edit
I love the food here. I do, but to be honest, I don't like going here. First, they don't the reservations. They are only open between 5pm and 10pm, so if you want to make sure that you get in, your party has to show up at 4:30 and stand outside, even in the rain, and if your entire at isn't there when they open, you wont be seated. If you show up at 5pm, you can get on the wait list which fills up really quickly. It's in the heart of the Mission, so you're likely going to be asked for money or other things while you stand and wait. There is no other option, but to just deal with it.
Read moreIf you're disabled and can't stand outside waiting, oh well, you're screwed. They will not open the door and let you sit down to wait.
The stress and uncertainty makes me not want to go there and definitely not invite other people who could be late and ruin your chance to get a table. And this applies every day of the week, its not just weekends.
Second, if you're lucky enough to get in and get a table, the seats are very uncomfortable. You might get a wooden bench or a hard chair, but if you're a 5th wheel, you'll get a hard wooden stool with no back. Again, not very disabled friendly.
Third, it's SO LOUD!!! Even the wait staff has a hard time hearing you when you order. The walls are all hard surfaces with no sound dampening, the music is blasting and people are packed in so the voices and other conversations batter you throughout the meal.
Like I said, the food is very good and there's nothing like it in the city. But all the stress of getting in, the uncomfortable seating, the loud atmosphere, plus how expensive it is for food that does not leave you feeling full unless you drop at least $100, just not worth going very often.
Pros: Very good different food
Cons: Expensive, Loud, hard seats, not good atmosphere, Not disabled-friendly

Simply the BEST - Edit
Best sushi I’ve ever had. Everything was so fresh and tasted so amazing. Was a line out the door even before it opened and I’m glad I decided to wait myself. Did not disappoint. Was just hear visiting but will certainly come back to this gem the next time I’m on the wear coast again. Plot switch, colonial pipe, avocado roll, surprised ending, beet salad and this lovely dessert with a chocolate brownie with green tea ice cream on top plus a tempura banana with two strawberries dipped in chocolate. All I can say is YUM!

It’s ok but not that good - Edit
The waiting system is a little weird. We have been waited for a long time. The sushi we ordered tasted salty! The service was “speed”. A little upset, honestly !

Incredible!! - Edit
I wish I had a bigger stomach! I’d love to try everything. The three rolls I had though were so so good. The specialty rolls are on the pricier side but 1000% worth it. 10/10 would recommend

Best sushi ever - Edit
I was a huge sushi fan and it was the hardest thing to give us. I have to say that Shizen has the best sushi, vegan or otherwise. It tasted so fresh and delicious. Their atmosphere and plating was beautiful. It makes me want to move to San Fransisco just for their food.

Ultimate date night. - Edit
Wow - what an incredible experience at Shizen. My wife and I take sushi seriously, and being WFPB, it’s challenging to find diverse options at typical sushi bars. Search no longer - Shizen delivered above and beyond our expectations. You know your meal is going to rule when your appetizer (garlic edamame) leaves you speechless. We ordered specialty rolls, all incredible, with the Surprise Ending winning for creativity - one roll is especially hot, and the chewer of said roll is treated to a sake shot because...why not? Our service was prompt and friendly, and the atmosphere was fresh and hip. Expensive, yes, but I believe worth the money.

This is easily the best Vegan place in SF. The food and atmosphere are amazing and it’s the perfect spot for all types of eaters. My carnivore friends love this place just as much as I do.

Food was delicious. We sat at the sushi bar so we got to ask what everything was and choose with our eyes. Chef was super nice and didn't mind us asking. Waited an hour on Sunday and was absolutely worth it.

Outstanding - Edit
Honestly, the best sushi around, vegan or otherwise. The food is outstanding but they are gonna make you wait for it. Unless you get here at opening, don't come hungry cause the wait is very long.

Awesome Food, Long Waitlist - Edit
I got to Shizen at 5:30pm on a Sunday evening as a party of one and still had to wait an hour to be seated. For me, traveling by myself with nothing else to do, the wait was totally worth it. The food was delicious and service very prompt. I had a wakame salad, gyoza, a boddy and soul specialty roll, and a hidden agenda specialty roll. All the food was delicious and fresh.
Read moreThey use a Yelp-based waitlist system which will text you when your table is almost ready, but then you've got five minutes to get there in person. So, while there are a couple cafes and such on nearby Valencia, someone needs to be ready at all times to high-tail it back there.
Pros: delicious, wide variety
Cons: waitlist

Worth the wait - Edit
I had heard about this place and it lived up to its reputation. It deserves five stars for taste, creativity and presentation. We liked Scarlet Smile but Boddy and Soul was even better and our favorite was called Hidden Agenda. I’ll be back the next time I’m in town. Even the omnivores who like traditional sushi thought this was pretty tasty. Miso soup and garlic edamame made good starters. Everything we saw looked fabulous and I wanted to try it all!

Good food - Edit
I went on a Sunday night and had a considerable waiting line. It was worth it, because the food was very delicious. I advise you to search for the dishes first, since the menu is quite large. Great experience, though a bit pricey. Nice food.
