Delicious vegan food - Edit
The food is amazing, but the seating area is very small and the staff don’t even let you wash your hands after eating, even though they have a sink.. I couldn’t understand this. Other than that nice.😄

We started every day in Amsterdam with a Saint-Jean lunch and a sweet treat from the bakery! The kind of place that makes you think about moving city permanently 🤣

Fantastic savoury pastries - Edit
The sandwiches described on the menu sounded great but today there were only pastries and cakes, so we shared three savoury pastries: spicy cheese croissant, hoisin bun and smoked feta galette. All fantastic!

Blew my mind - Edit
Came here to get a sandwich for my travel day after checking out the bakery. I didn’t realize they would have so many pastries as well! I came early and only a few sandwiches were available so I randomly picked the chickn katsu. Oh my! It was so flavorful, the bread so good, and so saucy. The perfect sandwich (not something I’m usually impressed with but Saint-Jean changed that).

Great food, bad atmosphere - Edit
There’s no doubt that Saint Jean does some delicious vegan food, both sweet and savoury. However, it’s got some disappointing aspects that make me score it lower, as a local and once regular vegan customer.
Read moreIt’s clear that (most of) the customers and staff don’t care about animals.
Something that made this glaringly obvious to me last week was customers practically stepping on a poor injured pigeon who was struggling to move out the way in time. Customers and staff walked past him without even a flinch of concern.
After this encounter, when I went to order my food, I overheard the staff talking about how they crave “real meat” and there’s only “so much fake chicken they can take” - with shrill laughter. I found this extremely distasteful. Now I’m not saying you have to be vegan to work here, but with only a handful of all vegan places around, I’d like to feel comfortable and welcomed not mocked by the staff who work there. I don’t know if the owner is vegan and this might not be their intention, but it would be nice if they’d hire people who are more respectful of the cause, if not vegans themselves.
10/10 for the food though, just not the atmosphere.

Savoury Saint Jean - Edit
The savoury sister store to the other one with a perpetual queue. We tried 3 of the sandwiches during our trip, they are not as good as their pastry items we had but still decent option for lunch.

Oh how I wish I knew someone who works here! - Edit
Saint Jean the bakery often has a queue but across the road the deli which has almost as many cakes and sweets but also does savoury delights tends to be queue free! Go figure! Neither place makes it obvious they are a vegan but they are and they do it wonderfully. (I gave them a Happy Cow window sticker, I'll be happily surprised if it gets put in their window.) My very tardy mate made up for leaving me hanging around without contacting me for almsot an hour by offering to py for our "snacks"! That must have been painful when it came to paying. On my own I would only be able to afford a treat from here every now and then. Let loose by my comrades guilt inspired generosity we had a party! And I can promise you nothing was a dissapointment. The tuna sandwhich was swell, the tiramisu cake superb and the other five things we shared inbetween those all tasted great. Treat yourself to a pastry every now and then or better still find a mate to treat you to two!

Sweet and savory delights - Edit
Delightful vegan pastry shop with coffees and pistachio soft serve ice cream. The tuna sandwich was awesome and felt like the real thing. The pastrami with mustard was nice too. Good creamy coffees. It was an operation trying to get a seat so we could enjoy our coffees. They say you need to order first before sitting but then you can’t be sure to get a table. Luckily we managed and brought sweet pastries from their place opposite as well. Yum! I’d love to try everything on the menu.

Stop over for a coffee and pastry - Edit
Cute little cafe in a quieter area of Amsterdam. All plant-based so you have all the pastries/sandwiches to choose from. The staff are friendly and nice and the food is tasty. Loved the cinnamon croissant and the Hoisin bun!

Great pastries - Edit
Our first stop in Amsterdam was a great one.
Read moreThey have a range of savoury and sweet pastries and cakes.
We had a Hoisin Bun and a Smoked Feta Galette from the savoury side and a fig tart and croissant pudding.
The hoisin bun was packed full of flavour and quite rich for the size of it.
The Galette was the best thing we tried. It was cheesy, spicy goodness.
The fig tart was lovely too, flaky pastry, sweet fig jam and a creamy topping.
The croissant pudding was lighter than I expected but still a little stodgy.
We were also offered a free salty pistachio ice cream that was delicious.
Would recommend a visit here as it all looked and smelled amazing.
