Authentic Pure Vegetarian South Indian in the Mission - Edit
I was already a fan of Udupi Palace having gone to their Berkeley location before so was looking forward to some 100 percent Vegetarian South Indian Cuisine in the Mission recently.
Read moreThe menu is nearly all vegan by default w/ the exception of dairy found in paneer or curd dishes which is easily avoided if you are a vegan.
I enjoyed a thali made vegan by request at their location in Berkeley yet today was feeling dosa so opted to get the Udupi combo which features idly, medhu vada, & a choice of one of five dosa.
I opted to go w/ the classic Mysore Masala Dosa which features a rice & lentil crepe smeared w/ spicy chutney & stuffed w/ spiced potatoes.
The combo came w/ 3 delicious chutney & sambhar. I found the combo to be authentic, hearty, & delicious. I have spent many moons abroad in India & have long been a fan of South Indian food.
If you aren't familiar with South India food I highly recommend it & it is a great introduction to the cuisine here.
I think it was a good sign to see several Indian customers here enjoying their lunch as well. I look forward to returning soon!

Very Vegan friendly! - Edit
This is a vegetarian restaurant that serves food local to Karnataka and Tamilnadu. I love their Dosas and idlis. This time, I tried their Uthapams and found it to be a bit bland. They had vegan mango lassi which I thoroughly enjoyed (to my surprise!)
Read more4 stars as the food could have been a lot better and the service was very slow. (The place wasn’t even packed at the time)
Would definitely come back here for my South Indian food cravings

It took us 20 minutes to decide what to order because we were so overwhelmed by all the yummy options! We ended up barely eating dinner because we were so full from our lunch there. Delicious!

Fabulous Food - Edit
We required a meal with no gluten or dairy and this place hit the spot. Savory and interesting flavors and topped off by absolutely perfect vegan mango lassi.
Read morePortions were generous, so we get to enjoy leftovers for lunch.
Do not miss the vada! These are VG, GF savory doughnuts that were the perfect combination of light and crispy. Reminiscent of hush puppies in the best way.
At a follow-up visit, the vada were delivered already in the soup, so not separate. I hope to try and order them separately.

Everything was so good. We ordered the vegan thali, spinach masala dosa, and aloo matter (vegan upon request). They also brought us a dish we didn’t order on accident—I think it was a samosa chat—and what a delicious accident that was.

Everything was great here - Edit
Clearly marked menu with many vegan options. The food, service, and ambiance was wonderful. This is a great place for an inexpensive, quality bite. We came hungry and the balanced flavors, very rich taste, authentic sambhar and crisp dosa and bhatura. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

Creamy vegan curry! - Edit
The thing I most appreciate about this place is that they have creamy vegan curry dish(es). I think I've gotten the same one each time. It came with this really tasty bread with a lovely texture. It wasn't naan like I'm used to. The creamy sauce base was described as a "gravy" which threw me off a little but it tastes good and pairs well with the rice😄I've eaten here several times😄Also so far only nuetral to positive experiences with staff :)

Service was lightning fast and the menu was very clear about what was vegan (a little more than half) and what could be made vegan if you asked. Service was friendly and polite. Prices were very cheap for how much food it was!

This place has the best dosas in San Francisco! If it weren't so loud I would go here much more. I find that it is possible to converse at times other than dinner time, so that is when I go. The Puri is also really wonderful here.

ok dosas - Edit
South Indian restaurants, esp ones that serve authentic dosas are hard to come by. As an Indian, I found these to be quite expensive (a dosa should never cost more than $7 max), very greasy, and full of way too much masala stuffing. I live in the neighborhood and I never go. If you are in need of a dosa fix, then it will work but for me not worth the money.

We didn't eat there in the end because it's hard to identify the vegan items on the menu - Edit
I just want to say that we didn't eat there because it's hard to identify the vegan items on the menu.
Read moreThey say all non vegan items are marked with a star (*). At first glance I was happy because below 5% of the items on the menu were marked.
However while looking more carefully I noticed there were a lot of dishes containing ghee butter, paneer cheese or cream NOT marked as non vegan, missing the non vegan star (*).
Also both deserts are non vegan and not marked as such.
So, I asked our server about this and it seemed he was very knowledgeable about what vegan means and possibly also about vegan and non vegan items. He was very friendly and told us he will let the owner know about the confusing menu.
But because of this I just didn't trust the place so we didn't eat there in the end.
I will give it 2 stars because of the confusing menu.
Pros: friendly server
Cons: hard to say which item is vegan and which not

my favorite place for vegan gf Indian - Edit
Lovely menu with wonderful happy people working here. The sambar is delicious. The fried idli is too. They have tons of gluten free options too, just avoid the semolina flour items. Everything else is rice and lentil flour. Please tell them you are vegan and they will not use ghee. The staff is very knowledgable. Items that are NOT vegan are marked on the menu. It seems like they are always open - even Christmas and thanksgiving day. They deliver through grub hub. I love this place.

Very authentic south Indian - Edit
Udupi Palace seems like one of the most authentic Indian restaurants in SF. You're served on metal trays, and the dosas are huge, thin, and legit. It's pretty small inside and has something of the kind of atmosphere you find in restaurants in south asia. I certainly wouldn't use the word tranquil to describe it, but I've never found it too loud to enjoy a meal.

Well-Spiced Indian Cuisine - Edit
I had read about this place on happycow and decided to eat here on a recent trip to San Francisco. Here's my Udupi Palace review.
Read moreIt's located on a busy area of Valencia alongside other restaurants. The interior is causal, simple, with dark cherry furniture and some Indian decor. The menu offered a variety of dishes, from which I picked samosas and a vegetable biryani.
The samosas were okay--spicy but not too salty. The vegetable biryani is an aromatic basmati rice pilaf, and it was rather spicy but well-spiced; i really enjoyed the spices and the flavor.
I saw an Indian family eating there, so that must be a good sign that its authenticity pleases also Indians. Non-Indian guests were also present.
Pros: all veg, good use of spices, friendly
Cons: can be very spicy

Excellent South Indian food! - Edit
Came here for dinner last night, food was soooo delicious! (OK, maybe we were just too starving.) But seriously, the uttapam was the best one I've ever had. The ingredients just tasted so fresh. The paratha was very good too. Lucky we came here early, the place started to get busy and a little noisy while we were eating. I very rarely go to a restaurant twice when traveling, but I think I might have to make an exception for this one!
