Don’t miss this!

I have had Gorou on my list for years, and I finally went after making a lunch reservation on a Wednesday a week before. You can specify dietary preferences and restrictions when you make an online reservation, so the chef was prepared to veganize two of the 12 courses that were ovo- or lacto-vegetarian (chawanmushi and cheese & caramel banana roll).

The menu stays pretty consistent, so there’s no pressure to return regularly for the different seasons. But gosh, this is a great spot for a special occasion or just to treat yourself. The chef enjoys playing guessing games with the ten diners seated at the sushi bar to see if folks can correctly answer what ingredients were used in various courses. There are some special items I hadn’t encountered before like the hundred-year mushroom (百年菇) for the fried oyster temaki. (It’s softer than king oyster mushroom, making it better suited to mimicking oysters.)

I added an optional soft-shell crab temaki (NT$80) to try it, which is made with maitake mushrooms (舞菇). Although I was already quite full, I’m glad I tried it. At NT$1,000 10% service fee for the omakase lineup, this place is a steal!

Rare find

The vegan Japanese tasting menu at Gorou masterfully reimagines traditional flavors through a plant-based lens. Standout dishes for me included the delicate white ferula mushroom wrapped in laver and a surprisingly rich “steamed egg” crafted from soy milk. Most courses were enjoyable; however, the recurring use of “vegan mayo” felt excessive - a healthier, cashew-based alternative would be a welcome improvement. I also wasn’t particularly fond of the “banana roll,” which was a bit odd.

Best restaurant in the world???

I don't think there's many restaurants that offers a vegan omakase experience, this is the only one I've ever found and it was DELICIOUS. The chef talked us through the dishes in Chinese so my friend had to translate, probably hard to follow if you don't speak the language. But he was very funny and all the dishes were incredibly well balanced, I cannot recommend this place enough. Very innovative use of ingredients and molecular gastronomy. If you are in Kaohsiung this is a MUST VISIT. I'd give it ten stars if I could.

Pros: Delicious food, Unique experience, Delicious vegan options

Cons: Maybe difficult if you don't speak Chinese

A memorable dining experience

This was such a fantastic dining experience. It's an award-winning restaurant that really deserves the accolades.

The food is so flavourful, the service excellent, and the value incredibly high given the quality. You should reserve ahead as there is limited seating at the bar which is where you want to be to watch the chefs prepare the food and explain/show you the ingredients used (it's all in Chinese, but you get the gist). You get a glass of non-alcoholic wine plus unlimited tea included in the 14-course degustation. What also made me happy was the fact it was nearly all vegan and with the two non-vegan dishes, we weren't 'left out': vegan cheese was used on the banana sushi and silken tofu replaced the egg in the soup.

The staff are so friendly and happy and the whole degustation cost just over $30!
