Pros: goede menu keuzes, relaxte sfeer, betaalbaar

Cons: druk

Teleurstellend. Onbeschoft

Cons: Onbeschoft

A slice of a slab

The fact that De Plak is ran collectively earns it two stars already. Another star for having made a step in the right direction (albeit the notion that dairy&eggs are somehow better, or resulting in less violation of someone's rights than flesh, is a deceptive one, to say the least). Of course, to my understanding, there has been a considerable backlash or rather swooping in of various trolls after their 'transition'. And it wasn't even a transition all the way.

I'm torn between giving 3 and 4 stars, because it feels odd giving above average rating to any place that turns direct results of animal exploitation into profit, even if it is a solidarity or charity-based enterprise. I shall, in the end, give it 3 stars based on my limited number of visits which were always nice on the human level, however, the food itself was slightly underwhelming, considering the hype. Or rather - not to the extent of being disappointing, but not above average, either.
It would get 4 stars if (either/or) was not serving animal products and the food would live up to its hype. And would get 5 stars if both of the above.

That's odd coming from a fella wearing one of their (awesome) t-shirts, right? Well, i've decided to step up my genuine honest ratings game and not succumb to the toxic positivity mentality.

Pros: the concept & idea behind it, authenic / genuine people

Affordable place for healthy food

I had the famous 'vegan kaasgehakt' and a vegan kokosroomtaart. Portions are big and superhealthy. I expected more from the 'vegan kaasgehakt' but It wasn't something special. I think the vegan cordon blue from the Albert Heijn is better. But it wasn't bad. Maybe my expectations were too high from the reviews. Nice terrace and located opposite of Bhalu. Usually about dinner time indoor seats are occupied but some people wait outdoor and ask to move indoor when a table is free. I stayed outdoor because it was a bit too overcrowded indoor. Because I saw that they had whiskey and vegan options (rare combination) I wanted a vegan Irish coffee but they didn't have vegan whipped cream, only dairy whipped cream. For the food itself it would give three starts but because of the excellent price/portion value an extra star. You don't leave hungry here.

Affordable food but nothing outstanding

Plenty of vegan options here! I would describe it as affordable "eetcafe" food: simple meals, great portions. Just don't expect too much of the food, it was alright but nothing special really. I had the tofu/tempeh main dish. It was fried and served with some sort of sweet ketjap sauce, cooked peas, sweet rice with cinnamon (a bit weird..) and two decent side salads. Staff, vibe and outside terrace were very nice!

Lekkere burgers

Pros: Prima aanbod

Cons: Niet geweldig

Great place

Run by a collective, the Plak is a really cool place with really good food. Especially their staple 'kaasgehakt', which they also serve vegan! The inside of their restaurant is also something to behold :)

Pros: Vegan kaasgehakt, Cool wallpaper, Collective

Worth 5 star 💚

Ok, so they serve meat(bio) but they have the best vegan food, with lots of veggies, so they deserve 5 stars in my opinion. And the ambiance is one of the best in town! Also great party's here in non-corona times.

Pros: Lots of veggies! Great ambiance.

Cons: Non

Quirky Café

Popped in here for a quick lunch and loved the quirkiness of the place, thankfully they spoke English too! 🙏 There was a couple of vegan options on the menu, two burgers which we went for. Hubby had the cheese burger and I had the curry tofu burger. He forgot that you actually have to order fries separately which would’ve cost us another €3. To be honest, we found them a little basic, ok but not the best we’ve had. The cheese one was the better of the two.

Great atmosphere, great food

Café de Plak is well-known for its 'kaasgehakt' (literally cheese mince) - a very well-seasoned cheeseball. I used to love it as a vegetarian. Turns out they have a vegan version now. It tasted very good! I was afraid it would have too much of the artificial, plastic-y taste and sickly gooey texture that store bought vegan cheese tends to have, but it wasn't like that at all. It's cheesy, but not too cheesy, well-seasoned, and the crust is wonderfully crispy.

There were two more vegan mains, plus vegan starters and deserts, but I didn't try them.

Mains are served with two types of veggies (warm and cold). Ordering a side of fries (with vegan mayo), rice, or the potato dish of the day (I had a sauerkraut mash) is recommended.

Friendly, helpful staff and great atmosphere!

Mind you, it is ALWAYS crowded around dinnertime. You'll probably have to wait at the bar for a bit, but it's worth the wait.

Pros: Good, affordable food, Knowledgeble, friendly staff, Good atmoshpere

Cons: Always crowded

Amazing "cheeseballs"

Cosy restaurant that serves appr. 3 vegan dishes.

We went there for their famous "kaasgehaktburger" ("cheeseballs"). Mention you want the vegan option. They taste amazing and are served with a tasty salad and well seasoned potatoes. You can also choose rice and fries with vegan mayo.

Nice vibe, you can sit both outdoors and indoors.

Friendly place

For all the vegan options they have see the review below this one, it's explained there in great detail.

Service was very friendly, food was OK. The burger was quite tasty, but was put on a bed of a few days old ruccola with no dressing or anything.

Prices are pretty good, 7.50 for a big burger in the city center is decent. The place is also very relaxed, andwelcoming to a diverse crowd.

Cons: Not completely veggie/vegan

Vegan lunch, dinner and dessert

People come here for the quality of the food, affordable prices, no-nonsense atmosphere and friendly staff. The place is popular and busy but the staff is quick and efficient managing to keep up with the pace.

For lunch there is the big vegan curried tofu burger with jalapeños (I always ask for extra vegan mayo) and tomato-koriander saus. Also the soups are mostly vegan and you can order organic bread with hummus or olives as a side dish (or in the evening as a starter). The coffee is served with Tiny Tony's (the blue are vegan) and cappuccino or Latte can be made with soy milk. For something sweet you can go for the carrot cake or vegan ice cream.

In the evening the three vegan options are 1. the salad with tofu, bread and hummus or 2. the tofu tempeh skewer or 3. the vegan cheeseball. Now and then there's a vegan curry or falafel offered on the weekly menu (so check the black board).

The tofu tempeh skewer and the vegan cheeseball are served with veggies, two salads and a choice of either fries with vegan mayo, rice or potatoes. So it's a good amount of food. Although I 'm really full after one meal I don't care and always go for dessert!

There is always a vegan ice cream (sorbet or coconut ice cream, ask the staff what's available at the moment) that can be served with vegan chocolate saus. Or you could go for the homemade vegan carrot cake. Last week there was also a really tasty vegan salty chocolate cake with raspberry on the menu because the chefs at de Plak do love their vegans.
