Great vegan food - Edit
Always on the lookout for purely vegetarian or vegan restaurants we were happy to find Mother Chu’s. The restaurant was quite full so service was a bit slow but the food compensated for our wait. The menu is extensive so we asked our waitress for help in deciding and were happy with the choices

Top quality Asian food, unusual dishes - Edit
All vegan except for honey. Very hard to choose between so many options! We had the stir fried crispy Seitan and sizzling lotus root. The Seitan was sweet and sour and crispy, just as it should be. The lotus root had a sweet stuffing (maybe Pumpkin?) and a basil sauce. It was a really interesting flavour combination that I haven't seen before and very much enjoyed it. They also brought out a complimentary appetiser of a fruity, nutty bar which had a bit of a kick and was a great start to the meal.

Our kids always love Asian food-the noodles were amazing and we enjoyed the fried gluten dish. This was a cozy spot with lots of seating. It was very busy at lunchtime.

Comfort food - Edit
Service was friendly but expect to wait more than 30-40 mins for food to arrive (during rush dinner hours). The wanton noodle soup, miso tofu and crispy soya bean roll were delicious but the char siu (pork) bun was just average.

Lovely little kitchen! - Edit
I was accommodated with a table in this little restaurant even though it was packed with people. I had an entree, soup and rice for $20 and I was very satisfied. The hope would be that they remove honey as an ingredient to make it fully vegan.

Shoo Honey - Edit
This place is claims to be all vegan, except for items that list honey. I can respect that and their range is wide enough that it doesn't really restrict your range. Found myself picking the most interestingly named items and was impressed with everything.
Read moreThe staff were kind of rude in an amusing way, and would shoo you around the restaurant or wave you away if you got up to pay at an inauspicious time. Not a bad thing, just quirky.
Pros: Great range, Reasonable price
Cons: Honey, Terse

Excellent and unique food - Edit
I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here, I got a steamed bun, the stuffed eggplant and the summer bun for dessert as well as green tea and all of that only cost $40. I had never had anything like the eggplant or the dessert before and both were delicious. The waitstaff were lovely and attentive despite the restaurant being very busy. I will definitely be back

Delicious - with an occasional miss - Edit
We tried both eat in and delivery - our verdict: mostly delicious.
Read moreThere are soooo many things on the menu that it was difficult to choose…from what we ordered, the best dishes were:
- Crispy gluten with tangy miso sauce - classic, can’t-miss dish if you love fake meat
- Gai Lan / Chinese broccoli - perfectly cooked, deliciously flavoured
- French beans with soy slices - succulent beans and great flavour
Ones we wouldn’t order again:
- Gluten stir fried with snow peas and black bean sauce
- Soya bean rolls with black bean sauce - didn’t love the (fishy) flavor or texture
Would definitely go back to try some of the other things we missed though!!

New Favourite Restaurant - Edit
My husband and I just happened to drive past and decided to go in for dinner. We got in an hour before closing and expected them to turn us away because they were so busy but they sat as down and gave us exceptional service. We did have to wait a while for food but it was absolutely worth it and I was with great company so I didn’t mind at all. The food was delicious and tasted exactly how I remember Chinese food tasting since before going vegan. We will without doubt eat here every time we are in Sydney!

Update: Sept 2022 Still good! Fresh interesting food! - Edit
A friend recommended this place to me when I was in Sydney. I would highly recommend it myself! We ordered a few dishes to share, an entree platter: which had a number of sample items. All of them very tasty and leaving me wanting more. I resisted as the mains came along shortly after. The tamerind curry is something I miss now, (back in Melbourne). It was rich, but not too rich, spicy, and nicely blended flavours. Went back the next day and ordered it again! The ambience is simply relaxed, and the service was also good. Will be going back when in Sydney again.

Meh - Edit
Ordered takeout: steamed dim sum(7AUD for 3), crispy tofu(20AUD), and cashew fried rice(15AUD).
Read moreDim sum is a let down, the filling is mushy, they must have used food processor instead of mincing by hand.
When I’m paying 20 bucks for a dish, I have certain expectation to its portion and its taste, especially for weekday lunch. They use small boxes for main course, and small soup container for dim sum. Their takeout menu calls appetizer “entree”.
The “special sauce” in crispy tofu isn’t anything special, it’s really 榨菜(pickled veggie) mixed with soya sauce. What makes crispy tofu even less appetizing is their obsession with coriander. Don’t they know that it tastes like soap to certain people? Why not use a more inclusive plant?
Fried rice uses frozen pea&corn&carrot.
Even if they use fresh pea&corn&carrot, the portion is laughable at this price. I’d happily accept 8 dollars for what it is, but at double the price? Ridiculous. Daylight robbery. Now come to think about the nuts, I wouldn’t be surprised if they used store bought roasted cashew and just add them last minute.

I've been popping in here regularly on my visits to Sydney since the mid 1980s. Great location, menu, food and service. You don't thrive across 4 decades without doing everything right. This time I tried the mushroom rissoles in a clay pot. Always love this place! Delicious!

Good option - Edit
I hadn't eaten here for a very long time, and remembered the food as being a bit bland. Being in the city early one evening I decided to try it again as there aren't any other vegetarian options around there. The food was really good. I ordered a main off their specials page, it was vegetables with walnuts & cashews. Also had plain brown rice and a nice ginger tea. Service was fast & friendly. The place was moderately busy (just after opening time) and everyone seemed to be enjoying their meals. Will go again for sure when I'm in the area.

Extremely Disappointed - Edit
We were told we could only get takeaway and it took nearly an hour for a couple of dishes. She charged me more than i was supposed to be charged, the portion size was tiny and the food was standard nothing special. Not worth the money or the wait. I would give it only 1 star but the app won’t allow me.
