A Somewhat Bumpy Road

I feel that it is my duty to forewarn you that accessing this restaurant is never likely to be a pleasurable experience. Located where it is, the struggle against mall traffic will always be a factor—and missing the turning (as I did) will also not help.
Once there, there is no denying the class of both the hotel and restaurant itself; the sense of serenity that exudes from every facet of the building is incredible given the madness that lies at its doorstep.
Suitably relaxed and ever so dutifully shown to my seat, I was ready to be blown away by what promised to be—on the face of things—an outstanding dining experience. However, what transpired was a rather tepid affair. The initial promise soon gave way to something hovering above mediocrity, especially when compared to other brunches elsewhere in the city.
This is not to say that the food was bad; quite the contrary, it was rather good–the fresh, flavoursome ratatouille, and the gloriously vibrant gazpacho easily being the standouts. Adequate too was the range of options that were available on the spread; it just lacked any real dynamism and conspired to feel a little lacklustre. The fact that the chef was willing to provide tailored, plated dishes away from what was available on the buffet certainly helped, but even these weren’t particularly spectacular and certainly not enough to shift my overall assessment.
Was my impression of the place somewhat sullied by the horrendous effort it took to actually get there? Possibly. Ultimately, I felt as though this was a venue that was trying too hard—this was most evident when it came to the service. No doubt they serve some very exacting clientele, which may have been the reason that everything seemed a touch fraught, and in trying to do all things for all people at all times, things became muddled.
A charming establishment, to be sure, and a great place to unwind in style, but I have my reservations about returning.
