I'm surprised there hasn't been a review yet for this place. Recently bought 3 out of 4 flavours of the vegan ice cream Roskilly's sell. Since the ice cream itself is a brand that comes in a small tub, it's not fair to conflate the two in my review.
I'm giving Roskilly's 5 stars for the fact they've gone to the effort to source a LOCAL vegan ice cream, in a small coastal town that typically attracts tourists who like traditional British coastal holidays (dairy ice cream galore and fish and chips) rather than somewhere like Brighton. This is the sort of thing, when I went vegan 10 years ago, I never thought would happen: being able to go to a random place and simply buy the vegan version of what everyone else is eating, on the go. It's really nostalgic to get ice cream at the beach and the girl working there was super friendly. I'd gone to Nourish earlier in the day (a fully vegan cafe in Teignmouth) at 2:45 in hope of getting a takeout salad box, but they informed me they'd already stopped serving food and were a bit funny about being asked about gluten-free options. I was quite hungry so this was a less healthy but more fitting and fun alternative.
As for the ice cream, it's a brand called Vibe, made in Cornwall. I'd never heard of it before. If I was to rate that only, I'd give it 3 out of 5. It is very creamy, the raspberry ripple is delicious but the chocolate wins the trophy (even better if you combine the two)! The mint chocolate chip is a bit like toothpaste foam though. There was a mango one I think would be nice. It works out £2.50 per small tub, which is on the pricey side. When you look at the ingredients, it's basically coconut cream with emulsifiers like guar gum and what knocks points off it for me, is the fact it says "may contain milk, gluten" etc. So if you're strict on that, then beware, but I know most vegans shrug their shoulders at that. It's a real pet peeve of mine that this disclaimer is now on nearly every new vegan product... so it's not unique to this company called Vibe and I'm more relaxed about "may contain" when eating out anyway. It's a shame because Roskilly's put the vegan tubs to the side, which is thoughtful as it would otherwise totally prevent cross-contamination with their dairy flavours.
Again, I can't fault a cosy little parlour on an old beachy pier supplying 4 vegan flavours in a traditional, small coastal place. I really enjoyed the experience!
