No Calories & Extremely Drawn Out Service

I’m surprised to see a few good reviews here for vegans/vegetarians who went to Surrell. My husband and I went for an anniversary dinner and felt like we were trapped there all night, only to be fed a few very low calorie dishes at a very slow pace. Their entire plant-based dining approach is to replace heavy meat mains with something like a grilled celery.

They also spend too much time and money on frivolous details like explaining the decorations on the table, while you are sitting there just wishing you could eat something. When we were there, they didn’t even have a menu, just a poem that was inspired by the menu. It was all incredibly tedious and expensive.

My husband and I love fine dining, so we appreciate some artistry as part of the dining experience. But this was the most frivolous extra details and random presents instead of actual food we’ve ever encountered at this price point.

I feel reluctant to give it one star because the constantly hovering staff were very nice. The restaurant also has a nice atmosphere, but you couldn’t drag me back here!

I wish I had dug deeper on the Google reviews before we went. There you can consistently see complaints about the plant-based options (and the chef arguing back that these dishes are in fact very popular).

Although Seattle isn’t the strongest city for vegan restaurants, there are still much better options than this, even in the fine dining space.

So delicious - but plan ahead

Went here for a prix fixe multi-course meal for a friend's birthday. I had the vegan dish, and others in our group had other options (meat eaters, pescatarians and vegetarians in the group). Since it was reserved in advance they asked for and accommodated all the dietary specifics in our group. And it was so, so good. The ingredients are super fresh, creatively prepared, and beautifully plated. Service was attentive and top-notch. Wine pairing seemed good as well. Would recommend this place for a special occasion meal, just let them know in advance if you're looking for all vegan dishes.

They have vegan options

If you come here with a group of omnis then rest assured they can accommodate you here, but I wouldn’t recommend coming here with vegans. There were a couple of good bites, like the seaweed caviar and the black garlic sauce, but overall the experience we had here felt like a slightly worse version of the Omni options. Hopefully they improve over time, but in particular, the portions were way off. A sliver of fried squash was the equivalent we got for a slab of fish. I also don’t recommend sitting at the bar. It was incredibly crowded and I was knocking elbows with the person next to me.

Excellent

The food here is excellent. The vegetable forward dishes showcase locally grown foods with a modern, creative approach.
The service is excellent. I arrived to a welcome sangria while I was checked in. When I arrived at the table I found a sweet poem and bouquet, in addition to the first course. My section of the patio had three tables, all served at the same time. The chef visited to explain each dish as it arrived. They even gave me a parting gift. They truly thought of everything.

Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance
