Ok meal in Kyoto

Very busy little bar in busy area of Kyoto
We'd been spoilt in Tokyo with food and great atmosphere so this place didn't really compare
It was packed, mostly with tourists, there were vegan options, tofu salads and vegan tempura
My meal was pretty bland by the standards we'd had at previous places - but it was still decent
My partner however loved his chicken
Staff were friendly but just a bit rushed off their feet

Pros: Choices , Friendly staff

Cons: Crowded , Bland food

Great variety

I went there with a few friends and got to try a lot of different (seemingly) vegan foods.
They've got a great variety for everyone and everything is made on order.
The atmosphere is very relaxed and you can get seats at the counter or at an table overlooking the Kamogawa.
We were seated at the counter and could see how they prepared the dishes. It was interesting until we saw how they took the frozen fish out of the plastic bag and directed put it into a glass of hot water to defrost it. After they took that out of the water and put it into the tempura (one bowl for everything)to fry they put other frozen seafood into the same water aswell...

The staff were friendly and the location is good.

Tell the staff that you are vegan when ordering and specify what things you can not eat!

Pros: Great variety, Something for everyone

Cons: Not many properly vegan options

Many fantastic options

Had many options as a vegetarian. I would consider most of them as vegan, but I am not sure whether they use the same oil for meat and vegetables. Highly recommend the Deep fried tofu (Tofu agedashi). It’s ridiculously soft and melts on your mouth.

Would eat here again.

Pros: Deep fried tofu, Grilled Eggplant, Grilled Shitake Mushrooms

Great

Seconding everything that HattieWindley said.

It's a small place but there was room for them to seat us right away on a Sunday night too. The restaurant closed at 9:30pm with last orders at 9pm.

We ordered from the set menu which is set up for sharing, and added a few extra items too. Items are delivered from the kitchen whenever they're ready, which is not necessarily in the order that they're listed on the menu.

We were seated at a table at the back away from all of the cooking, and it has a nice view out over the river. They also have meat/fish options on the menu which is handy if (like me) you're eating with a meat-eater. Payment is cash only.

Tasty Vegan options on Pontocho Alley

Managed to get seated here on a busy Sunday night after trying to get into a few other places. There's a 300 yen seat charge but we got given edamame beans as part of this. There is also a set menu which I believe you can order all vegan/veggie options.

We opted to order lots of different veggie options - we got grilled eggplant with miso sauce, assorted vegetable tempura, namafu tempura and pumpkin croquettes. All of them were delicious!! It was our first time trying namafu and it was nicer than I expected from Google's description.

Some of the tofu dishes weren't vegan or veggie as they had bonito or dashi (Japanese fish broth) so watch out for that!

Pros: Tempura vegetables were delightful , Location is excellent , Authentic izakaya vibes

Cons: Serves both meat and fish, If sat at the bar you see / smell meat grilled, Some tofu dishes contain fish
