Top tier - Edit
Food was excellent! We got the vermicelli, the Korean pancakes, a spicy tofu soup, and a creamy tofu dish and loved it all. The black sesame cake for dessert was also very good!!

Nice ambiance and flavors - Edit
Beautiful restaurant in the heart of Koreatown. Most of the seating is traditional (on mats with a footwell). You will be asked to remove your shoes, so come prepared. (They offer slippers to use in the bathrooms.)
Read moreThe food is great. A wide array of flavors with adjustable spice levels. We got the acorn noodle salad (excellent avo fritter topping), veg dumplings, kimchi dolsot bibimbap, and kimbap. Taking off a star because the dumplings were a bit too plain, and most of the food had virtually no spice unless it was marked as spicy. But still good!

Delight - Edit
The floor seating is actually the floor (with cushions), and the establishment is shoe free - both things I enjoyed. We tried the pancake platter, and the spicy tofu. Both were great. I especially enjoyed the sauce on both.

Not good Korean food - Edit
We are a Korean family and the food was not good. Too sweet, not spiced enough, odd flavours. The kimchi was fine but it was normal not special food sold at ridiculous prices for tourists who don’t know better.

I’ve never been to the temple in Korea but I’ve been to this spot every year during Christmas, because it’s a very comfortable environment, they have a lot of decorations is from the temple, I truly like this place, I don’t have to afraid of cross contamination here, I understand their price is pretty high but I also aware that the temple in Asia is not a place that everyone can access in, so I’m very appreciated for this temple willing to accept people dine in, and I truly like their taking off shoes rules because none of the restaurants in United States follow that traditional anymore, Everytime I came this place I feel like I came home because my mom’s house rules is also taking off your shoes first ! No dirty shoes walking around the whole house !

I’m not sure about your gender but when I was a child, in Asia a female is not allowed to enter the temple if we are having our period because we female with period is considered as dirty, I’ve been following that rules that I will never go to the temple if I’m having my periods to show the respect to the Buddha. I hope you understand this is not just a regular vegan restaurant, This is a temple, and many many people respect and love this place

Nice experience - Edit
I made reservations for this restaurant and unfortunately booked a table instead of floor seating. We were seated and began perusing the menu. There are a lot of things to choose from. We ordered the cauliflower, Korean pancake platter, kochi skewers, crispy mushrooms, and the bulgogi stone bowl.
Read moreIn my opinion, a couple of the dishes lacked flavor. The cauliflower and the crispy mushrooms to be exacted. Everything else I enjoyed. Really enjoyed the stone bowl and pancake platter. Customer service was top notch and I would not hesitate to visit here again.

I could move to NYC just for this! - Edit
Hands down the best vegan Korean food I’ve ever had. The bibimbap tastes so fresh and flavorful, the Korean pancakes are out of this world, and the matcha lattes are perfectly balanced (they are nothing like the super sweet watered down matchas I’m used to).

Just… WOW! - Edit
HanGawi was our first restaurant visit during our trip to New York. Wow. We knew right away that this would be hard to beat. The food was exceptionally delicious, especially the Korean pancakes were a hit! The atmosphere was cozy and in such a busy city as New York you could really relax here. Highly recommended!

Meh - Edit
I don’t understand the hype about this place. Sure the rooms pretty and feels like you’re in Korea with lovely deco but the food is average at best, service slow, like really really slow - waited an hour for mains/entrees and when it did arrive was underwhelming and not very interesting. The tofu had raw chilli paste on it and was very unpleasant. The mushrooms were nice but not worth the time or money.

this was my first time eating at a michelin restaurant and oh boy did it not disappoint. starting off with our drinks, they were SO TASTY (but $18 oof). we ordered 3 appetizers to share. the cauliflower bites were AMAZINGGG and i loved the spicy creamy sauce they came with. the mushroom fritters were to die for. my bf hates mushrooms and this was his fav thing he got ??? the korean pancakes were fine in our opinion. i love when restaurants take on cultural norms and this one had us take off our shoes and sit on mats. yay!

Deeply charming and worth the trip. - Edit
The atmosphere and attitude of the place is something not often found in vegan restaurants. They make you feel as if they are honored to have you, and that every bite was prepared with strict attention to detail. We had the seasonal tasting menu and would recommend to anyone. Be prepared to take off your shoes before entering and to sit in a faux floor sat style (booths are built into the ground as most Americans probably would feel put out to actually sit on the floor in the traditional manner).

Traditional Vegan Korean Restaurant - Edit
Very nice atmosphere, tables low to the ground like traditional korean restaurants. Food really solid. Would recommend it if you are craving Korean vegan food (which can be hard to find). There is also Franchia, sister restaurant nearby.

Menu & Venue a Charm - Edit
My 2 non-vegan, non-vegetarian friends enjoyed the meal and menu as much as I did! There was even a vegan menu specifically excluding onions and I was thrilled. Service was exceptional, the lichee mojitos delicious, even our table that didn’t require shoe removal was nice. What a treat!
