Amazing Japanese food - Edit
Small, Japanese minimalist setting. Varied menu. Amazing flavourful food. We had tempeh fingers, assorted veggie tempura, hand rolls and ramen. All food was superb!

I looooove vegan Japanese food! - Edit
Such good food here! Really flavourful and tasty. The spiced inari and Kusa tempeh were both great. However, the organic black chaco noodles were the star of the evening. I’ve never tried something like it before and was so impressed. Really nice sesame flavour. Will absolutely be trying to recreate at home. The matcha cupcake was a nice little sweet treat to finish off the meal.

Fell short of high expectations - Edit
I expected to be blown away. Its top rating and price point set a high bar for a first-time visitor. I chose the restaurant for a special occasion, and while I don’t regret treating myself, I wasn’t enchanted by the the end of the evening. When I arrived, they didn’t have my name on the reservation list even though I had contacted them through WhatsApp and gotten a thumbs up reply. There was some confusion about what to do but we were ultimately seated after a short wait. I would say the whole mood of the restaurant was austere. No one was ever rude or unfriendly but neither did it feel welcoming or warm.
Read moreWe ordered potato wedges (I love fried potatoes), jjajang noodles, and three types of sushi: climate maki, mango sushi, and spices inari. I also had the vegan crème brûlée cheesecake for dessert. The noodles were the stand out dish. They were quite spicy; we chose 3 on a scale of 1 to 5. I believe their vegan version tops the traditional version made with the pork. I want to go back for the noodles more than anything else. When it came to the sushi, I was honestly a little bored. Besides the mango, most flavors were subdued. It seems like the perfect opportunity to play around with textures and flavors using different fruits and vegetables and various preparations. Finally, the dessert was a complete disappointment. I was still hungry, so I ate the whole thing. It failed to deliver in any of the best qualities of either crème brûlée or cheesecake. It was dense with a very thick crust, and the flavors were muddled. It shouldn’t be on the menu, and I should have ordered the tiramisu.
I never set out to give a harsh review. Like I said, I chose Kusa as a treat for a special occasion. I also want to be kind to fully vegan restaurants. It’s possible I would return to Kusa and give it another try, because it is so loved and there were a couple of highlights. It’s hard not to hold them to a higher standard when the reviews are almost universally positive and when the cost is significantly higher than most KL restaurants. (I spent about twice as much at Kusa for one person than at any other restaurant I’ve visited in KL.)

Kusa - Edit
What a delightful Japanese restaurant! The spongy tofu was an absolute highlight for me. Its taste and texture were simply incredible. We also opted for the “all-in-one” medium-sized platter, which allowed us to savor a variety of sushi pieces. We were thoroughly satisfied with our choices. The spices inari was another dish we ordered, but it was quite ordinary in my opinion. I had anticipated a spicier flavor. On the other hand, the Kusa Ramen was truly exceptional. We ordered it at level five spicy and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just a note, the menu only displays levels one through five, but we discovered later that you can actually request spicier food if that’s your preference.

Lighter on the Palate - Edit
Vegan restaurant with nice ambience and pleasant service, selling Japanese and other Asian-inspired dishes. The flavours were cleaner and lighter on the palate, and seemed to emphasise whole food ingredients. The mango sushi with g-ken floss left a deeper impression on us and is something I would recommend trying if you're here!

Huge Menu - Edit
Huge menu to choose from; starters, salads, soups, sushi, ramen, bowls…
Read moreI shared the curry tempeh, edamame, spongy tofu and potato wedges to start, then the medium all in one and mango sushi for mains with tiramisu for dessert. Everything was amazing, probably the best sushi I’ve ever had (and I love sushi!). I also had passion fruit soda which paired really well.
The restaurant itself is beautiful, staff were friendly and helpful, service was excellent.

Blooming delicious! - Edit
So happy we found this little gem. Would highly recommend. Reasonably priced and all delicious. Staff really friendly. Music and atmosphere very relaxing. Just be warned, the spicy ramen is very spicy (and delicious). We ordered way too much food but couldn't resist and ate it all... too quickly to take photos of everything but all really good.

Delightful Japanese food with romantic ambiance - Edit
This is my first visit to this vegan Japanese restaurant and the food and service were impressive and memorable. This restaurant is located at the ground floor of a well-furbished building and the decor and ambiance of this restaurant are generally warm and intimate as the lighting was quite dim, making it rather romantic for couples to dine in. The restaurant was already partially filled with diners when we entered at around 6pm.
Read moreWe ordered Passion Fruit Kafel, Mango Sushi, Potato Wedges, Tempeh Fried Rice and Choco Cup Cake, and there is a 10% service charge and 6% tax imposed. Do note that the portion of each dish is generally small and mouthful, yet the dishes are crafted to be delectable to indulge in. The Potato Wedges and Mango Sushi were mouth-watering and I would love to repeat the order of these two dishes. I did not like the Passion Fruit Kafel as it tasted like carbonated soft drink with the fizz. The Tempeh fried rice was delicious too. The Choco Cup Cake was mediocre as this dessert was not our intended order.
At the time of our dining, it was disappointing that the Creme Brûlée Mini Cheesecake had been sold out as I had specifically chosen this restaurant just for the vegan version of this dish. I am hoping that on my next visit to this restaurant, this unique dessert would be available. As the menu is quite extensive, there are many other food which I would love to try such as noodles and porridge, perhaps on my next visit. All in all, this restaurant deserves to be highly recommended as the quality of each dish and ambiance are almost equivalent to that of fine dining, yet the food prices are highly affordable.
Pros: Delectable food, Attentive service, Romantic ambiance
Cons: Unavailability of Creme Brûlée Mini Cheesecake, Portions are small

Hidden gem with amazing flavors 🍣✨ - Edit
Everything was really good — my favorite was definitely the crispy potatoes! I loved the vibe of the restaurant. It’s tucked inside a larger building on the left, so it can be a little bit tricky to find. A great spot for delicious vegan Japanese food in Kuala Lumpur.

Excellent Vegan Experience - Edit
Before I comment on the excellent food, I need to point out the toilets situation which is a shared facility with the office building in which restaurant is co-located. The toilets are basically filthy. A big disappointment after a wonderful culinary experience. Getting back to the food, we had the Hand Cut Potato Wedges, the Spongy Tofu, the Seaweed Fried Rice, and the All-in-One (10pcs). All were delicious. We also had a Passion Fruit Kaffel. Excellent service. Lovely ambiance. Good pricing too. Modest portions.

Their Kusa ramen is one of the best I’ve tried so far! Definitely recommend trying it.

Lots of tables inside to sit at and no reservation needed.

Extensive menu… a bit pricey though - Edit
impressive, extensive menu - amazing when you’re missing Japanese dishes that you used to enjoy before going vegan. Service was efficient and friendly, and the food came quickly.
Read moreWe enjoyed the Tempura Miso Ramen, Kusa Ramen, and Popcorn Mushroom. Our six-year-old (who’s always been vegan) enjoyed the Kids Plate, so much so that he finished two of them in one sitting. According to him, it’s “the yummiest sushi I’ve ever tried!” 😄 Also great that they have dessert, although their cupcakes are only about half the size of the vegan ones in Australia, but priced the same.
Overall, it was a good experience. Looking at the menu before ordering, I was thinking we’d be going back every day/night we’re in KL, but considering the price and the number of options around, probably not.
