Yuba heaven - Edit
Totally unique experience. Perfect place for those with carnie partners.
Read moreYou get a choice of 2 set menus, boiled tofu or Yuba.
I had the Yuba set which was sooooo much fun.
You wait for the pot in the middle to set a skin and then swirl it off and eat it. It tasted to me like egg yolk (if I remember it correctly!) creamy and rich.
Tonnes of different types of tofu and so interesting to see it being made.

Nice traditional experience - Edit
Entrance is a bit hard to find but it is very close to Kyomizu Dera. Depending on the time you go you might have to wait a bit if you don’t have to reservation. If you sit by the windows you get a nice distant view of the city. Staff was nice, quick and spoke some English. You just need to tell them you’re vegan/vegetarian and they’ll show you which meal sets are plant based in their menu. Their dishes are mostly tofu based. The yuba set was fun and tasty, although a couple of other dishes in the set didn’t have much flavour. The veggie tempura was amazing. It was a fullfilling meal. Really recommend this place if you want to have a more traditional food experience.

Good Tofu - Edit
This restaurant serves Yuba and Yudoufu set meals.
Read moreThey serve a good variety of dishes and the amount is definitely enough to fill you up.
If you get the yuba set you get a hot pot on the table filled with a thin layer of soymilk. By heating it up yuba forms and you can scoop it out yourself which is fun and really delicious.
The restaurant itself seems more like they want to serve a lot of people and is a big room with many tables.
The staff are friendly but rather distant.
Pros: Tasty, Big portions

Visit to Okabeya - Edit
We visited on 14 Dec 2023. Food was good till we discovered by looking through the kitchen window that they fried the vegetable tempura together with the sardines. Not suitable if you are a strict vegetarian or vegan.

Only white peach sherbet ice cream is vegan - Edit
I visited today and asked the server about the tofu ice cream. She said all ice cream has dairy products in them apart from the white peach sherbet ice cream. I asked about the cone and she checked in the allergy list and told me that it also contained dairy products.
Read moreSo, it was peach sherbet ice cream in a cup for me! It was very delicious and refreshing and perfect for a hot day like today!

Interesting tofu ice cream - Edit
I had the tofu ice cream. I suspect it to just taste like soy milk, but surprisingly, it did have a taste of roasted tofu.

Oriental Vegetarian (Allium-free) - Edit
Serves Oriental Vegetarian options. A very unique and interesting experience with soy dishes. Prepare google translate to customize dishes for vegetarians. What I understood from the staff was that they only have the Yuba and Yudofu set that can be made Oriental Vegetarian.
Read moreWe ordered 2 sets of Yuba and 2 sets of Yudofu for 4 ladies (about ¥9,400) and we were very very full. Might be just nice if we ordered one set of Yudofu instead (not sure if they allow it as most places require a minimum of 1 order per person).
If you are unsure of how to eat it, you can check with the staff too, they can guide you. As too many dishes were served, we were confused about which set it belonged to.
For Yuba, wait till the soy milk thickens then pick it up with the bamboo skewer. You can eat it on its own or with sauce :)

Great Quality! - Edit
My husband and I stopped by here for lunch after visiting the Kiyomizudera temple. There were two set options. It was a lot of tofu, cooked and prepared in many different ways, plus tempura. The quality of the food was amazing and very authentic. Overall I would definitely recommend this place. The location is perfect, right in the middle of the main market street out from the temple. We didn’t have a reservation but were seated pretty quickly. The service was ok - no one came to our table to take our order for a good 15 minutes after we were seated, during which time we saw at least 3 other parties were seated and had their orders taken. But the food was great.

Tasty and authentic! - Edit
This was really yummy! The staff knew what was vegetarian and helped us to order. We got the tofu set with vegetable tempura for two people and it was loads of food! They brought us a vegetarian soy sauce and were really clear about it. It was nice to try some authentic Japanese food! The location is really good and though we had a short wait it seats a lot of people!
