Very salty!

The food here is nice but the dips are so salty! Can’t complain for the price but I think the food is nicer elsewhere

Pros: Cheap , Local place

Cons: Far too salty

Great local food, friendly staff

We changed upon this eatery while looking for a place to eat. The food was great, cheap and came in big portions. We had normal rice and curry, some vades and lemon rice with curry. The lemon was particularly my favourite. Staff was really helpful, explaining everything we asked with patience and big smiles.

Go where the locals go!

Second time in Sri Lanka, after 15 years, a lot has changes, yet not much changed overall.
When reading comments on best places to eat, I always take a few steps back before I follow blindly recommendations on where to eat.
As a global traveller, I am extremely weary of any tourist packed restaurants. it is always the same story, either the place is a hidden gem, making genuine local food at a local price in local setup... or it has become somehow a tourist trap, where stranded foreigners with little taste for adventure end up following equally ignorant and scarred apostles.
I passed by the highly promoted Balaji Dosai shop today to see a line of foreigners ready to order. That alone, prompted me to pass this shop and walk further.
Only a few steps further did I stumble on a humble local joint, filled with locals eating local offering.
Having checked out the first place's menu, this Hotel Saumiya, looked everything like the same. At least on the menu side. Main difference was customers whereabouts, foreign tourists vs locals. Besides a lost English gentleman with his local guide there were no other foreign faces sitting here.
Reminded me of my last trip to Saigon, eating in a hole in the wall joint filled with locals, not far from the social media crazed joint filled with local tourists.
Restaurant is clean, food offering clear in both English and local languages.
Owner and wife hold the cashier desk, with the man of the house sitting at the cashier and his wife running between cashier desk and ordering stall.
In the street front counter, plenty of deep fried buns and multi grains vegan patties. Clean and fresh from appearance.
Friendly and smiling owner with basic English ready to explain what was what.
Ordered couple bean based paties and added a Masala Dosai together with one rice with curry plate, lemon juice. Coming from Chongqing home to some of the hottest Chinese food, I asked for the hottest possible taste.

Food came quickly, very hot and authentic. Simple vegan tasting food, curries, sauces. Nothing was very hot, to my own taste. Bottom line is if you don't like hot and spicy food, don't travel in Asia!

Large servings, warm freshly prepared food. Nothing out of this world, but tasted authentic and freshly made which means a lot already in this part of the world.
Staff was caring and happy to see me dig in with great appetite.
Price feels very fair and acceptable.
Always eat where locals eat!

Pros: Fresh, warm and authentic, Only locals eat here.

Cons: Asked for sugar free lime juice still had sugar

good but spicy (I mean it)

the food was - like Indian food is - very authentic, yummy and … spicy. and very affordable!

unfortunaley, although we specifilly requested a non-spicy meal (we asked if it‘s possible to make it non spicy, theay said yes and it came out hot as hell), but it was. after request they gave me curd.
I don‘t know if that mistake is on me (if I should have known that the spice measurements of Indian food is nonreliable to a nothern german) so … 4/5 cause my partner liked it

the service also forgot a part of our order.

Friendly staff, tasty food

To confirm, this place is open, a classic pure veg place offering dosa, idli, hoppers, rice and curry etc. really friendly and welcoming staff who are very attentive and jokey. Plus the best masala chai we have ever tasted ! (Please note - chai is not vegan). Cheap prices and worth going.
