Great place, tasty food - Edit
We had a terrific meal here tonight. Malaysian vegan menu. Food was absolutely delicious. Fairly extensive menu with a daily specials board as well. Inside and outside seating, food arrives quickly. Very friendly staff. Tap water given as soon as we arrived and topped up throughout our meal without asking. Choice of beers a little limited, it would have been nice to have the choice of Asian beers.
Read morePlease note: Separate gf menu, however we had emailed in advance (as one of our party is a coeliac) to double check re cross-contamination etc which they didn’t respond to, so our coeliac family member did not feel able to eat there.

Disappointing main - Edit
The vibe of the place is excellent, but the tables are too close. It felt quite cramped at least in the part of the restaurant where we were seated.
Read moreWe ordered two dishes. Katsu curry with oyster mushroom (which was EXCELLENT and would deserve a 5/5 review) and the "Special deep-fried tofu" which came with a mushroom sauce. Here's where the problems start. They say it is a main dish, but the amount they serve is extremely small. Mains should be almost a full meal for most people, if not something that you could order by itself and call it a day. I do not eat extreme amounts and this dish was too little. It could be a good side to share, definitely not a main. I think they know about it and that is why they insist on you buying side rice. But shouldn't that be part of the meal if it is a requirement? The side of rice you must pay, which adds 5£ to the bill and makes the dish overall 20£. I think this is too much money for something that was not particularly impressive taste-wise either. It was okay, but the mushroom sauce did not taste or much at all, and the tofu was well coated and fried but also had nothing special too it.
I left quite disappointed and honestly felt like it was a bit dishonest.

Das Essen war sehr lecker. Leider waren wir gegen Ende der Küchenzeit dort und wurden freundlich auf den zeitlichen Druck hingewiesen. War in Ordnung. Die Portion hätte etwas größer sein können.

Delicious - Edit
All vegan Asian restaurant with great options. The creamiest green curry I've ever had, with soft fluffy tofu and veg. Also had the salt and pepper lotus root and sweetcorn fritters. Everything was delicious and the portions are generous. It's not the cheapest (but you are in Edinburgh so to be expected) nor is it very big inside, so either book ahead or be prepared to wait. Fast and efficient service.

Very delicious food - Edit
The restaurant is very well limited for which reason I was only able to go there with a strict time slot at an off-peak time. The recommended dishes were both very delicious. The team was very friendly and attentive.

Incredible food - Edit
I can see why this place has mostly 5 stars! It was delicious. It was so busy inside when we stopped by, every table was full, which is always a good sign. So many incredible dishes to choose from. We got the romantic sampler and a traditional Malaysian dish with coconut rice as well as tom yum soup. It was really hard to choose bc everything looked amazing but I think you probably cannot go wrong here. Service was lovely. The person I assume to have been the owner was especially warm and friendly. I would not hesitate to come here when in the area!! I would eat here all the time if I could!😄

Best vegan restaurant - Edit
Amazing vegan food and friendly staff! I had one appetizer and one of the soups as my main and both were phenomenal. I would go back all the time if I lived in Edinburgh. Don’t miss out on this place!

Delicious but very expensive - Edit
I had the deep fried tofu with stir fried rice. Everything was delicious, if a little salty for my personal taste (but I have a very low salt tolerance so I doubt that would be the case for most people). Friendly staff keeping your water glass full thé whole time, and very speedy cooking. My one complaint is that the mains don’t come with a carb, so what is already quite expensive requires you to get a side too. For me, I’d prefer the price to be a tiny bit higher but come with rice or noodles or something, as paying £4-5 on top of a £14 main comes to a lot.

Great food, terrible reservation system - Edit
The food was incredible but unfortunately you have to give your credit card information to make a reservation and the amount will be reserved for a week. We didn't want to do that so we went there without a reservation. We were asked to sit next to the door, even though the restaurant was almost empty and remained that way for the entire time we were there. People kept opening and not properly closing the door and it was freezing cold. The people were very nice but pretty overbearing. Someone stopped by our table every few minutes to ask how everything was and if we needed anything. While I appreciate the sentiment, it was impossible to have a conversation or even just eat without constantly being interrupted.

Fully vegan comfort food with rich flavours - Edit
We went here spontaneously and were lucky to get a table for two as it was very packed and most tables were booked.
Read moreDespite that, staff were very friendly. The food was served quickly and the portion sizes were very good.
We had the sweet corn fritters and satay tofu as starters and the wantan noodles and mapo tofu as mains. All of it was delicious, flavourful and well-made. I would have loved to try some dessert too, but we just couldn't eat any more :D
Pros: Very quick, Friendly staff, Great flavours
Cons: A bit packed, tables close to one another

Fresh and savoury food. I got the mapo tofu with boiled rice. The tofu was silky and the sauce slightly spicy. The vegetables were crispy. They have gluten free options and desserts. The price is correct.

The ambience is so special, something between high class restaurant and botanical garden and jazz bar. My laksa was on point, spicy and hot, so I could enjoy it mindfully 😊

Great to have a new Malay and Singaporean inspired restaurant in Edinburgh.

Soul Searching 🤔 - Edit
A much anticipated visit to Soul Vegan, turned out to very underwhelming and left us bitterly disappointed.
Read moreCan't fault the house red wine, katsu curry with king oyster mushroom and the sweetcorn fritters, which were delicious, but the salt and pepper lotus roots were lacking seasoning and the Rendang lion's mane mushroom was so dry and inedible. I'm still baffled by that rendang a week later after visiting 🤔.
Our visit was also not helped by having to stand outside for a good 5-10 minutes with our 6 year old son in the freezing cold Edinburgh weather, whilst they prepared our table.
Would I return again? Possibly? Was it an off day? Maybe? One thing is for certain, don't order the Rendang!
