This place is wonderful! Great service. Our server explained all of their homemade sauces and food options. The menu clearly displayed vegan and gluten-free options. Everything we ordered was delicious! They also have great drinks. We loved sitting on the gorgeous patio. Definitely recommend checking it out if you're in the area.

Best restaurant in San José - Edit
We were fortunate enough to find Cafe Rojo on our first night in San José, and we returned day after day over our eight day stay . The food is THAT good!! So is the service, the warm atmosphere, and the delectable desserts. My personal favorites are is the ginger coffee and the Chilean Torte. Two of the best flavors I’ve ever discovered. Fantástico!!

Large old Spanish colonial building, simple, clean food options. If you like ginger, try the Agua de sapo. ("Toad water" drink which is a traditional recipe from the Caribbean coast)

We were delighted that this restaurant offered veg and vegan options. The food was delicious. They were very cognizant of veg vs vegan and ensured they asked about this while we ordered. Our first language is English, but we speak Spanish. The staff confirmed the order in both languages so a) we could practice and b) so they got it correct.

Vegan food is clearly labelled on the menu, and there is only one sauce that is non-vegan in the tray they bring - also labelled clearly plus the waitress told me which to avoid too. The food was really tasty, shiitake mushrooms were scrumptious 😋 they also had a vegan red wine!! Such a treat. Reasonably priced too. Oh and the chocolate cake is amazing!

This place is amazing. The food is delicious, great atmosphere, and the staff are awesome (especially Daniel!). We came here three times in three days because we knew the food was awesome and there were tons of vegan options. Highly recommend their take on a casado, bun noodles, and the vegan chocolate cake. The cocktails are also excellent and the price is great for the quality. Also, the staff speak Spanish and English and will willingly speak both / help you with your Spanish if you’d like!

I am not sure what just happened, but the eggplant on sourdough chased by a wedge of vegan chocolate cake filled me with joy. A peak experience for this herbivore.

Fast-casual cafe with a great little setting. The bun noodle bowls were tasty with two vegan topping options (eggplant mushrooms) and a vegan nuoc cham sauce. Portions were large and they have Vichy Catalan sparkling water. Yum!

I had a bun Café Rojo, they also serve salad, banh mi and casado. Each table gets a set of sauces to flavour to their needs, with four of five being vegan and all clearly labelled. Food is fresh and delicious, staff is nice and the place is nicely decorated with a relaxed vibe.
