Bob’s Your Uncle - Edit
For those who may be oblivious to the titular British idiom (and I hazard there may be a few), it means that "it's done". Usually it’s used to conclude a task, indicating that an undertaking is complete and that said endeavour was simple and successful. Essentially, what I’m trying to convey – in my usual convoluted way – is that it was excellent.
Read moreThe first of many positives I encountered was that the eponymous owner was in the building on my visit, and I had the pleasure of him taking my order. An entirely agreeable and friendly fellow, he had exactly the right response when I started to rattle off my desired items: disbelief tinged with apprehension. All credit to him; he could quite easily have not said anything and simply nodded, but his concern for my wellbeing from such a large order was rather heartening. Entirely unnecessary, of course, but lovely nonetheless.
From here, it just kept getting better and better – even the drink, an old-school cream soda, was a sheer delight. From the more traditional elements such as the on-point mushy peas to the enormous, sinfully good potato fritters to the more exotic creations on the Caribbean-inspired menu like the deceptively moist lentil burger and the beyond brilliant bakes, there wasn’t any one item that I could truly fault. Sure, I could have taken umbrage with the fact the spicy battered chips didn’t carry much actual heat, but they were doubly deep-fried, crispy, crunchy sticks of awesomeness, so any shortcomings on their ability to trouble the Scoville scale were permissible.
Finding this place has finally filled a gaping, chippy-shaped void in my life and has given me yet another excuse for not having to return to Blighty.
