Great food, huge menu, good location - Edit
We dined here three times during our vacation and it was always good. The patacones appetizer is huge, the burgers are great and I loved the buffalo cauliflower tacos. For some reason the vegetable burrito was my least favorite. Just cooked vegetables wrapped up. But if you are in the area this casual, local spot is worth a stop.

We ate here on our last night and wish we had found it sooner. We had smoothies and coffee which were all really good. We had the cauliflower tacos, chilli and burrito all were extremely tasty and filling. The price here was also very good, especially for the quality and quantity.

Veggie Burgers & Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos - Edit
AMAZING veggie burgers and buffalo cauliflower tacos. Cute little space in the center of Alajuela, with indoor/outdoor seating and good wifi. There's a secure parking lot across the street that's only 600 colones per hour. The staff is super sweet and the service is good :)

Good in theory - Edit
Went to El Chante twice during my stay in SJ. The first time I got the chalupas which were alright but tasted as if the pico had gone bad. The people I was eating with had the cauliflower buffalo tacos. These were tasty and so I thought we may as well hit the place up again before leaving being as it was all vegan. I got a pad thai that had hard noodles and a strange sauce, I couldn’t finish it. Good in theory, some tasty items, cool vibes, but menu needs some reworking. Some of the staff could be quite rude and wanted to charge my friend for a to-go box one night and not charge the other night (maybe just a one-off staff member?). We also ordered the ceviche as an appetizer and never received it which was disappointing since we wanted to try this popular dish.

Exceptional! - Edit
You could basically close your eyes, throw a dart at the menu, order whatever it lands on, and not be disappointed.
Read moreThis is one of those places that manages to find the perfect balance between whole, healthy, foods; creative, made-from-scratch recipes; and mouthwatering flavors. As if that weren't enough, the decor is charming and the service is great.

Not to miss in Alajuela! - Edit
What a relief to arrive to that lovely place! The food was delicious, so were the home made beverages. We ate there, and went back the following day for take-out for our flight back home (a suggestion! You make everyone around jealous of your meal).

Good food bad service - Edit
I was very excited to have this vegan place in such a not vegan-friendly neighbourhood. We didn't have enough time to try more than one dish from the menu and a smoothie but both were great. I was disappointed they didn't have any dessert I could take with me on my flight. Menu is only in Spanish even though most of the customers are tourists (it's less than 3 kilometres from the international airport). The guy who was serving us was very rude and impatient. He wasn't eager to answer any questions about food (we didn't ask more than 3 questions so there was no reason to be so annoyed). It was lunch time and there were only me and my boyfriend and another European couple in the whole restaurant. The couple next to us used their phones to translate the menu because the waiter wasn't keen to explain them anything. I'm not happy to give 3 stars to the only vegan restaurant in the area but they really need to improve the service and print vegan menu. The situation where the waiter is annoyed by customers asking about the food is unacceptable for me.

Friendly staff and delicious food. I had the vegan burrito with salad and it was amazing. They also happily boxed it up to go for me as I had to catch a bus. I'd definitely go again.

Understaffed - Edit
This pleasant restaurant offers an attractive vegan menu. I had a portobello burger. I didn't read the menu carefully, the burger turned out to be a portobello mushroom between a bun with fixings. I would have preferred a burger. I would have ordered dessert, but waited a long time without getting any attention, so I skipped dessert. Ordering and getting my order was quick, but I was the only customer at that time. The place was never crowded, nevertheless the two staff and kitchen people had more than they could handle. Be prepared to wait.
