Takeaway - Edit
I bought the frozen lasagna and a chunky soup. I can’t put my taste bud on it, but there is an ingredient in both that has an off flavor to me. I wonder if it’s the chicken flavor. Since I’m not wanting to taste chicken or beef, the flavor may just be offensive to me. If they are appealing to the masses, I can see why they would use products to mimic those flavors, but as a vegan- no thank you!

Great people, great place - Edit
First vegan meal in Melbourne and the bar is set high. We arrived at an awkward time between lunch and dinner which meant we didn’t have access to the full menu, but to our delight, the lunch leftovers were 50% off. For me, the kale Caesar was a standout. My dad enjoyed the foghorn leg less the best.

Perfect cozy spot for a rainy day - Edit
I’d been to the original Smith & Deli last September and loved the food there, so you bet I went straight here when I heard another location opened! It’s a bit different from the OG place in that it is quite small and cozy, with less sandwiches and more cafeteria-style hot meals available. They also have a small but true selection of cakes/pastries, as well as lots of frozen meals and refrigerated vegan products and pantry items. The lower floor has all the goodies and the raised floor has the seating, with a counter and stools by the window for people-watching on Delaware Street. There’s a little table to grab your own cutlery and water.
Read moreI started my brunch off with the most decadent-looking lamington I’ve ever seen ($9) with a soy cappuccino ($6). The cappuccino had beautiful latte art and the barista was a darling. Although the sponge in the lamington wasn’t light and airy like it technically should be, it was the best damn lamington I’ve ever had. The raspberry jam in it was delicious and the mock cream wasn’t too sweet and sickly.
Then I ordered a 3-part meal for $24, which was the Peri Peri chicken, mushroom bourginonne, and cauliflower cheese bake. The portion sizes dished out were a bit small and the cauliflower cheese bake was quite bland and needed much more seasoning, but the mushroom bourguignon was rich and flavourful, and the seitan chicken fillet just melted in your mouth. The layering of fibres in it too was just incredible. The vibes inside were warm and cozy and perfect for journalling in between coffee sips despite it being busy. I’ll definitely be back, hopefully with a non-vegan friend next time- that chicken fillet or lamington alone would be enough to convert them!
Edit: on my 5th visit now I can highly recommend any of the desserts except the cherry cake (gluey and unpleasant), the peri-peri chicken fillet, baked sweet potato, chilli tofu, the Nobody Calls Me Chicken Sandwich, and the mushroom bourguignon. Avoid the cauliflower bake, tofu scramble, “bacon”, and matcha latte- bland, limp, and bitter, respectively.

It was… so bad. - Edit
I was really excited to try the CBD venue for Smith & Deli, being somewhat of a regular of their Fitzroy venue when I worked on smith st I knew it was going to be good - but nothing could prepare me for how utterly terrible my sausage muffin was. They’ve got it wrapped in nothing but a sealed plastic bag, I unwrapped my treat to find it absolutely sopping wet. The only detectable flavour in the entire thing was plastic, and I just couldn’t believe this wet, soggy bread filled with what looked like it could have been an incredibly tasty, well seasoned vegan sausage and egg, ended up being nothing more than the ultimate f*** you to my excitement and joy.
Read moreThe coffee was very average.
The staff were absolutely f***ing delightful, great banter, excellent people skills, fantastic faces of the business.
3 stars because I cannot bare to give an all-vegan business anything lower, and because your staff are so lovely. Seriously though guys how could you think it was a good idea to wrap hot food in sealed plastic and then leave it on a heated shelf for hours? And for god sakes use some salt.

🤩 So awesome 🥳 - Edit
Smith and Deli in the CBD, great news. And the hype was well deserved. Eat in meals, sandwiches, take away, home delivery, pastries, desserts, and evening tapas and wine bar.
Read moreSo we’ve now been during the day and the evening. First visit during the afternoon, had a market plate and a dessert, the food was lovely, and brought a GF Shepards Pie for home. And the Egg Martinez is just great comfort food 😋
Came back for an evening wine and tapas. Yum, and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Shannon and her staff are so friendly.
The upstairs space is quite small, you can’t book, but of an evening extra tables are set up downstairs also.

A Quick Bite in Degraves - Edit
It is really good to see a Smith & Deli in the Melbourne CBD as I have been to the Collingwood one and found their food to be excellent. Even better, this place is located in the iconic Degraves Street and is right next to Flinder Streets Station and Town Hall Station. When eating in, ordering seems as easy as pointing to food. The area where you eat seemed small to me and it got really busy during a weekday lunchtime. The food I had was great and I hope to visit this place multiple times.

S&D express style! - Edit
Enjoyed the lunch plate. The chili tofu and green beans was the standout dish for me. Nice 'spring' to the tofu. A bit more heat the tofu would have been nice. The cauliflower bake was nice, but was under seasoned and could have done with more salt. The beef bourguignon was nice and flavorful (I think they use the shitake meat- fable brand). Peri -Peri chicken was good (had nice separate layers to mimic meat). The spice could have ramped up and bit more along with salt and some more charring could have really elevated it. Overall, a delicious lunch and would definitely return to try evening tapas.
Read morePros: quick, flavourful, good for takeaways
Cons: portions a bit on the small side compared to price, few dishes could use refinement to amp flavour, could be hard to get a table during busy periods

The breakfast fast food isn’t healthy, but it’s tasty. Yet to try lunch & dinner. Good to have a Euro style vegan restaurant in the CBD.

So excited to have a new place in the CBD - Edit
Haven’t been for the day part yet, went for the nighttime Tapa’s.
Read moreI particularly liked the Aioli Tortilla, and the cheese croquets were good too. I really enjoyed the Focaccia (but my partner who is much more of a bread person -did not).
We both enjoyed a S&D orange juice-yum.
The patata’s bravo’s were fine, but nothing special and not up to the quality I was expecting from there. I have had much better many times at multiple other venues.. However, it’s still 5 stars from me!
Very exciting to have a new venue, the staff were all so lovely.
Everyone else eating there at the same time as me ordered the mushrooms and all loved them. I’m not a mushroom fan, but they sure looked good.
Neither of the deserts were my thing so I didn’t have desert, options were tiramisu and a cheese & fruit mince empanada.
Great location. Very excited to try it in the daytime!

Pros: Tortilla , Cheese Croquet , Orange Juice
Cons: Patata’s Bravas have been better elsewhere, Would have liked different desert option, Would have liked mocktails or more drink options

Delicious hot meals - Edit
I had a hot meal with 3 dishes. I had cauliflower “cheese”, crispy tofu and “beef” bourguignon. They were all delicious. I also had a soy flat white and the coffee was strong and hot. Delicious. They gave us some donut holes which were yummy. My partner had a hot meal plate too with lentils, chickpeas and carrots which he enjoyed. You can pay a bit extra and get an extra dish if you want.
Read moreI wanted to try tapas before a ballet I was attending so I went there a bit early. They add a few more seats at “the bar” and a couple of tables added as you walk in at night. I shared focaccia, croquettes, patatas bravas and the mushrooms. Everything was nice but the mushrooms really stood out. Would like to try some other options and suggested they have some mocktails.
There is seating (about 16 seats).
It is up some stairs though. They sell ready made meals and desserts too.
