Just OK - Edit
The food was OK here but nothing really that special to any of the other places around. I appreciate that they seem to understand vegan and have some signs up specifying that you can customize your order to be vegan.

Great service, decent food - Edit
We went here yesterday , it's right in the heart of little India and was really busy. They have an assortment of thali meals ranging from express which includes about 4-5 dahls and veg curries with a chapsti up to a maharajah thali which had god knows how many, like 12/13, which cost 13.90. I got the madras thali which was about 8RM and this was enough to fill me. I specified to the waiter that we didn't want yoghurt. A younger chap who was the guy making the dishes came over and asked us if we were vegan as we said we didn't want yoghurt, which was really good of him and surprised me that someone would take the initiative to ask that. I assume he then only put in the dahls and curries that had no milk in. There's also a sign in the restaurant saying any food can be made vegan on request. Only thing I didn't like was one of the curries, it tastes like men's aftershave or deodorant, but I think that's Sod's law, you either like some or u don't. You can do a pick n mix / buffet type thing. Will be back to try their tofu mix veg sizzler.

thali was great - Edit
sooo tasty and very understanding of vegan request which is rare in Asia!! Waiter brought me extra of a gravy when he'd seen id finished it in about 2 minutes! Only thing he said he'd give me a vegan dessert that comes with the set meal but when I looked at the ingredients after it had condensed milk in it - I was promised it was just coconut milk. So if you are a very strict vegan (hard when travelling as you never really know) make sure you know what you're getting

Deeply dissapointed - Edit
...just to say, I was a loyal customer of this place for a year. Until few days ago.
Read moreThat day I came to eat my favorite dish Curry Mee, but a staff, whom I considered my friend for a year, told me that the cook-lady is on leave for a 15 days and I need to order something else. That guy knows I am vegan and on several occasions before I asked him about ingredients of the dishes I am ordering and he always assures me that there is no concern, all this is vegan, there is coconut milk, soy etc etc.
So this time I tried a new item on the menu. A veg-cheese burger. It says on a menu that it has a vegan mayo and not-animal cheese. And I asked him again just to make sure. So he brought me a burger, and cheese was just as a regular yellow-slice-plastic cheese from any store. But I trusted a guy and finish my burger without more questioning. And being hungry for some more I asked him for some soup and he advise me for a mushroom soup. In 2 min he brought me something that looked and tasted like a regular supermarket can-soup just heated and served. So I went to the kitchen and ask what is the soup made of? He say - "yes the cook just made it himself for you"(cream soup, in 2 min? Really?). And I asked - "what is the ingredients"? After a bit of pushing he told me - "the mushrooms is from a can". I say - "but can I see the can. Some of them have MSG and other unhealthy staff". And he smiled at me and mumble something "well you know you can find it in a supermarket, the green can" And refuse to show it to me.
I check in the supermarket - green can mushroom soup has a chicken stock in it. And of course MSG and the rest of the poison all the fast foods have.
It made me think back about all this "non-animal cheese" taste like regular cheese, "vegan mayo", and all the other days I was assured by him in a very friendly way that all the dishes I eat are pure vegan, no worries.
Well I am worried now. Am I being tricked almost every day for a whole year?
No more NR Sweets for me.
Do not recommend this place for a vegans. They might lie in your face to sell you staff that you don`t want to support.
Pros: Price is a bit over local budget. Just a bit., Variety of local dishes in a vegetarian versions.
Cons: Lie from the staff, Not suitable for healty lifestyle, Not suitable for vegans

This lady is our long time customer and a very very fussy customer. She created her own story just to show her anger.we use vegetable extract enyzme cheese under the brand Melbourne which can get in any supermarket. It is from Fonterra australia and you can google on their website. She lied with her own imagination where she tried to be smart and refuse to accept our staff explaination..the soup is purely original own made soup. The soup powder we prepared readily in our kitchen with corn starch. Thats the reason we can make it as you only need to add in boiling water.Only the button mushroom is in can which content water and its not instant soup as Campbell as she claimed.Again she dont want to listen and throw tantrum at our staff who is not well converse in english. And that mayo is made from vegetable butter which is call shortening. Dont act smart if dont know. We dont need customer like you whom treat our staff like slave. We have been good serving you so polite even with your most unacceptable fussy attitude and your cheapcake mentality expecting high quality food with road side stall price. And this is what we get from you. Blind racist accused.

Thanks for such a great explanation. Bravo! ;-)
Read moreSo perhaps your staff doesn't know Malay language as well or? Since I can understand and talk in both. Because I used to talk to that particular staff and having a friendly casual conversations with him about random things for a whole year. And I considered him being a friend to us.
And it is not at all a racism issue either, where did you bring that one from? As you know my husband is a local man with a 65% Indian blood, and he was with me that day as well as most of the other days) And if your staff couldn't explain "the cheese being from the cow or not" to me in neither Malay or English, he might have explain it to my husband and I would not be in doubt about your place.
So can you please tell me is Curry Me fully vegan ? Nasi Lemak? All the items in a Thali sets? Cheese Burger? That "sorry" soup?
..and perhaps next time if you have any "fussy" customer (Lol) please come talk to them when there is a questions your staff is not able to answer. Please, cause I`ll fully regret if that day ever happens to me or any other "fussy" vegans visiting NR sweets.

Tasty indian food - Edit
The place offers vegetarian food until late at night (10 pm, 01/2017). Different styles of Indian breads and a variety of sauces and curries. Much of the selection has a yogurt or ghee base so it is very suitable for lacto-ovo vegetarians, perhaps a little trickier for vegans. Menu is long and complementary water is offered. A wide selection of sweets are being offered - I believe a few to be vegan.

So Sweet - Edit
Arguably my favourite place to eat in Penang. They have a great mix of veg and vegan food (no meat at all) and to top it off they make sweets. Some of which are also vegan. They are so good and also so very sweet

Tasty food, some vegan options as well. - Edit
Nice premises, clean. Shared with a neighboring Vishnu's Pizza. Some thali dishes and a lot of sweets/cakes. Vegans can choose something from both, too. All very tasty and for a great value! Complimentary water. No plastic (disposable) dishes/cutlery, so environmentally-friendly as well. Most of the offer is for vegetarians, but I recommend it for vegans, too, even if there are not many choices for them - because of the really delicious taste of these few choices. ;)

Onion & Garlic free Indian Vegetarian Restaurant - Edit
It's difficult to find Indian Vegetarian Restaurant in Penang selling pure vegetarian food without the 5 pungent (onion, garlic, leek, chives etc). Indian cuisine requires onion in most of their recipes to bring out the flavour but Thali made it!
Read moreThey are special with their North Indian Cuisine such as the paneer dishes. They are simply delicious!
They serve also local indian dishes and freshly made roti canai, tosai, capati etc.
And their menu - very very wide variety. I like the idea of them putting up descriptions under most of their food title so as to let customers understand what the food is all about, especially for non-indians, which I surely cannot understand what that is just by looking at the name. However, more food photos would definitely be helpful.
As for the sweets, I am not used to the sweetness level of their desserts. I personally think those are not meant to consume daily....
Pros: Onion & Garlic free , Tasty, Wide Choices
Cons: Inattentive staff, Slow Serving , Limited Parking During Office hours

Disappointing - Edit
I was planning to eat at Woodlands but it was packed full with no seats available so I thought I'd try this place instead which was empty (maybe that was a sign!). I tried the thali which wasn't great. Staff were pretty grotty too. On the menu it clearly said in English that an extra portion of rice and vegetable dish was free with the thali. However, I was charged extra when I left.

Disappointing - Edit
This place isn't terrible, and I would have been happy to find it in a small town without other vegetarian options. But in the gourmet-eating paradise of Penang, it's a disappointment. The workers were not very friendly. I chose the only vegan option on the menu (a thali). Most of the (fairly large) menu contains cow milk, butter or cheese. But anyway, it turns out that they just put together the thali from the (not very fresh looking) dishes sitting in the buffet counter - where there are more vegan options. The curries tasted fine - interesting spices. But there wasn't much to them - almost no vegetables, just a bit of mock meat and sauce, and it was cold. I was still hungry afterwards so I ordered a dhal, which was thin and bland, but maybe that's their style. Together it cost around RM 12. The decor is that new, modern, soul-less, fast-food-joint style. The range of sweets looks good but most contain dairy, and when I asked which didn't contain dairy, I didn't trust their answers, since they pointed out some that said milk or butter in their labels.

Cons: Needs more vegan options and better understanding , Unfriendly workers, Unimpressive thali
