Good rolls, bad setting - Edit
I'm super appreciative of any vegan restaurants in the Bay Area. It's a myth that this area has a lot of veg places. There are actually very few, so I cherish the ones we have. I first went to the Honolulu location and liked it a lot. The Berkeley location smells weird. It's a small, LOUD restaurant where diners are so close together that you hear everyone's convos and smell their perfume. There is a roll they light on fire that smells like butane all through the small restaurant. So that's a bummer. The food is good. The seating is uncomfortable and it's just too loud to be fun or relaxing. It's hard to get the servers attention. The starters often come after the rolls, even when we asked for apps to come first. The view outside is of garbage cans lined up and trash. So... Could be a lot nicer of a place.
Read morePros: All vegan, Rolls are pretty
Cons: Restaurant smells mildewy, LOUD, too close seating, View of garbage, hard to park

Great and unique - Edit
We had a wonderful dinner here. The food was varied and inventive. We had a variety of dishes. The rolls were more interesting than the shared plates, but all were good. We especially liked the Ewa and Pacifica specialty rolls. The desserts were fabulous - Yuzu Cheesecake, Mixed Berry Cheesecake and Pistachio Ice Cream. Gluten containing dishes were clearly marked.

I shared three specialty rolls with a friend. Each roll was beautifully presented and tasted so good. Can't wait to come back, but might make a reservation well in advance next time because the seats go quick!

Amazing New Year’s Eve - Edit
Just believe this review that it was AMAZING! Craft ramen, many different rolls, and kind and quick service. They also serve alcohol. This made for a special night! If you live near here I’d be doing takeout every week. Thanks to the Shizen team for their expansion 😃 #Veganuary

Quality at somewhat reasonable prices - Edit
If you're between spending $8 for an impossible whopper or a classic roll at this place then this place all day.
Read moreTane (and Shizen) offer high quality ingredients, plating, and taste to all of their decisions, specifically the eggplant nigiri. The eggplant melts in your mouth and does not require any chewing but is full of flavor.
The speciality rolls are also of good value because they range from $16-17 & come with 8 pieces. The 1 menu item that was on the pricier side was the cheesecake which was priced at $15. Nevertheless the pricepoint is worth it because it has to be one of the bay area's best cheesecakes.
Never a bad experience at Tane.
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing (ok maybe parking)

Vegan Japanese, reasonable prices, fun spot (5/5 green stars) - Edit
I’m glad I took the time to write this review, or I wouldn’t have learned about Tane Vegan Izakaya. I learned that Izakaya is “a type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks,” similar to a tapas bar. I also learned that Tane in Berkeley is a sister branch to the original Tane in Honolulu! Also, Tane, means "seed" in Japanese and it embodies the restaurant’s “commitment to sustainable and innovative dining.” The same people are behind Shizen, the popular vegan Japanese restaurant in San Francisco. The founders’ goal is to protect the oceans by showcasing tasty Japanese dishes that are made without fish. I think they have succeeded in delivering a diverse menu of satisfying and interesting dishes.
Read moreI’ve been there twice now and look forward to going back for a third visit. The second visit was marred a little bit by a loudmouth bore at the next table, but I can hardly hold Tane accountable for that...😄Just bear in mind that it can get a little noisy at night, when it’s busy. Staff members were friendly and efficient both times and the food seems to be quite consistent. The simple grilled mushrooms dish ($12) is a good example of the restaurant’s aesthetic – good ingredients, cooked quite simply so that their inherent qualities are not lost.
I’m also giving Tane Vegan Izakaya 5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact.
• Tane is a completely vegan restaurant. Adopting a plant-based diet is the top thing you can do to mitigate climate change, deforestation, animal cruelty, and food scarcity.
• Tane strives to support suppliers that use eco-friendly practices (e.g., pesticide-free) and to minimize their carbon footprint “by reducing waste and sourcing seasonal ingredients directly from local farmers.”
• The website for the original Honolulu branch of Tane lists some of the produce suppliers, but the Berkeley branch hasn’t done this (yet).
Please join in and include a Green Stars rating with your own reviews!
Pros: Fully vegan, Fresh ingredients, prepared simply, Friendly staff
Cons: Can be noisy at night

Delicious sushi & ramen - Edit
As a vegan lover of ramen, theirs was delicious. It came with this smoky meat sort of tofu thing that I wasn't the biggest fan of but the broth and ramen itself were delicious, the broth had this incredible flavor and the ramen was springy and chewy. The California roll was also delicious, the rice was really high quality and tasted great as well.

THE BEST VEGAN SUSHI - Edit
I have brought multiple omnivores here and everyone agrees that Tane (a.k.a. Shizen in SF) is 10/10. My FAVORITES are Pacifica and Sunset. The Sweet Potato roll is delicious too at a lower price.
Read moreI do wish they had some rotating specials though. As far as I know, the menu has been the same for 5 years (referring also to Shizen, which has been open longer and has the same dishes by different names)
