Had their vegan kapsalon, which was ok. They make a more healthy version, not very big portion but rather expensive for what you get. Did not fill me up.

Amazing sandwich - Edit
GYS used to be one of my favorite places in Utrecht because all the deserts they served were vegan. Of the main courses, they also had quite a few ones labeled as vegan.
Read moreSince a few months I find the food very underwhelming. The vegan kapsalon is nice but not super special and the vegan burgers are simply bland and tasteless. Also, there are not as many vegan deserts anymore, which I find a pity. Where there used to be about four different options, there's now only one or two.
I now don't really enjoy going here anymore. GYS, what happened? I thought we were a good match.
Update 2019: this GYS is now all vegetarian and the food is really tasty again! The club sandwich is to die for, we sometimes even order it from home.

Every dish but one has a vegan option, and a gluten free option. I had the satay which was really yummy, although a bit too rich, and my friends had the veggie burger. I also had the coconut milk hot chocolate, which was really really good. Probably the highlight of our meal was the pear crumble, absolutely worth it.

Reserve a seat if you know you're going to go! Wednesday evening was pretty full and I had to eat at the bar (which was fine as I was by myself). Good and friendly service. Majority of items vegan. I had the Aubergine and thought it was really good. The home made ice tea and lemonades were good too!

Gys embodies the minimalist trend: the space is clean and tidy, with enough moments of green to remind you it is a vegetarian restaurant. It feels light and airy too: the kind of place which can embody both sophistication for dinner with your partner, or the casual atmosphere you want while having Saturday lunch with friends.
Read moreThe menu is compact (and they have an English version if you don't read Dutch). All the cooked food sounds comforting, but not necessarily comfort food: some of the stews sound very homely and genuine, while the Kapsalon and other dishes are a bit more heavy and hefty. Your pick!
I went with a veganised version of the Kapsalon (which is usually vegetarian): I was told it was the most Dutch menu item and that is why I went with that. I later discovered it stems from kebab (and I have to admit, that had I known that, I would have picked something else). This was in some way a warm salad and that was actually nice. The dish itself was rich and savoury, but not totally bold in flavour. The serving was small and one could argue that prices could be lower, but alas, this is The Netherlands, so these prices are somewhat standard.
Still, if you are veggie and passing by Utrecht, it is definitely worth stopping at Gys: the food is rather good, the decor enjoyable and the location on one of the main roads hard to beat.
Pros: Nice space, on one of the main roads in Utrecht, There are both slightly greasy and clean dishes, The food is tasty: not out of this world but good!
Cons: Portions could be a bit bigger, Prices could be a bit smaller

Read moreThey are quite easy to reach and have a cosy and trendy interior. I adore the ecosystems in the bulbs and the open kitchen that allows you to have a peek.
The food is nice, especially because there are many vegan options and you can opt for a mix platter so you can taste many different dishes.
They have quite some sitting area but still it cab get crowded so if you want to make sure to have a spot with several people, better to make a reservation.

Went for a two course dinner (main meal and dessert) which cost a total of €16 per person. Meals are clearly labelled if vegan, vegetarian, or GF. While this restaurant does have some meat options, it feels like a vegetarian restaurant as most menu items are at least vegetarian if not vegan. (I assume the labelling was accurate--I wasn't able to confirm since my Dutch isn't great.) Fairly affordable restaurant, but not directly in downtown Utrecht and not on a canal. Has patio seating. There is an English menu if you don't read Dutch.

This is a great place for the Vegan traveller. Options are clearly labelled. For evening meal we had vegan burger very well presented with sweet potatoes and tasty. The vegan curry with chick peas was OK but could have been richer and more interesting. However the vegan chocolate mousse more than compensated for this. It was so exquisite and very moorish ... if I could've had the space.

Highly recommended.
And came back Sunday night... had filling vegan Roasted pumpkin and parsnip chips with leafy salad and barley. Tasty!

Very nice atmosphere and servers, with lots of vegan options. I had the small vegan tasting platter for lunch, for which I got half a burger, some 'kapsalon', small curry and bread with guacamole, all for only €7. Everything tasted great, especially the kapsalon with sweet potato. The portion size was a bit too big for me to finish, so I don't know why other reviews are saying the portion sizes are too small for its price. I loved it.

I don't think I had ever tried any food like the plates they were putting out for vegan and the meat eater was happy to nosh alongside us. Quick service and beautiful spot.
Drink options were awesome too, I was able to try a GF lager which i'm always looking to sample as they are hard to come by.
Great work guys. I would move to Utrecht just to be able to enjoy the pleasure again and again.
