Mixed messages, but all good - Edit
After a few days of travelling, I've experienced Nagoya as a problematic city when it comes to vegan restaurants. The number of vegan restaurants is low and those available have odd opening hours, require reservations or are otherwise fickle. And when you're hungry, you don't want to check social media to see if the chef is having a good or a bad day. "Vegetiger" is a welcome exception to this trend. They have steady, predictable and long opening hours.
Read moreBut once inside, this vegan tiger sends the visitor mixed messages. The walls are plastered with rock'n'roll posters from the 1960s and 1970s on top of vegan flyers. Then there's a kangaroo corner as well as the odd black and white portrait of an actress. The menu sends mixed messages as well. Vegetiger seems to serve any cuisine but Japanese.
I chose one of the Indian set plates and quickly found out it's merely Indian inspired. The taste is very different from a similar menu in an Indian restaurant, but in many respects it's better! Vegetiger gives its own unique twist on Indian food with different herbs and spices. The plate offers a wide variety in ingredients and flavours, which makes it interesting and almost adventurous to eat. The presentation is well done and the ingredients seem to be of decent quality. All in all, Vegetiger sends mixed messages, but I perceived them as all good.
Pros: original mix up of styles, good taste, fascinating atmosphere
Cons: plates are a bit on the small side, well away from the city centre

Perfect place to eat for an evening in Nagoya - Edit
Delicious variety of Asian comfort food. The Tiger plate curry was excellent, as was the fried tofu. Definitely worth a visit. Appears to sell out of items in advance of closing, so arrive early if possible.

What makes this place unique is their commitment to avoiding processed vegan meats, which are common at other restaurants. Instead, they focus on high-quality, natural ingredients. Their deep-fried tofu, served with delicious basmati rice and fresh vegetables, is a must-try.
Be sure to arrive early, as they stop serving food at 3 PM. The cafe also has a great music selection playing throughout, adding to the cozy vibe. They’re often busy with both in-store customers and Uber Eats orders, so expect a lively atmosphere.
Definitely worth the trip—I’ll be going back for sure!

豆腐のフライドチキンは、本物のお肉と変わらないくらい食べ応えもあってご飯が進みます☺️
オープン当初からあるタイガープレート、いつ食べても変わらずずっと美味しいから大好きです！辛さも調節できるのもありがたい。
新しいメニューもいっぱい出て来るので、またすぐに行きたくなるお店です！

We had the best time! It’s run by a husband and wife, and the food was SO good. Even simple things like the side salad were so tasty. We got the tofu chicken, the kebab sandwich, and the thali plate, and it was all fantastic.

Amazing food and super nice owners - Edit
We just had the most amazing dinner at VEGETIGER. We ended up talking to one of the owners for a long time and got to see their cats. The food was delicious and my wife who otherwise isn't a fan of curries really liked the curry. I can also truly reccomend the desserts. They both hit the spot for both of us.

From the street this place doesn’t look like it has much going for it but once you sit down and are greeted by the lovely staff (who spoke very good English if you are a Gaijin such as myself) you understand the real vibe of this place.

Best vegan dinner in Nagoya - Edit
Nagoya have really not enough vegan restaurant open in evening. This one is open till 10pm. And the food is delicious. The owners are adorable. Owned by a Japonese/Australian couple if I am not wrong. They have 10 seats only so if you are a large group it could be not possible. Try the chocolate cake, gluten free and delicious.

I had the bbq jackfruit sandwich and soup set as well as the matcha ice cream - all was very good. The staff were also very friendly. It’s a smaller shop with one large table and a smaller one indoors, some counter seats and some outdoor seating.

We loved our dinner here. We are 1 vegetarian, 1 sometimes vegetarian with some food allergies and 2 non-vegetarians and everyone ate and ate and ate and loved every bite. We tried so many things on the menu and they were all declared winners. It was a great experience and a welcome break from struggling to find somewhere we all could eat together in Nagoya. We wish they were franchised and in other cities! Thank you, Toraya Vegetiger!

We arrived right before closing time, but the staff were absolute sweethearts and still took us in! I had the signature tiger plate, and husband had the Thai chicken, both were amazing and tasty dishes crafted with skill and care 💚 I cannot recommend this place enough!

They make everything in house! The vegan meats, all the sauces (mayonnaise made of chickpea etc.). A small seemingly family run business and they have sparkling sake! The Thai curry plate is definitely special, and the wafu chicken is wild.

We stopped at Vegetiger before catching a train, so we let them know we were in a bit of a hurry and asked them if they could recommend something quick to prepare and to eat, and they were super understanding and available. After a few minutes, we realized that we just had to leave and run, and we asked them if they could make our order to take away, and in a couple minutes they handed us our very tightly packed meals that endured a run under the rain without spilling. The food was delicious! We ordered a teriyaki jackfruit sandwich with lentil soup, salad and fries on the side, all very tasty and also practical to eat even on a train. Finally, the place was very cozy, even though we couldn’t enjoy it to the fullest. Thanks again and sorry for the rush!

The food was spectacular, the taste is so good even when the entire menu is vegan. The owner is very friendly and welcoming, he speaks english and japanese fluently. If you are in Nagoya, you have to eat from this place at least once.

Ate here this evening after all the positive reviews. They have an extensive menu which has includes both rice dishes and sandwiches. They create everything by hand and have an emphasis on not using soy meat and processed plant meats.

The owner is so friendly and we had a lovely conversation with him as a fellow aussie. Highly recommend if you are near or far from the restaurant, the vibes are immaculate. It's a shame we are only in Nagoya for a couple of nights as we would love to come back if we got the chance!

Seriously, do yourself a favour, and try Vegetiger - you won’t be disappointed. We’ve been to so many vegan restaurants in many countries, and this is absolutely one of our TOP 5! The food is divine, and owners make it even better. They’re only a new restaurant and they’re a bit of a walk from the nearby subway, but it’s worth the investment in time. What they’ve done with some of the food (like their own deep fried soy and Thai curry) is next level and what you’d expect from high end restaurants. You’ll be surprised to find (like we were) that it’s just a wife and husband who’ve taken the plunge and created a 100% vegan restaurant and developed their own dishes and flavours. This place is amazing - we only found it on our last night in Nagoya, and have already changed our plans to eat here again tomorrow before we leave (that’s how good it is).
