perfection

As a vegan this is everything you could ever want. We got the compost plate (vegan version of the famous Rochester garbage plate), grilled cheese, quesadilla, flat bread, and crab cakes. So amazing that we got quite a few desserts to go. I highly recommend!

Hands down best vegan in rochester

I've been obsessed with the Red Fern since I went vegan about four years ago - I can't believe I haven't put up a review on HappyCow yet! It's a cute little restaurant tucked away on Park street, and a go-to for a lot of the veg community in the area.

The food is delicious - sandwiches and entrees that can will satisfy vegan and omnivore alike. I'd describe it as healthy comfort/american food. I think I've had the entire menu by now and have never been disappointed. The compost plate is a healthier take on a Rochester tradition, and whatever they put in their "meat sauce", it is addicting! To top it off, they always have amazing weekly and brunch specials, and delicious desserts that I can never leave without. My personal favorites on the standard menu are the steak bomber, the compost plate, loaded mac and cheese nachos, and the buddha bowl.

They also have many different allergen-free menus, including gluten-free, soy-free, and nut free menus. I'm able to take people with a variety of restrictions here and they always have a lot of options!

It's a small space, especially when they lose the outdoor seating during the winter, so they get packed easily. Would recommend making a reservation unless you're willing to wait, or going at an off time.

100% Satisfied

Easily my favorite restaurant, ever. It's so refreshing to be able to order anything on the menu and know that it is going to be both vegan and amazing. Thank you, Red Fern, for being so great!

Best Vegan Restaurant in Rochester

What an amazing place. We are so lucky to have Red Fern in Rochester. Great vegan sandwiches and dinners. From the "Compost Plate" (a vegan take-off of the classic Rochester garbage plate) to Buddha Bowls to Mac and Cheez to Lentil Burger to the ever popular Steak Bomb.

And the desserts are in the front case to tempt you on e way in and delay you on the way out.

Thanks to Andrea and her crew for creating a warm and wonderful vegan restaurant here in Rochester.

Pros: It's all vegan!, Interesting specials, Great menu

Cons: Not always enough seating for hungry vegans

Red Fern in Rochester NY, May 2017

This was a new restaurant visit for my son and his girlfriend who live in Rochester and are vegetarian; I am vegan & gluten-free and was visiting him. Red Fern was by far the favorite of all of us because of the large menu selection, the outdoor seating, satisfying portions, and the friendly and attentive staff. Highly recommended.

Pros: Large menu with options for all kinds of tastes, Gluten-free options available, Outdoor seating available and recommended

Cons: Small indoor seating area

Love this place

I love this place. As a vegan with a garlic intolerance, it is hard for me to find places to eat. They have menus for garlic free dishes and for gluten free options. The desserts are divine. I have eaten there several times, and every time it has been outstanding.

Pros: Scrumptious desserts, special menus for gluten free and garlic free , tasty food

Cons: small place - not much seating

Cakes are Amazing

The desserts here are amazing. It's worth it just to go for that.

I have only had the meals a few times here so I cannot comment too much on that. I have not found anything I liked the taste of for the food part so far. Will have to try more dishes in the future.

delicious and unique!

I loved this place! Got a fresh juice, Buddha bowl and zucchini noodle salad with tempeh bacon on top and everything was delicious! They also had desserts but I was too full to get any. Will definitely be returning.

Pros: lots of options

My go-to Vegan Restaurant

This is my absolute favorite place to go. Their compost plate is incredible- i enjoy it with the seitan, lentil burger or lemon tofu. The steak bomb is amazing, mac n cheese nachos, buddha bowl, buffalo bleu + quesadilla, for dessert: mint chocolate oreo cake and eat me ice cream!

It can be a little pricey, but its worth it!

Pros: Delicious Food, All Vegan Establishment, Friendly Staff

Cons: Can be pricey

Very relaxing, hip, casual atmosphere

I had the Buddha Bowl (seitan steak rather than tofu) and a dessert from their fully stocked dessert case. The food was wonderful, the service was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and veg lifestyle, and they didn't mind me squatting to work on my laptop for a spell either.
Soups, salads, sandwiches, smoothies, juices, and a large selection of desserts (cakes, cookies, bars, cupcakes, and more).
Would highly recommend!

Pros: Great tasting food , So many options, Very friendly staff

you had me at Mac and cheese nachos

I was recently in Rochester working a 48 hour trade show, and I ate at the Red Fern twice in that time. Before my trip, I was looking up vegan dining options and as soon as I saw Mac and cheese nachos on the menu, it was game over. They were delicious... the Mac and cheese could have been a little cheesier, but this is coming from a former cheese addict so I say that about everything. I came two days later for a quick breakfast before heading home, and enjoyed their brunch menu selections as well. Keep it up, guys!!

Amazing Food

My husband and I frequent this place. It's the only All Vegan place in Rochester and we love it! I have tried tons of different dishes on the menu and I haven't been disappointed yet! If unsure, get the Buddha Bowl! They also have tons of Gluten Free options, the staff is very knowledgeable and will prepare your meal in a Celiac Safe space! The servers are super nice and accommodating. The pastries are great too!

Pros: knowledgeable staff, delicious, cozy

Cons: no off-street parking, small

Excellent place.

Very delicious cuisine, tasty juices and smoothies, wonderful deserts. The staff was friendly and provided attentive and prompt service. The menu had a decent selection for a cafe with a dozen tables. They had soup and specials also and a desert case with 20 or so options. I ate two three course meals here and loved all of it. I am picky, so this says a lot. The bread with the soup was great and the bread with the faux steak bomb was even better.

Pros: All vegan local organic. Reasonabley priced.

whaaaaaat!

Decided to go to The Red Fern yesterday after class and it absolutely made my day. On the specials board (meaning they do not always serve it) there was a Buddha bowl. I have seen them online (it is basically a nicely arranged bowl of deliciousness) and I ordered it without even looking at the ingredients. It was AMAZING! I am not a fan of tofu but they made the greatest I have ever tasted, I was freaking out while eating it I could not believe how good it was. There was sautéed kale and cooked beets with rice and a sauce and the combination of everything together was perfect. I don't know if it is the same every time but I would definitely recommend trying it out! I have tried other things on the menu and the BLT is my favorite. I am not a fan of everything I have had but when you find something good it is wonderful!

A dissapointment

I was looking forward to going to The Red Fern, given great reviews and interesting menu. Unfortunately, I found their food very disappointing. In fact their famous 'compost plate' might have been one of my worst meals I ever had in a restaurant.

Why so bad? Well, their tempeh was extremely salty and I could not eat much of it. The mashed sweet potato was served cold (I know it was labeled as 'salad' but I really don't get why sweet potato would be served that way). I did not like the celeriac pieces in it. The pasta was over-boiled and generally lacking flavour. I went back to try their dessert selection, but the cookie was mediocre and far from being redeeming. I know that a lot of people like this place but I simply can't figure out why..was I unlucky? Was the chef having a bad day? In general I would suggest visiting other places in Rochester instead, namely Vive or The Owl House.

Pros: good service, nice location, big portions

Cons: the food isn't good

Lovely vegan resto

I really enjoyed my meal here. Came with some omni friends and they enjoyed their meals, too. The compost plate was a great way to sample a few dishes and the meat sauce was great. Lots of desserts to pick from as well, so make sure to save some space.

Local favorite

This place is the ultimate comfort vegan food destination. My favorite thing on the menu is the tofu "egg" sandwich. It has tomatoes, vegan mayo, greens, tofu that tastes uncannily like scrambled eggs, and the bread is amazing. I also stop here sometimes for dessert or a smoothie. This is a great place if you're transitioning to veganism and need mock meats and cheeses to help you acclimate. The only somewhat negative thing I'd say about this place is that the menu does rely pretty heavily on tofu, seitan, mock cheese, etc., so if you're not into that stuff, you're gonna have a hard time.

Pros: Great comfort food, Friendly service, Cute atmosphere

Cons: Not many non-tofu/seitan/fake cheese ops

Average

This is the third time I have been to red fern. I keep giving it a try because I hope for a more positive experience, but it just hasn't happened. First off, every time I have gone there I have been told what they are out of before I ordered. Like today when I ordered my sandwich, they didn't have focaccia bread. So my sandwich came out with so very average sandwich bread. And it bugs me that the sides have up charges. The sandwich with a "mashed/puréed sweet potato" side came to $13.50.

I appreciate an all vegan establishment, I really do, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything Someone couldn't just make at home for a lot less money. For the price sensitive folks, I would say this place is on the pricy side for what you actually get. Considering that it's just very basic sandwiches and comfort food, I would rather go to dogtown and get a vegan hot dog for $3.50 and be way more satisfied.

Pros: Vegan, Nice eating area

Cons: Expensive for what you get, Out of basic ingredients

Rochester's Premiere Vegan Destination

The Red Fern is one of my favorite places in Rochester. Their menu is delicious enough to satisfy your meat-eating friends. They offer a variety of vegan comfort-foods, but include healthy options as well (even some raw items). They make fresh juices and smoothies that must be tried. I dream about their compost plate! It is the perfect vegan answer to Rochester's infamous garbage plates featuring a unique take on mac and sweet potato salad. Every time I go I split a compost plate and something from the specials with a friend.

Pros: Excellent Food, Nice Atmosphere, Great Selection and Price
