Fantastic from the time we got there - Edit
We had an absolutely wonderful dinner on a Monday night at Avant Garden. Our waitress was so sweet, she was Italian and had gone to school in Nebraska of all places because she was athlete, fun to talk to her, and the food was delicious. I had steeled myself for an average meal because of some of the reviews but I was very glad to be proven wrong. My husband and I shared the nachos and the goulash, they were really delicious. We ate with two non-vegans who also really enjoyed their meal. They have an extensive beer and wine list, which we also enjoyed topped off by Apple pie w/ice cream. So good!!!

Must visit if in Maastricht - Edit
Loved everything about our meal here. We sat outside at a cosy table people watching. The menu was diverse with lots of options but we were pleased with our choices of penne arriabata & meatballs & traditional Limburg stew. The service was really pleasant & helpful & had a relances & chilled vibe.

Don't get the Caesar salad! - Edit
This was our most disappointing meal in the Netherlands. The Caesar salad was not a Caesar salad, yet advertised as such. A Caesar salad has a creamy dressing. This one had a mustard vinaigrette. It had small flakes of vegan chicken and bacon and the croutons were those cheap store-bought ones you get from AH. For a €16 salad, I expected a lot more.
Read moreThe sour mushroom stew with mash and salad (dressed exactly the same way as the Caesar) was okay but nothing special. They need to do better.

Good food and a nice place - Edit
There are not a lot of fully vegan places in Maastricht, so this is already a plus. There are several options, we went with the mushroom stew and mushroom burger. Both were delicious! The tap beer is also very good indeed. The place looks lovely & the waitresses are super nice.

Disappointing - Edit
Even though the restaurant was almost empty, the waitress was not coming outside and i had to go inside to order (which isn't common) and another woman waited even longer to pay. I orderd the "Avant Garden Salad" with blue "cheese", only to find out it was replaced with "feta" which no one mentioned. The salad itself was totally fine, but nothing special at all. It was also rather expensive. I think there are many better places in Maastricht.

Expensive for what you get - Edit
Maybe I chose the wrong meal, but I got the avocado salad and it was something like €15 for mostly lettuce. It was very tasty but I was still hungry afterwards and had to go to the supermarket to get more food. I hoped for that price there’d be more avocado and other ingredients. It was just too pricey for what I got. I would give it another chance though. The atmosphere was nice and the other menu items looked good.

Fully vegan restaurant in the city centre of Maastricht - Edit
I had a very tasteful vegan three courses dinner tonight. I started with the Avant Garden salade with as highlights vegan blue cheese, walnuts en slices apple. As main course the mushroom stew in local style with fries, after which I couldn't try the apple pie or affogato anymore, just too much... The vegan Irish Coffee was a great alternative. I recommend this restaurant highly for dinner. The service was fast and friendly, but didn't speak Dutch.

Decent vegan lunch - Edit
We were there for a late lunch. With only 4 tables at the same time, food was OK. Carpaccio was a good concept. Samosa I'm pretty sure where frozen and the "curry sauce" to deep them was kerrie ketchup from the store.
Read moreOverall a OK experience. Friendly and attentive staff.
Would I come back? Hmmm, I don't think so.
Pros: Everything is vegan, Friendly staff, The option to seat in the terrace

Excellent vegan Dutch/Limburgish food - Edit
I had the zoervleisj (Limburgish stew but made with oyster mushrooms), frites and a small salad. Each was delicious. I also had an alcohol free Dutch Trappist beer called La Trappe Epos that was great. Nice location in the old city with some tables outside to eat and people watch. Highly recommended!

Three courses for €32.50 - Edit
Lots of restaurants in Maastricht seem to be closed on a Monday so we were delighted to find somewhere that was not only open but also 100% vegan! With mains running at around €20 and starters & desserts at around €10 each, we were tempted by the offer of three courses for €32.50.
Read moreI had the meatballs to start followed by the local zoervleisj mushroom stew & an affogato while my wife had the celeriac carpaccio, the truffle pasta & a big slice of apple pie. Other options included burgers, goulash and assorted salads & pasta dishes. Everything we tried was pretty good without being amazing. A good choice in a city without too any vegan eateries.
Pros: 100% vegan, Relaxed ambiance, Good menu choices
Cons: Not enough toilets!

Cosy atmosphere, good lunch selection - Edit
I've been here a few times now and I'd say the lunch menu is better than their dinner menu. Their bagels/sandwiches are really good, and so are the soups and desserts. While I like the dinner options, I agree with some of the other reviews pointing out it's quite expensive for what you get. The vibe is great, all the furniture seems to be second-hand and the interior design is really cute. Service is good, really friendly staff, however, they tend to be quite busy and possibly understaffed, so just keep that in mind! Definitely recommend going here for lunch and trying their desserts as well😄located in a nice area of Maastricht.

I wanted to like it more than I did - Edit
I went here with a vegetarian and an omnivore, and we were all a bit disappointed. While it's great that there is a fully vegan restaurant, the food wasn't necessarily anything extraordinary.
Read moreService was great, but we waited about 45 minutes for our dishes (the place was quite full, in their defense). But when the food came out it was disappointing. The mushrooms they use seem to be canned, as they were rather gummy. We tried the local mushroom stew which was incredibly sweet and served without the fries it was supposed to come with. For €21, we expected something better. The burger was just okay, and the Caesar salad was just alright as well. All in all, the food was fine, yet not worth the hefty price and the long wait.
The decor is great, and would definitely come back for dessert!
Pros: fully vegan, waiters are friendly, great ambiance
Cons: expensive, mediocre food, long wait

Fantastic spot, ok food. - Edit
Beautiful place, perfect vibe/atmosphere. Serves decent but kinda pricey bar food. Too bad it was too cold inside and the waitress was clearly just there for the paycheck. Pretty much the only vegan place in Limburg so gotta support. Pie and coffee were good!

Eindelijk een veganistisch alternatief in Maastricht! - Edit

Tasty diner & average service - Edit
We had enjoyed our dinner at the other branch, Breakaway so wanted to try out Avant garden as well.
Read moreThe place is a lot bigger and some dishes on the menu are the same. We recognise the previous comments, staff is limited and some not so hospitable(seeing when dishes can be cleaned etc). But with only 3 people as far as we could see. One chef in the kitchen and 2 in the restaurant. Impressive that the chef managed to get all these dishes out.
The menu is a bit confusing with the menu of a seasonal 3 course menu but that was just the option to combine any starter and main from the menu. Also it was unclear what the desserts were.
Also interesting that there were 3 soups as the day soup. With only one chef I wonder about the freshness of everything as this is not needed.
The starters were a bit disappointing. We had the tomato soup, which tasted okay but the bread was not that special. The samosa was tasty.
As mains we had the fall salad and the mushroom pasta. Both Tasty but not that special. Also the salad was listed as being served with blue cheese but it was not blue cheese, rather a brie replacement.
As a dessert we had a piece of chocolate cake, okay but a bit dry.
All in all I would focus on a few good seasonal dishes and try to improve service. Also things like cleaning the toilet etc.
