Good variety

All items labelled with allergens and whether vegan/vegetarian. Good selection for vegans, I had vegan focaccia and a vegan cake, both very nice.

Pros: Clearly labeled , Good choice , Clean

Cons: Bit canteen'ish, not a cosy cafe vibe

Good sweet & savoury vegan bakery options

Came late in the morning (11.30am) for a breakfast after a night of aurora chasing. Very well labelled vegan, vegetarian & allergen options. Sold out of a lot of things but were baking some more. Sweet options were Apple or Cherry turnover, Cronuts & Rice Cakes. Savoury was a Falafel baguette which they made fresh for us because they had sold out, a potato or spinach Borsek and a vegetable focaccia.

Has a selection of fresh juices. Coffee machine. Only tea was a herbal tea unfortunately. Also bottles of soda.

Large seating area but very popular so may struggle to get a seat.

Absolutely delicious

This cafe bakery has such a warm atmosphere and some of the best vegan pastries I’ve ever had. I went for an apple pastry and savory pastry twist. Vegan and vegetarian are clearly labeled.

Pros: Welcoming atmosphere, Delicious pastries

Nice selection of vegan options

There was a nice selection of vegan options, both sweet and savoury. Coffee was a bit disappointing, came from machines with no vegan options. But they offered oat milk to add to an anericano.

Life saver in Tromso!

I loved that the vegan options are clearly labelled, unlike many places in Norway where vegetarian and vegan seem interchangeable. They had spinach or potato borek, apple turnover & a sour cherry ‘crumble cake’ but my favourite was the cronuts! Also 2 huge vegan baguettes with vegan mayo/sauce, schnitzel or falafel. Picked up breakfast here everyday and take away for various trips that I knew wouldn’t have a vegan option. #Veganuary

Pros: Great choice, Clear labelling , Good value

Cons: No oat milk for tea

Café self service

En plein centre ville c'est plutôt sympa de s'y arrêter pour prendre un cronut ou autre. Quelques pâtisseries veganes mais rien de transcendant

Pros: Pratique , Peu onéreux

Cons: Très industriel

Quite good if you like bread/pastries

Depending on time of day depends on choices available
They did have a vegan cronut I've never seen one before!

Nice vegan selection

Good selection of vegan savoury & sweet pastries.

Oatly Barista available for coffee on request at the till when paying.

If you’re in footwear with ice spikes - remove them at the door, as very slippery floor is accident risk.

Pros: More choice than most places, Quick service, Seating available

Cons: Lingonberry pastry too tart, Some items sell out early , No vegan vanilla/custard pastry available

A life-saver

This place is a life-saver for a vegan tourist in Tromsø, since there really aren’t other fast casual vegan options, at least that we found. We got the vegan boreks some 5 times over the course of not that many days! Super delicious, wallet-friendly, and open relatively wide hours compared to most places. We went to several other Backstubes in Oslo and airports, but leaving the review for this one since we went to it the most.

We ate here every day!

Lovely bakery with so many veggie options, all clearly labelled. Tromsø is not a cheap place but this was the cheapest food we had whilst here hence why we went every day. Despite the more reasonable prices everything we tried was delicious. A good range of pastries and sandwiches some of which they can make vegan for you. Highly recommend if you are in the area

Just perfect

This was the most perfect little spot for us for breakfast, coffees and snacks. So glad we went here early on during our trip as we found options in Norway a little limited. A really nice place, lovely staff and definitely great food!

So many bread options as well as a quite few pastries, sweet options and juices. Chai pudding was brilliant for breakfast. Oat milk it available at the counter if you get a filter coffee.

We went EVERY day and I wish the equivalent was in England!!

Pros: Amazing food, lots of choice, Great value for money, Lovely little bakery to sit in

Loads of options

Lots of very well labelled vegan options, which changed daily. I enjoyed 3 different types of borek, cronut, apple turnover, berry turnover, berry cake, apple danish… etc.
You take your own tongs at the start of the queue, select what you want with your tongs as you go, then drop the used tongs at the till when you pay.

Pros: Lots of options, Clearly marked, No cross contamination with tongs

Surprisingly affordable and a good choice for vegans

Norway isn't easy for vegans, so I appreciate this bakery having some options for us. They have two types of pastries: spinach and potato, and for sweets, the cronut is vegan plus on the day I went they had a danish looking pastry topped with lingonberries. I also got a focaccia slice (no cheese). Would love to see some sandwich options because eating more than one pastry doesn't sit well in my stomach. Other than that, it's great to have options and they are actually very reasonably priced! ($2-4 per item)

You can find Backstube in the Oslo airport too which provides a much more affordable option compared to a €20 salad!

Has many plant-based options

Backstube should really get kudos (a.k.a respect) for providing many vegan and vegetarian options when other bakeries did not do so... maybe others have followed?

The spinach and potato böreks are nice, and I like the sweet pastries. Also have relatively good big breads.

I find often that backstube Tromsø is often out of the vegan sandwiches - often just ham&cheese sandwiches left. That is a minus.

Pros: Good potato böreks, sweet pastry and bretzels., Relatively cheap, Many vegetarian and vegan options

Cons: Often out of vegan sandwiches, Not the most cozy place

Surprising find

Really nice wee self service bakery. Load up your tray with a wide selection of vegan baked goods and some savoury focaccias or sandwiches and grab a coffee and lunch is sorted. Comfy couches at the back and quite affordable too (at least at current exchange rate from the UK).

Pros: Wide choice, Tasty pastries

Cheap place to get some snacks

They have surprisingly many vegan pastries for a good price, nothing special though.
If you are hungry and want a quick snack, I recommend this place. However, it's not exactly a cozy café rather a bakery in fast-food fashion with a fast customer turn-over.

Pros: quite a few vegan options, relatively cheap

Cons: not a cozy atmosphere
