Heavenly food in The Heavenly City - Edit
Wow! Wow! Wow! (If I could, I would give it 10 Happy Cows)
Read moreAs a kid growing up in NY, my favorite meals were always in Chinatown. For years I prayed that an authentic vegan Asian restaurant would Open up in Israel. Seoul house is a 100% real deal, authentic Korean restaurant, and it's not just in Israel, but it's in Jerusalem!! and in the old city!!! and kosher!!! and (while it's not Vegan) it's even Pescatarian with a vegan alternative for almost everything!
We were skeptical to try the TteokBboki, as it looks like cheese doodles or Bamba, but the staff highly recommended it as we were glad they did. While I've never had Tteok ("Chewy rice flour"?) before, it was incredible. The texture is like no other, chewy and delectable and the sauces are perfect. If you like spicy then I recommend getting the spicy, but otherwise the Sweet Silan one is magnificanet covered in a sweet Korean sauce with caramelized onion and Mushrooms. The Tteok is a must order!
We also tried the Tofu Joram which was pleasant, with subtle flavors and nicely cooked vegetables, but not overly impressive.
We were also given complimentary Kimbap (Korean Sushi) which was delicious and very fresh tasting, as well as a sample of Bibimbap (kind of a Korean "Buddha Bowl", both were quite good.
Everything we had ranged from good to spectacular.
Not to be outdone is the atmosphere. The owner, Ziporah, brought in carpenters from Korea to give you the feeling that you are sitting in South Korea, even down to a table where you sit on heated mats. Considering it is in an old Jerusalem stone structure, the inside didn't need interior designing, but this clearly isn't just a restaurant, it's a labor of love.
For the same reason, the service is amazing. Ziporah comes out and greets customers, the the wait staff is very friendly and helpful, and they even have a mock plastic version of their menu so the uninitiated can see what they are ordering.
The only negative with this place is that it's quite small and can probably only fit 20 people, so I recommend reserving a table in advance, because once the secret is out, this place should have lines out the door.
Most Tel Avivians are proud that Tel Aviv is the international food mecca of Israel, and until now, I would have agreed, but Seoul House is better and more authentic than almost anything Tel Aviv has to offer.
For years I dreamed of a place like this, and thanks to Seoul House, this dream has come true!
