Not So French Fancy - Edit
A smattering of Gallic verse upon a glass partition, and the hopeful placement of ‘Le’ in front of the word Corniche, a French restaurant does not this make. However, whatever shortcomings this place may have in terms of its branding, it more than compensates for it with its output.
Read moreMy initial inspection of vast breakfast spread gave me instant solace that this was going to be nothing but glorious as I spied two, off-white sentinels perched on the cereal section: soy and almond milk. The amount of hassle that is alleviated by having these freely available, rather than being sequestered away behind closed doors, makes the world of difference to my overall enjoyment and to the workload of the staff; it’s a win-win.
This, delightfully, was just the tip of the positivity iceberg, as dish after dish was simply excellent. The hash browns, though a little anaemic in appearance, were sensational, the idli -combined with the coconut chutney- were a triumph, and zaatar manakish was superb. The highly unexpected overachiever of the day though was the sautéed mushrooms. Often these are merely an auxiliary filler to the rest of the offerings, but here they had been treated with care and attention; their umami richness and, dare I say it, their meaty quality shone through.
The sheer breadth of available options coupled with impressive levels of quality made this a truly fabulous, and eminently repeatable, endeavour.
