tofu benedict is to die for - Edit
during a short vacation in SLC, my husband and I had breakfast twice here, and also got takeout to eat on the plane ride back home. the tofu benedict is SO GOOD, the tempeh bacon is mind blowing and the flavor combo is on point! everything else was also super delicious and everything you’d want from a diner.
Read moretakeout was great as well, we got the chickn sandwich, tenders w barbecue sauce, and the vertical reuben and everything was packed very thoughtfully since the staff knew it was for a flight. great service!!!

Mindblowingly good, savored every single bite - Edit
Wow, I understand now why it’s top rated. This so far would also be my number 1 recommendation for SLC. Not only is the food outstanding and so very well-flavored and the right kind of salty, the service was so lovely. That plus the quite authentic diner setup and atmosphere made this whole brunch an outstanding experience. I would so love to return and try pretty much everything on the menu.
Read moreWe had the backyard barbecue platter, the La Mesa breakfast plate and the highly recommended biscuits and gravy. Both platters were fire ❤️🔥 crispy potatoes, Mac and cheese with nutritional yeast, perfectly roasted veggies, amazing mash and gravy, the wings and coleslaw 😭 I’ll be dreaming of this, that’s for sure. Come here!
They have so many cool themed nights, openly support other vegan businesses in the city. This place reached my heart space and I would come here so often would I live here.
Pros: Backyard bbq platter, Atmosphere and service, Mindset

Outstanding- A Must in SLC 😍 - Edit
We finally found a vegan, all American diner! We were over the moon about all the amazing options and expected to be blown away by the food via all the great reviews. They did not disappoint! The service was excellent, the food was perfectly balanced, authentic and true to its roots (thinking soul food). Everything was well cooked, beautifully seasoned, and paired well. We had 0 complaints and only wish our stomachs could take more. I would return every day if I could. What a gift and a gorgeous experience.

Good Diner Style Vegan food - Edit
So tonight I went to the vertical diner for dinner. The food is very good. It may not be the healthiest in the world, (there were healthier options there to choose from if you wanted that) but it was satisfying for somebody who wants plant base Comfort Food. The menu was quite extensive. There were burgers, salads, eggs, pastas, chicken, wings, etc. I had the buffalo chickun tigers they were really really good.. but was disappointed because they were so cheap on the sauce (only a little of sauce at the bottom of the little basket ..but the flavor was good.
Read moreFor the main course I had the chicken and potatoes with gravy. It was very good a little bit too salty for my taste..but it’s probably supposed to be a bit salty. The dinner came with roasted brussels sprouts and broccoli that was fried in a butter type flavor sauce./oil. The brussels sprouts and broccoli were definitely a five out of five stars, although I felt a little guilty because they were a little bit oily.
The server was sweet, but the only thing that bothered me a little was that I felt like she was rushing me.
She kept coming to the table every couple minutes and asked me can I get you something else? Can I get you something else? How is everything? Is everything OK. Can I get you something else? She even interrupted me while I was answering an important text to ask me an again.
It was really annoying and I couldn’t even relax even a little . Let me take a bite or two before you ask me how is everything.
For me it was way too much.
I felt like I was being rushed.
If I was in a mad rush hurry, it would’ve been great( like at breakfast time) if you want to eat and get out in 5 minutes..but for dinner I want to relax a little bit. It was early in the evening so it wasn’t like they were closing anytime soon, but maybe she just was trying to turn the tables quickly or maybe she’s just used to going at light speed. But for me it ruined the experience.
Either way vertical diner is good food for both vegans and non vegans to enjoy 100% plant based menu. It’s definitely worth a try.. but just know that it’ is not all the healthiest menu if you’re trying to avoid salt and added oils, but if you’re looking for comfort food or heavy food, this is definitely the place for you. I hope you enjoy.
Personally I won’t be back.

Love the classic diner feel. Really great service, food was delicious. I had to try the gf pancakes. They had a grainy consistency, probably wouldn’t get them again, but super appreciate them having the gf option.

Amazing! - Edit
This place is so good we visited twice in less than 24 hours! The atmosphere is interesting with some leftover tones of a former Asian restaurant, and if you come in with an appetite, they will take care of that due to the generous portions! Our favorites were the pancakes, their famous “chicken” bites, mac & cheese bites, and the Tofu Benedict that was a monthly special. A must-try when in SLC! #Veganuary

Retro Vibes, Delicious Vegan Eats, and Exceptional Service at Vertical Diner in Salt Lake City - Edit
I had a wonderful dining experience at Vertical Diner today. The welcoming atmosphere and retro-style ambiance immediately drew me in, and I felt so comfortable being in a fully vegan restaurant. It is such a relief to enjoy a meal without worrying about accidental non-vegan ingredients, which made me feel like a “normal” person for once.
Read moreThe wait staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, and the food arrived promptly. Everything was absolutely delicious. The Park City IPA was the perfect complement to the Moby Burger I ordered—it truly put the crown on top of an already excellent meal.
I am definitely going back and highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a fantastic vegan dining experience!

Vertical Diner continues to impress with its creative and tasty vegan options, making it a great spot for everyone, vegan or not. - Edit
It’s been a few years since I last visited Vertical Diner, and I’m thrilled to see it’s still around and serving unbelievable food! Our visit was a bit of a challenge since we brought two non-vegans with us, but we were confident they would find something they enjoyed. They each chose different forms of pancakes and absolutely loved them.
We started with the Mac and Cheeze Bites—these were so fun and delicious! Imagine mac and cheese hidden in a bite-sized coating, definitely a winner.
I opted for the New American Steak Scramble, which was fantastic.
Our non-vegan friends went for the Sweet Stack Pancakes, and they were not disappointed.
The last entrée we tried was the Chikun Sandwich with a side of mac and cheese. Everything was a winner and absolutely delicious.
I almost forgot, how can we not go to a vegan restaurant and try a dessert. Today we got to the carrot cake, and the fudge brownie both topped with monkeywrench vanilla ice cream. It was a tough decision, but I would have to say the carrot cake was the stand out out of these two.
Pros: Consistently good food, Breakfast served all day, Incredible service

Update: - Edit
Update: The Pancakes and Breakfast burrito is AMAZING. the Joaquin Phoenix the interior vibes aren’t great; but for takeout or the more breakfast foods vs burgers it’s so so good!
Read moreOld Review: I came in with the highest of expectations, considering the phenomenal reviews of the restaurant. The inside had a strange stale smell, and the decor was that of a slightly run town denny’s.
I ordered the Joaquin Phoenix, partially because of the phenomenal name, partially because it was highly rated.
The sandwich was probably a 5.5/10. It had probably 4 or 5 ingredients and was incredibly dry. It was a very very basic item. Whereas something like “Proper Burger” down the road has complex, fine tuned flavors, this was more or less an elementary school cafe sandwich making subway look advanced. It alright, but not necessarily worth the price or the hype for what you get, and the slightly depressing atmosphere. I really wish I could say better things, but that was my experience.
Perhaps other things on the menu could have been better, but there is still the atmosphere of the place to consider.
