Great place to go with non-vegans - Edit
The restaurant was in the basement of a building, relatively easy to find. The staff and service were all nice and I was able to order even without speaking Japanese.
Read moreThey offer sets were you have the choice of deli options, both warm and cold options. I went with non-vegans and they even enjoyed the food. We also ordered the parfait and cheesecake which were vegan and really good.
Pros: vegan options
Cons: expensive

Pleasant surprise! - Edit
You can definitely tell you’re in one of the ‘nice’ areas of Tokyo here. Although in a department store basement level, chaya is a lovely little restaurant. I think the menu must change seasonally as I wasn’t able to find on the menu a tempeh burger that I’d read about in another review.
Read moreNonetheless, I had mix plate where you choose three ‘deli items’ (hot or cold), and it’s served with a small soup, brown rice, and a vegetable/fruit juice shot.
All in all this was really tasty! I wasn’t expecting too much (I don’t think the menu really ‘sells’ the meals), but I enjoyed everything.
You can also buy cakes and other items to take away. A great find.

Lovely! - Edit
Went for lunch here today. Lovely staff but not much English spoken, which is fine of course but just be prepared if you don’t speak much Japanese! They also kind of insist you have a set menu for lunch here which is a little annoying but I chose the vegan avocado and kale taco bowl with a side of deep fried soy cutlet (tasted like fish!) and a delightful little strawberry shortcake for desert which was divine. Really enjoyable and would definitely come back. The menu is mostly vegan as others say, I also visited the FAQs on their website and they make it clear that the only thing they use is fish in some dishes, I.e no other meat, dairy, egg, etc.

5 stars - Edit
Would give 5 stars if possible! The breakfast is really delicious! Only a few food items contain fish, it’s clearly labeled. A lot of stuff is gluten-free, that’s pretty hard to find in Tokyo

Love it! - Edit
I frequent the theaters in this area and love having this restaurant just a short walk away. It is located in the basement of Chanter, and recently underwent renewal. Very healthy and yummy. Desserts are good too. A bit expensive but worth it for the convenience.

lovely hidden space - Edit
the space was quite pretty for a spot in a mall basement with lovely wood decorations and friendly staff.
Read moreI had the daily lunch set which came with perfectly cooked brown rice, a salad, a cup of the soup of the day (minestrone), and three small portions of their daily specials - today an Edamame patty (delicious!), a seaweed salad, and garlic broccoli.
the place is 100% vegetarian (and seemed vegan too but I didn't ask) except for their one daily fish option.
the desserts were stunning but we didn't save room. think matcha adzUki soymilk tiramisu!
Pros: healthy, friendly

One of the best restaurants in Tokyo! - Edit
I have been to all three of the Chaya Macrobiotics restaurants and I have to say I think they are some of the best restaurants in Tokyo. They really understand vegan substitutions (unlike many Japanese restaurants) and their vegan desserts are to die for!
Read moreThe only non-vegan items on their menu are fish (since it's a macrobiotic place).
If you're looking for a place with American- or European-type food with a Japanese flair, look no further! They also have some nice packaged snacks and treats that you can buy for the road.
This particular location in Hibiya is a nice lunch spot and is close to the train station.
Pros: Great food, Amazing desserts, Healthy

lovely vegan food - Edit
I've been going to this place for several years and I think their vegan desserts are some of the best in Tokyo. The menu is 95% macrobiotic vegan; 1 dish (clearly marked) contains fish. Another reason I enjoy this place is that it's nearly impossible to find a place in the Ginza area that isn't expensive meat-based cuisine. Chaya has a fairly large menu of both seasonally-changing sets and a la carte items as well as deli items. I recently had tofu "omu-kare" (omelet + curry) with brown rice and it was nice to be able to try some vegan Japanese comfort food. I also enjoy their avocado & teriyaki soy 'chicken' sandwich. The desserts are highly-recommended. The restaurant is located in the basement of Hibiya Chanter shopping mall, near Hibiya station. (If you're asking for directions, note that Chanter is pronounced "shan-tay" as in the French verb; otherwise locals may not know what you're asking for.)
