Spoilt for choice

I was here with omni family and they all enjoyed the food! Some dishes were better than others, but it was nice to be able to eat as a local and not have to settle for something just because it's the only vegan option on the menu.

Pros: Typical Roman cuisine, Variety

Cons: Small space, No paper menus, only QR code

Best pasta of my life

Amazing selection of veganized traditional Italian dishes. Incredible pastas but also serves other second courses that looked fantastic, although we were too full from our pasta first courses to try them. Definitely coming back as soon as possible!

Pros: Freundliches Personal, Vorspeise Tagliere vegan

Cons: Geschmack der Hauptspeisen

Nice Reservation Only Restaurant

I have come here twice. The first time, I didn't get in because I didn't have a reservation. This is a small, busy place, very popular in Rome. I loved the wide variety of vegan options on the menu. The starter (Sofficini vegan alla pizzaiola) was tasty. I expected a great lasagna, but was a bit underwhelmed by it: it was incredibly hot, and the dough was a bit hard to chew. The sauce and the cheese were okay, though. This was my first time trying a vegan Panna cotta. I expected it to be sweeter. I liked the consistency and the sauce. As I have never tried the regular Panna cotta, nor any other vegan one, I'm not sure if I'm being fair here (maybe this is just how it's supposed to be). Would definitely come back to try other things on the massive menu.

Pros: Well rounded eating experience, Excellent menu, Fantastic service

Cons: Reservation only, Cramped indoor space

Amazing food

I think ‘like’ is an understatement. Everything was delicious. Even my non-vegan family loved it. Especially the zucchini lasagna was tasty and the cannelloni as well. I wish I tried their tiramisu, but will next time I’m in this beautiful city.

Pros: Zucchini lasagna , Cannelloni, Pizza and the arancini

Perplessa

Cons: Servizio lento e trascurato

Incredible menu. Excellent food. Pasta portions are huge — a full meal by themselves. Nice, friendly staff. Make reservations; the wait for walk ins can be long.

Traditional italian vegan food

Tolles Restaurant, welches klassische italienische Speisen in vegan anbietet.
Unbedingt vorher reservieren. Das Restaurant ist sehr beliebt 😊

Pros: Große Auswahl

Great Food and very accommodating!

Went here with a big group (18 people) and only I am vegan and one other has dairy/egg allergies but everyone was blown away by the food. The appetizers and desserts were the best food I had in all of Rome. I ordered the carbonara to try and I would avoid it - but the cannelloni is amazing. Make sure to get the aronchini it was delicious. The service was fast and fine as I said it was a big group of us.

Pros: Amazing food

Good food, bad service

The food here was lovely both me and my boyfriend (who isn’t vegan) really enjoyed it. However the service really lets it down, we reserved a table for 8:30 and we got there a few minutes early and we’re asked if we have a reservation so we gave them the name and they said it wasn’t on the system so asked to see the confirmation email which we showed so they just told us to wait outside. We were sat down maybe 15/20 mins later, the service was quick but when the waiter asked what drinks he could get us we ordered two drinks off the menu and some tap water (which other restraunts have been happy to give us) but he just smirked and didn’t give us any. When the food came they would just put it on the table without saying anything. Overall we enjoyed the food it’s just a shame the service lets it down so much.

Pros: Fully vegan menu, Nice food

Cons: Bad service, Refused tap water

Best Italian food I've ever had

This is a perfect place to taste the true Italian cuisine while keeping it 100% vegan. It blew my mind of how good the food was. I want to return to Roma just to come to eat here again. The staff was really nice too

Disappointing food and service

We were really excited to try Rifugio Romano after hearing all the great reviews on here, so we came on our first night in Rome. Unfortunately, we were pretty disappointed in both the service and food. First of all, the service was really lacking. It was a really hot night in the Italian heat wave, so I don’t blame the waiters for being tired and maybe a bit sloppy when working in the heat. However, we felt like we were a burden to the waiters and didn’t feel welcome at all. At every other vegan restaurant we’ve been to, the waiters have been very welcoming and the restaurants have all had a very unique feeling and atmosphere to them. Rifugio Romano felt like a very “touristy” place, with rude waiters and none of the “vegan charm” as other places have.

The food was also pretty disappointing. We had arancini, the carbonara and the mezzamanica. The arancini were good, but the carbonara and the mezzamanica were not. They were not very smooth, especially the carbonara which felt very grainy. We couldn’t finish our plates because of the taste and how heavy they felt when eating them.

We wish we had a better experience, but we felt as if it was very overrated. We’ve had way better vegan pasta on our 1,5 week Italy trip.

Pros: Fully vegan place

Cons: Bad service , Bad vibes , Overrated food

So good!

Make sure you make a reservation or it can be tricky to get in as it’s super small! Was so impressed to have real Roman/Italian food! The carbonara was unreal and so was everything else I tried! I made lunch resos the last day so I could try more things too.

110% worth the hype

So we got 4 dishes - cannelloni, Bomba pizza, pollo chicken, and another pasta dish (but I can’t remember its name). We also had a few entrees - suppli, bruschetta and the focaccia. The staff were all fantastic with very fast service. Just make sure you book because you will get turned away if you just turn up - they’re so popular!

My absolute stand out dish was the pasta that I can’t remember the name of but it had huge tubes of pasta with a tomato sauce and crispy seitan on top.

Overrated

Whilst it’s lovely to support a fully vegan restaurant, I feel like this place is just expecting the hype to keep them going. I’m obviously appreciative that I could have anything from the menu, but everything I had fell flat.

To start, my husband and I shared the croquettes and the mushroom bruschetta. The croquettes were nice but the sauce was very bland. The mushroom bruschetta tasted like the mushrooms on toast that I make at home anyway, because the ‘Gorgonzola’ tasted just like a mellow cream cheese. I was really hoping for the blue cheese tang which I just didn’t get.

For main my husband had the mezzamanica alla gricia vegan and I had the carbonara. Neither of the sauces were particularly creamy, more like when you make a cashew cream in a blender that isn’t powerful enough. The mezzamanica was decently seasoned and very smoky, but lukewarm. The carbonara stank of egg. If I knew ordinary carbonara doesn’t actually smell of egg, I’d have been suspicious. They were both decent enough meals, but underwhelming compared to the hype. The portions are also huge! I was looking forward to a tiramisu for dessert but I couldn’t eat anymore.

It took ages for a drinks order to be taken, and then it was never brought over. It wasn’t until our starters arrived that they realised we didn’t have our drinks. When they did bring them over, we had to remind them we’d also asked for water. That’s particularly strange to me as normally places ask if you want water as soon as you sit down and it’s there whilst you peruse the menu.

We then got our main. Except they brought us the wrong dish. Not the end of the world but just annoying because the service was already lacking. When we finished the woman who collected the plates was so sloppy that I’m surprised it didn’t end up in my lap. They they took ages to bring the bill as the three waiters decided to have a chinwag instead of attending to us.

The menu is completely online which isn’t my favourite when I’m having to click through each menu item to see what the individual dishes contain. Some don’t even have descriptions so it’s anybody’s guess as to what they actually contain.

If you want a quiet dinner, I don’t recommend sitting outside. Buskers are loud, lots of backpackers walking by, and very drunk people getting in the way on the waiters. Do yourself a favour and book inside the restaurant.

Pros: Fully vegan, Central location, Reasonable price

Cons: Sloppy service, Slow service

Didn't live up to the hype

We went here for dinner on the same night we arrived in Rome, as it was one of the nearest to our hotel and I had listed it as a top priority. Unfortunately, I didn't love it. The menu is extensive, and I wish there was a physical copy as I find that much easier to peruse.
For appetisers we got the classic tomato bruschetta, and the bruschetta with mushroom and blue cheese. The waiter had told us the blue cheese tastes exactly like the real stuff, luckily for me it tasted nothing like blue cheese (as I detest that flavour), but more like cream cheese. There wasn't much taste at all, neither did the tomato bruschetta have much taste which is a crying shame because good tomatoes in Italy are so flavoursome.
The mini fried foldover with pizzaiolo sauce had quite a thick breadcrumb/polenta type pastry, but again, hardly any flavour in the sauce.
For mains we got the spaghetti carbonara, and pizza diavolo. The table near us were eating their cacio e pepe and said it was amazing but the carbonara was even better. When it came, I was impressed how eggy it smelt and tasted, but that didn't last long, and the bacon had a jerky texture.
The diavolo pizza (tomato, mozzarella, salami, chilli, mozzarella cream) description had me worried about the spice level, but I forgot that things in Italy aren't really very spicy. It was ok, the crust was nice and airy and crusty, but overall I found it quite doughy and not crisp (maybe from all the cheese) and the salami was of a sausage texture.
For dessert we shared the tiramisu, and it was ok. The biscuit texture was a bit on the al dente side, and there was flavour there, but not exactly coffee or alcohol.
I'm so glad people are loving this vegan restaurant though, it was very busy when we were there, but for me, I didn't.
