We loved Fratellos vegan restaurant. We went 2 nights in a row. Food was tasty. The outdoor seating was perfect (especially now). Will definitely go back.

So good I had to go back! - Edit
I foolishly only allowed myself 3 days in Cuenca, but this place was so good I went back twice in that time! The staff were very friendly and I wanted to try everything! My favorite was the nachos and desserts :)

Nice atmosphere, mediocre food - Edit
The location and atmosphere of the restaurant is great. Outdoor seating by a stream/river, indoor options available as well. The server we had only spoke Spanish.
Read moreThe food needs improvement. I ordered their ‘Potas Fratello’ (‘gluten free’ fries with toppings), and falafel. My friends ordered the vegan hot dog, burger, bbq wings, & burrito. The falafel came out first and it looked like a veg sausage cut into thirds and fried; we later find out that it was just the ‘hotdog’ cut into thirds. A very poor attempt at falafel; dry and greasy. The toppings included with the fries was refried beans, potato ‘cheese’, chickpeas, sautéed mushrooms, peppers & onions w/ a side salad. Sounds tasty right?
I wish I would have taken a picture of how minuscule the toppings were, it was so disappointing. There was the smallest drizzle of translucent ‘cheese’ (2-3 tbsp), 2 tbsp refried beans, and about 1/4 cup of peppers & onions, etc. with a giant serving of dry french fries.
The best part was dessert. The ice cream was delicious, and brownie was fairly tasty.
Pros: All vegan options
Cons: Greasy, dry, too salty, Not creative, too many french fries, Not enough toppings on certain dishes

Lots of plant based meat and nice garden area - Edit
If you are looking for meat substitutes this seems to be the right place in Cuenca. There are many different plant based burger, burritos, etc. available. Good taste and freshly prepared. Just the tortilla bread was a little bit dry. Nice and quiet garden area close to the river.

Vegan is a lot better than this - Edit
I love vegan food because it's very tasty, the best about vegan food is that being vegan is being creative with plant based food, and that is what makes vegan food so amazing, but going to Fratello was a huge dissapointment. They only serve fake animal products based on plants. it only reminded me the times when I ate meat, without the full taste of it, let's clarify this, if I wanted to feel the hamburger or chorizo's taste, I'd go and eat a real hamburger or chorizo, not a fake one.

Pros: friendly, nice place
Cons: lack of imagination to make food, junk food but made from plants

Cute spot, but needs to improve food - Edit
I really had high hopes for this place, but was unfortunately pretty disappointed in the food. We ordered the seitan lomo and a pizza. The pizza was very doughy and didn't have any kind of vegan cheese substitute...very hard to eat after awhile. Very glad that more cities in South America have vegan options, just hope they improve food quality.

Great vegan food - Edit
I have been here twice and both time were good. The portion sizes are big especially for the starters (the first time we ordered way too much food). There is outdoor seating overlooking the river and a nice fire to keep you warm if it’s cold. The food is really tasty but the second time we visited I was a little disappointed that the salad didn’t come with more vegetables and it could have done with a side of vegetables. The pizza is good and the BBQ steak sandwich was great. This is a great place to go for a meal out but if your craving something a little more heathy it’s probably not the place for you.

Delicious vegan food - Edit
I was pleasantly surprised with my meal at Fratello. I ordered the hot dog with fries, and my friend ordered the hamburger with fries. The hot dog was absolutely delicious, as was the hamburger. The fries were seasoned with herbs and had an amazing flavour! The meals came out very quickly, and the staff were super friendly. I would highly recommend visiting Fratello whilst in Cuenca.

Vegan paradise - Edit
I wish I stayed in Cuenca longer to go back to Fratello Vegan! It's a bit out of the city centre but worth it - we had lunch in a lovely and peaceful garden overlooking the river. There were a lot of dishes to choose from - Ecuadorian food, Mexican cuisine, tex mex, and even some French desserts like the crepes Suzette! We had the burger and fries, tomato soup and salad. Everything was fresh, homemade and tasty.

SO HAPPY I WENT!! - Edit
I spent the day exploring the city with people who were NOT interested in vegan food and almost didn't go but I'm SOO glad I did. The owner was so kind, informative and super patient with me. I had a long trip ahead of me the next day so I ordered both dinner & breakfast AND lunch for the next day. Got wings, potatoes, a crepe and a crepe. The owner even brought out ice cream for me to try as I waited. Place is located beside a river & is gorgeous. Total vegan restaurant in LA vibes. Must-go in Cuenca.

Fantastic Find! - Edit
This place is a little out of the way but it was worth the walk.
Read moreAll food is vegan. They offer crepes, "nutella", bbq chick'n wings, nachos, coffee, artesanal beer, waffles and many other things.
I had the crepes with nutella, strawberries and cream and it was very much appreciated after the lack of vegan sweets available. The nachos were also delicious, not exactly the "normal" type of nachos but they were good.
The only let down was the coffee, I don't know if they use more water rather than frothed milk but it was lacking body and was watery to drink.
Make the effort to find this place and you will not be sorry!
Pros: Great portion sizes, Yummy dessert, Good variety
Cons: Very average coffee, A little outside of the main area

Hidden gem on the banks of the Tomebamba - Edit
A bit outside of the old town lies this beautiful restaurant. It has outdoor seating right next to the Timebamba and you have a beautiful view of the river while eating - it can get a bit fresh though, bring a jacket. At 5pm I still got the lunch menu which was good but not extraordinary. The water melon juice and vanilla ice cream stood out positively. The waffles and crepes other people were eating looked awesome - next time.

Only vegan restaurant in town! - Edit
Fratello is off to a great start. I met the chef/owner and his sister while I was there and they recently became vegan and decided to change over their meat-serving restaurant over to a vegan oasis!
Read moreI think it will take some time for them to work out all of the kinks, but when they do, they're going to have a rockstar restaurant on their hands that will be known as the first ever all-vegan restaurant in Cuenca.
Food was good and there are some value items on the menu as well. Location is prime, right by the river, although a bit out of the center of town. Right near the start of the river walk in Cuenca.
They also serve vegan ice cream!
Pros: All-Vegan, River View Seating Available, Fresh
