Buffet with a variety of flavours - Edit
We had the buffet for lunch and liked that the different dishes had different flavours, e.g. cauliflower with cumin, salad with beans and olives or creamy green vegetables. It was much netter than da terra Baixa.

We went in the evening & the waitress was very friendly. We had great expectations from the other reviews & were underwhelmed. While there were many ootions, to me there was nothing that stood out about the food, it felt like pretty standard vegan buffet fare. For example Herman's in Stockholm is amazing vegan buffet. We had the dessert (which is not included in the buffet price), both were good but again not great.

Wonderful vibe, wonderful food - Edit
Gao means high or tall in Mandarin and rice in Vietnamese. The latter is how this wonderful place got its name but I got high on its food. They do a lovely buffet and the staff are great. The owner even made me a dish specially because there were a few options containing tofu and tofu somehow sabotages my feet for days for some strange reason. I’ll include photos. One of which is the seitan steaks in a mushroom sauce with potatoes. In addition to the cold foods in my photos, there were hot foods, soup and a choice of desserts. I had a mango pudding with no added sugar - see photo.

Loooooved it. Thought I was in heaven, for real. So many different dishes with a variety of veggies and mushrooms and legumes and everything so freaking tasty. I wish I could eat here every day (I cant though because I'm just here for vacation).

This was the best restaurant ever! The starters were amazing and very well seasoned. My highlight was the desert: a cinnamon creme brûlée. And everything for 12€! (Only buffet is 9,50€). I can really recommend!

The Best Buffet Ever! - Edit
On October 19, 2023 my friend and I had the most delicious vegan lunch buffet at Gao. We had just finished walking the Camino Portuguese to Santiago de Compostela where good vegan meals are difficult to come by.
Read moreEverything was meticulously prepared and presented. The flavors were light and balanced. There was a table laden with various salads and cold dishes. There was a soup kettle where you could help yourself to a delicious bowl of Portuguese Caldo Verde. Then there was a hot table that featured Seitan with gravy, sauteed greens and chili with beans that you could eat with rice or focaccia. The cost was a reasonable 8.5 euros. We happily paid the extra 2 euros to sample a delicious strawberry cheesecake.
The staff was friendly and welcoming and the service was excellent!

Bastante boa e, para além disso, saudável. Funcionava durante a pandemia à base de menu. No entanto, atualmente funciona à base de buffet, com opções frias e quentes, onde podemos repetir as vezes que quisermos sempre pelo mesmo preço fixo.
Contudo, quinta-feira, sexta-feira e sábado ao jantar, existe a possibilidade de, em vez do buffet, escolhermos ou uma francesinha ou um hambúrguer e, se quisermos, também entradas.
A sobremesa que escolhi (e as opções eram muitas) foi o crumble de maçã com uma bola de gelado. Estava ótimo. Não era nem pouco nem excessivamente doce. Senti que estava bastante equilibrado em termos de doçura.
Escolhi como bebida um sumo natural de laranja e banana. Infelizmente não estava tão doce como desejaria, mas isso depende sempre da fruta e nem sempre se tem essa sorte.
-Atendimento:
Gostei de todos os que conheci que trabalham no restaurante. Foram todos bastante simpáticos e atenciosos.
-Espaço:
Acolhedor e com decoração simples e agradável. Tem muita luz natural e vista para um pequeno pátio.
-Palavras finais:
Gostei imenso da experiência e tenciono voltar para provar as outras sobremesas! E, claro, como fã de francesinha, também a terei de experimentar!

-Food:
Very good and, furthermore, healthy. During the pandemic it functioned through a menu. However, it's currently a buffet, with cold and hot options, where we can repeat as much as we want at the same established price.
Nonetheless, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at dinner, there is the possibility of choosing, instead of the buffet, a francesinha (a traditional Portuguese dish, more precisely, a traditional Porto dish) or a burger, and, if we want, also appetizers.
The dessert I chose (and there were many) was the apple crumble with a scoop of ice cream. It was great and the sweetness was exactly right.
I chose an orange and banana juice. Unfortunately it wasn't as sweet as I wished, but that always depends on the fruit, and we are not always that lucky.
-Staff:
I liked every staff member I met. Everyone was very kind and polite.
-Space:
Welcoming, with a pleasant and minimalist decoration. It has lots of natural light and a view to a small courtyard.
-Final words:
I loved the experience and I intend to return there so I can try the other desserts! And of course, as a fan of francesinhas, I will also have to try one of theirs someday!

Wir sind über happycow auf Gao gestoßen und waren total begeistert. Das Restaurant ist von außen eher unscheinbar, von innen dagegen sehr gemütlich und geschmackvoll eingerichtet. Das Essen (veganes Buffet) war abwechslungsreich und wirklich lecker. Die dort arbeitenden Personen waren alle sehr herzlich und aufmerksam. Wir haben uns wohl gefühlt und würden auf jeden Fall wiederkommen!

We love this place - a firm favourite whenever we land in Porto. It has values beyond the food which radiate through the entire space. The food is without doubt some of the best you'll eat - forget that it's Vegan, that's just an added bonus.

I probably wouldn't have come here had I realised it was a buffet service. It is a nice cosy place with friendly staff. Sitting by the window, you can see the outside space for sunnier warmer days. Still, looking at the seagulls flying overhead made me happy. The food was good overall. However, I wasn't impressed with the seitan bourguignon. Even though I usually don't go for desserts, I did, and the "Leite creme" was superb!

Read moreI've been here more times that I can count over the years and the quality of the food & service never drops - I always leave very happy!
A must visit while in Porto - it's a buffet style restaurant so you can get your own plate and fill it as many times as you want with the starters and main dishes (usually 2 options of main dish), drinks are ordered on the side and so are the deserts (which are also very much worth it)
The space is so beautiful, lots of light and the staff are the nicest
I couldn't recommend it more!
