healthy oil free refined sugar free vegan food - Edit
I have the feeling that the people who dislike the food here aren't used to oil-free cooking. I thought it was delicious. The bean soup is super yummy! I hear the mole and guac are good.

Trendy, good concept but expensive and a little bland - Edit
Hierba dulce is probably the most popular vegan spot in Oaxaca. It is BEAUTIFUL here! Servers speak good English and everything is vegan. They serve local and seasonal produce only from farms they know. Everything is made in house. We got the enfrijoladas and the enchiladas and guacamole. Guacamole starter was AMAZING but our other meals weren’t so good. Beautiful presentation though and yummy drinks.

Plain - Edit
The place itself is cute and we really appreciated to try some local healthy food. Everything seems fresh and there is a big effort on presentation.
Read moreNonetheless we tried one soup and the enchiladas and everything was very plain. They seems not to use too much salt or spices or oil to keep the flavor of ingredients of great quality, but unfortunately it really missed taste. Had to empty the two bowls of salsa in my soup to actually taste something. The cheese topped on the enchiladas is completely tasteless. Plus the portions are quite small for the price (quite expensive for Mexico City)
I tried the chocolate dessert and it was very good though. With a strong and rich flavor of chocolate and not much sugar.
My friends tried the mole and said it was delicious, so i guess you need to order more expensive food to get something better.
The staff is very friendly and happy to explain the local ways of cooking the different dishes.

Outstanding - Edit
Beautiful, inventive, delicious food in a lovely courtyard. Would have happily gone back if we had more time in Oaxaca. Make sure to get starters as these were arguably the highlights in a strong menu - apart from the chocolate paradise for dessert...

Traditional indigenous vegan food - Edit
This place is beyond amazing. Even more because they are cooking indigenous food and the indigenous people at that time were not eating meet or drinking milk. The food is delicious and it is not expensive compare to others restaurant! Staff is super friendly

Plan ahead and book a table - Edit
Unfortunately I was a bit in rush that day and I had to wait for table. Or better, I could book a table for good half an hour or so later so I could head off and get the things done I still needed to do. Because of their business hours I couldn't go there earlier. It's more Mexican with brekkie and big lunch. It seemed like they don't have many tables so I bet their are nearly always full.
Read moreI would have liked to sample all the moles but 300 pesos for one meal is a bit pricey. The empanada I had instead was traditional and ok, I found the almond cheese a little bland. I liked their guacamole and the dessert with maiz flour was good. First place for me to eat nopales and in this case it was the salad. I was a little disappointed that it didn't have much taste on its own but the salad as a whole was good.
I find it great that they don't use any commercially produced products in their cooking. That is definitely worth supporting!
The staff was quite relaxed but attentive and nice asking if I need the dessert as a take-away.
Pros: Lots of traditional Mexican dishes without meat, Samling moles is possible, Everything made from scratch
Cons: Mole sampling is super pricey, Probably gotta wait if you haven't booked a table

Incredible place, so calming, good food and lots of vegan options - Edit
We have been for lunch twice on our trip as we just love this place. There is a quiet courtyard with cacti and a waterfall, which makes for a relaxing place to eat. Many, many vegan options (perhaps all of the menu?), including empanadas, moles, tacos, soups, panini, salads, desserts.... Good prices. Staff are friendly and speak good English. Highly recommend. You may need to wait if it's but but it's worth the wait.

Sublime true oaxacan cuisine
Read moreThis is an unbelievably good place to eat. Not just for vegans, but for the whole world. They distill the wonder of the herbs and plants of the Oaxaca region into a soul and spirit lifting food for us lowly humans. They make a food directed by the gods! Everything is good. Hesitate not. Say hey to the absolutly charming host, José, who speaks perfect english.. And bow down to the chef, Majora, who teaches cuisine in Mexico City a couple times a month, sharing her brilliant expertise. The 7 molés is a great taste sensation. If you go in the fall, regale in the mushroom specialties. Everything I have tried, and I have been there 5 times, is excellent. Mind altering guacamole, simple and herbal. I’m going again tomorrow and the next day until I finally head, reluctantly, home. Enjoy, all you good people !!

Hierba Dulce Is Good - Edit
Niceee place. Everything is homemade it seems like. Everything is vegan except for one or two things which have honey. If you are eating on the cheap the nopales salad which comes with chips is recommended. Panini was 3.5/5. The moles are really good. Ask if some are in stew form because some of them come in a pot with tortillas on the side in case you don't want that. The more pricey mole might not have been worth it so the average price ones are totally fine. Service is good to the point that sometimes the waiters are hovering ready to grab that dish. Dont like when they do that. Let a guy eat! But at the same time they are really nice all the servers so dont want to knock em too much. Still 5 outta 5.

Must try!!!!!!! - Edit
This restaurant is the ultimate proof that you can have traditionnal Mexican food at gastronomic level and even cheaper than many non vegan options. If you are in Oaxaca even for 1 day, GO! We went twice in 3 days and each time tried different dishes, each of them excellent. The deserts are also very tasty. Every thing is vegan except for 1 traditional dessert, which has honey. If you are curious about the moles, Hierba Dulce offers a degustation of the 7 traditional moles, for 2 people with homemade tortillas (for 400 pesos). It is a whole experience, we had moles in other places, but here the cooks really achieved a perfect balance of flavours. We also had a chocolate mousse which was amazing. Second time we had the enchiladas de hoja santa and the chile relleno, both with almond cheese (60 pesos each), both perfect. Even the guacamole was perfect! They have special seasonal dishes and the staff is very friendly. When we sent our congratulations to the chef, she even came to thank us and explain a bit more about the moles' preparation. They have a pretty and quiet patio, where you can stay even when it rains. Hierba dulce is more than a lunch, it is a whole experience!

All vegan, delicious bread - Edit
Delicious (all vegan!) food. Only downside was the beverages. The “agua del día” with mango and the cappuccino both tasted like water. The food was really good and homemade, especially the sour dough bread was really good.

Nice, but hit and miss - Edit
Have eaten here a couple of times now and between two of us, we've had a couple of nice meals and a couple that weren't very good.
Read moreThe service is great and the venue is really nice - great courtyard for sitting in the sunshine while you eat - but some of the dishes don't really have any flavour, or are just quite "earthy" tasting.
I would recommend trying the blue corn empanadas, and the guacamole which is some of the best I've ever had - the homemade salsas are wonderful too. But avoid the chile relleno - even with lots of additional flavour added to it (salsas, hibiscus sauce, citrus etc) it still didn't taste of much other than a sort of muddy earthy tone, and the portion was tiny (although price also quite low). The empanada though was a great big portion.
There's a red bean based soup with avocado which was nice, but we also weren't sure about the enchilada we tried - again, it tasted earthy and not of much (albeit we both agreed 'it does taste like it must be very healthy') and the sauce with it actually tasted a lot like a gravy you would find in the UK, which was strange to have on a tortilla dish.
Pros: Almost all food is vegan, many dishes are cheap
Cons: Some dishes don't taste very nice at all
