AVOID if you are vegetarian, vegan, have any allergies or dietary restrictions - Edit
Not for vegetarians, vegan, or people with dietary restrictions. UNSAFE for people with allergies. Dishonest owners.
The "vegetarian spring rolls" I ordered had pork in them. I pointed this out to the owner and he refused to listen to me. He gaslit me and kept insisting that it was just taro until I lifted a large very obvious chunk of pork out of the food and handed it to him. He took it, wordlessly, and replaced my order. The next spring rolls he brought ALSO had pork in them. He tried a third time and AGAIN there was pork in them. (I've eaten their veggie spring rolls before and they're completely different.)
Eating pork is against my religion, so it was quite upsetting to accidentally eat it. I explained this to him and he was completely unapologetic. (I understand that mistakes happen. A simple "sorry" would have made a huge difference.)
Instead, he still tried to charge me for them even though he never replaced them with actual vegetarian spring rolls. I had to insist several times before he would remove them from my bill. Incredibly disrespectful.
My husband (who is vegan) and I (mostly veg) have been going to this restaurant for well over 10 years and they have a great selection of tasty vegan options. Owner is in the restaurant every day, running the operation with his wife who cooks most of the meals, and they are always very accommodating with our special requests (extra tofu or veggies, leaving stuff out, etc). A18 is one of our all time faves (vegan Vietnamese seasoned pork and fried tofu dish with veg and rice) and A16 lemongrass tofu & vermicelli with fresh herbs, pickled carrots, and peanuts. Fish sauce comes on the side so just be sure to specify if you are vegan and he’ll replace the fish sauce with a soy sauce (my husband makes his own vegan fish sauce). Spring rolls are delicious. Big portions. We have only ever had issues twice in all those years where one special order item was missed or we got the wrong order but it was fixed immediately and we were treated to extra spring rolls on the house next time to make up for it. We love this place!
Went in for a pick up durning corona times. After I paid I went to the washroom. We returned and was told I didn’t pay yet, with receipt rectified that.
Then it was clear they had mixed up orders, but insisted I had the right bags. I asked 5 times if he was sure “Yes yes don’t worry”. Went to the car and decided to check the bags and containers. Nope wrong order, meat dishes. Went back in after opening someone else’s order (during corona time). We went through the containers to show him it wasn’t mine. Went to the back, came out with “My Order” was reassured with “don’t worry don’t worry” when I asked this is the vegan order?
Took it home. Veggie wontons also had meat wontons mixed among them. 15 minutes after we finished eating the remainder of the soup noodles and tofu, 4 out of 5 members of my family had immediate and repeated diarrhea.
