A vegetarian’s heaven

This place was really cute and very packed for a Sunday afternoon.

We sat close to the window and watching the snow fall and enjoying our meals.

Everything was done well, I just wish there were more vegan options that weren’t salads. My friend and I were craving something a little heartier, but the quiche and casserole options were only vegetarian, which was a major downvote for us.

If you’re vegetarian, this place would be heavenly, but as a vegan it lacks heartiness.

I’d visit again, but maybe when craving salads, as that’s mainly what was only offered for vegans.

Pros: Many options for vegetarians, The coffee was super tasty, Their use of many vegetables

Cons: No vegan options for quiche or casseroles , Only 1 vegan tofu dish, A little pricey for what was offered

Not worth the price for bland food

We were quite disappointed with this. Almost all the food was very bland except for a few dishes. The other reviewers that gave 3 stars or less were unfortunately right - the food isn’t that good for what you pay. The pesto pastas were sadly boring, same with the lasagna, potatoes, chickpea salad, brussel sprouts, and even the chocolate mousse. The mushroom dishes were all great. The quiche and red pasta were quite good. But for all the variety here, most of it is mediocre or boring. It is sad to see so many places like this so highly rated just because they have so many options.

Also, they still ask for a tip on the machine even though there is no table service. A full plate runs about $40 for food that just isn’t that good. I don’t even want to give it 2 stars but the app forces me to just because it’s all vegetarian. Basically. if you want veg food, go here, but you want GOOD veg food, go elsewhere.

Cons: Waste of money

Just ok

Don’t get the high rating. It’s a crowded buffet restaurant from back in the 1980s. Decent vegan options, but food was meh. I guess it’s for people that like the nostalgia. Ok if you want to go back in time. Felt rushed thru buffet line (crowded) so it was hard to read the labels to determine what was vegan vs. vegetarian. Pay by weight of plate / food.

Pros: vegan options, parking nearby(paid), nice host

Cons: buffet style, mixed the vegan options with vegetarian , pay by plate / food weight

Pay by weight buffet style

So many great vegan options. Very relaxed atmosphere, felt like I was eating a home cooked meal. I was so thrilled with all the vegan options and left extremely satisfied.

Vegan/ Vegetarian buffet

The Green Door in Ottawa offered a cozy, satisfying buffet experience. The ginger noodles had great texture, though I wanted more ginger, while the pesto pasta felt like something you’d make at home— comforting. As a mushroom lover, I was skeptical, but their seasoned mushrooms were surprisingly enjoyable, even if the cold texture might not appeal to everyone.

A big surprise for me was the tempeh. After avoiding it due to a bad first experience, I decided to give it another shot here, and it was incredible—enough to inspire me to try it at home again. The carrot ginger coconut soup was another standout, light and flavourful.

Not every dish impressed, though. The cauliflower curry and the tofu teriyaki stir-fry didn’t stand out. Surprisingly, the cold dishes stole the show with their vibrant, refreshing flavours.

Dessert was the only true letdown. The vegan brownie was dense, sticky, and dry, leaving me wishing I’d chosen one of the pies instead.

Overall, The Green Door is a great spot for a casual meal, especially if you love variety and plant-based options. Arrive early for the best seats, and if you go, skip the brownie—but don’t miss the soup, tempeh and pesto.

Pros: Variety galore

Worth a visit

They serve such a great variety of delicious food, including a huge array of desserts. It can get very crowded - you might have to wait a bit for a table. I have seen people avoid the wait by taking their food to-go instead. Price is by weight of the plate, so it can get pretty expensive. But as far as I'm concerned, it's all worth it for an amazing and unique meal every once in a while.

Vegan Heaven

This place is amazing. There are so many choices and I was so excited to see all of this vegan food that the first few times I left being way overfed. Honestly, there is something for everyone here and the baked goods are amazing too. I usually bring something home because I'm too stuffed for dessert. Im giving 5 stars because the food is just so good but the decor could be updated and modernised a bit.

Pros: Price, Selection

Surprisingly bland

I heard about this restaurant for years before coming here a few months ago. I was surprised at the lack of non- carb options and at the fact that the food was pretty bland.

I would recommend drawing on cultural recipes from traditional vegan or vegetarian peoples to add some excitement to the menu. (Hindu cuisines, Rastafarian cuisines, etc.)

Not a very friendly atmosphere- it seemed a bit stuffy, uppity and pretentious.

The cookies were great though!

Hot, cold, sweet, savoury, spiced, mild.

Fantastic range of options to try. I chose hot food and was happy that even the rice had additional veg mixed in. No dishes stood out as incredible but all were pleasant. With a vegan cheesecake and tip, the total was around $30. Favourite visit in Ottawa was to Peace Garden but there’s wasn’t anywhere near as much choice as here. Green door would be perfect for a group! :)

Pros: Can try smaller portions of various, Informal, Clear labels and instructions

Cons: Tastier food elsewhere for the price

Great healthy veggie food

I loved this restaurant! It's a pay-by-weight buffet with tasty, wholesome plant-based food. Vegans, keep in mind that most of the "heartier" food options (such as lasagna, spanakopita, quiche) and some desserts are vegetarian, i.e. contain egg and/or dairy. They do have an excellent selection of vegan salads and cheesecakes (the caramel chocolate cheesecake is creamy and scrumptious). All vegan options are labelled.

The seating area is bright and airy. Dine-in is more expensive though: it's $3.20/100g for dine-in and $2.90/100g for take-out.

An ottawa go to restaurant

Super great veg/vegan restaurant. I have not been for the buffet yet but have ordered takeout on numerous occasions. Their mains and sides have all been flavourful and love the different options. The VEGAN CHEESECAKE is a must try and will keep you coming back. The staff are very knowledgeable with food handling and everything is marked veg, vegan, egg, dairy, gluten so it makes for an easy dining experience for anyone with allergies.

Pros: Cheesecake , Lots of Options, Knowledge staff
